The federal government appears to have surrendered to the devastating effects of the floods ravaging many parts of the country with the president, Goodluck Jonathan expressing its inability to effectively contain the disaster.
He said the level of destruction caused by flood across the country was “very alarming” and beyond the capacity of the federal government.
The President expressed this sentiment yesterday while on a visit to victims of the flood disaster in Lau, Taraba State.
According to Jonathan, the Presidential Committee was set up to solicit for assistance from the international community, saying the European Union and the World Bank had indicated willingness to assist Nigeria.
The president also visited victims in Yola, Adamawa State where he promised the federal government’s intention to assist them in returning to their normal lives.
He went further to disclose the FG’s plan to make early maturing seedlings available to farmers to ensure that they harvested their crops early enough to avoid any kind of disaster.
He reportedly said relevant agencies have been directed to take measures that, would ensure that flood victims recover from the effects of the disaster.
“On behalf of the government of Nigeria, I assure you that we will do our best. Relevant agencies including the Army Medical Personnel have been mobilized to take care of flood victims,” he said.
