Tekno enlists Mafikizolo for the remix of ‘Enjoy’

$

Off his debut album Old Romance released last year, singer and hitmaker Tekno pushed out Enjoy as one of the album’s pilot singles. The song is blissfully Tekno-esque, harking back to the singer’s prolific era with its zesty, polyrhythmic beats and catchy melodies. The visuals finds Tekno taking control of a supermarket while keeping security locked out, illustrating the song’s message of enjoying one’s self.

For the just-released remix, South Africa’s enduring music duo Mafikizolo is enlisted, pushing the song towards a cross-border appeal. Several shifts can be seen, from Mafikizolo’s flavourful tribal verses to the dizzying burst of colour in the video that takes in more scenery. Tasteful fashion in the form of sequined masks, tiered tulle, accessories and whatnot. It’s the remix we deserve. Watch the video below.

Peer pressure is a major contributor to Nigeria’s mental health crisis

$

The notion of peer pressure being bad for business is not new to anyone raised by Nigerian parents. In every ethnic language in Nigeria there is a phrase to admonish against ‘bad friends’ or ‘bad influence.’ Yet, the irony remains that often parents do this under the influence of pressure rather than pure altruistic concern. And in that is sometimes the lesson they try and fail to teach us with their admonishment.

There are positive effects that peer pressure could have on a person. Like make you push your child to excel so she can stand shoulder to shoulder with her peer among your friends’ children, for instance. Or make you work extra hard to afford a better place in another neighborhood because it is better for your kids in the long run even if you don’t know it yet.

Nigerian parents are however not wrong about one thing – that peer pressure packs more negative effects for younger people than positive effects, even if their methods are not altogether ideal.

That is not to say that the effect of peer pressure on adults is any less concerning. The far-reaching negative impact of peer pressure on the mental and physical wellbeing of a person don’t go away with age, what often happens is that the adult is better prepared with coping tools to navigate it than teenagers are. Sadly, most times that isn’t the case.

Ezeani Chinaza, a Nigerian entertainer whose Instagram skit went viral in 2019 and her success steadily grew with it, vocalized in a series of Instagram posts the frustration of positive peer pressure many Nigerian adults don’t have the language to even describe.

Chinaza, whose over 100, 000 Instagram following is largely there for her skits, had lately been pressuring her to put out more of the content that they signed up for.

It is a story of positive peer pressure millions of Nigerian adults know personally but one that few stop to pull apart to see how harmful it is to their mental wellbeing.

Whether it is, “Get that masters,” “Get married now, the sooner the better,” or “Get that second child now, your first child will thank you for it,”  we have all heard some iteration of ‘advice’ from our friends that leaves us rolling in bed assessing our life choices for nicks that confirm their concerns.

34 year old Kano-based finance professional, Suleiman Faisal, put it most relatably when he said, “I would not be doing what I do right now if not for the fear of being unable to keep up with my friends.”

Chinaza’s post laid out the reasons for her inability to keep up with her followers whose threats of unfollowing her page is dangled every time in her comments section ; a whip to drive the horse on its course that does more harm than good to her creativity per her post.

Some of the negative effects of peer pressure include drug abuse, alcohol consumption, depression, anxiety, insomnia, eating disorders et cetera.

Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses globally and a very common trigger remains the very human comparison with peers that leaves people feeling like under-achieving posers.

Chinaza is not alone in this struggle.

Ife* (24, F) feels the same emotional weight when self-comparison corners her.

“It is basically the same feeling we had instilled in us by our parents growing up – the feeling that you are not enough unless you can keep up with your peers. The only difference is that it is now enforced by the very same peers our parents once dangled in front of our eyes to remind us of what we are failing to achieve.

“I have kept my distance from people a lot lately because I don’t want to grapple with the feeling of underachievemet I feel when I am around them most times.”

Ife’s solution to self-comparison may seem practical because at the end of the day there is hardly anything you can control beyond how you come to any situation, whether that is career trajectory or sexual attraction. It is however not advisable because loneliness can increase the amount of cortisol (known as the stress hormone) in your body. This can affect your immune system and raise your risk for a range of health concerns, including, diabetes, sleep issues, cancer, heart problems and obesity.

Prolonged loneliness can affect mental health also. It can make any symptoms you’re already dealing with worse, for one. It can also factor into the development of serious mental health conditions, including depression.

Rasheeda (36, F) knows this from personal experience.

“My go-to solution in University was to self-isolate when I feel despondency coming on. I used to miss classes just so I can stay away from forced interactions with friends and coursemates. You can imagine how that ended.

“Coming across my triggers became increasingly easier. Access to people I can unload to became harder. The slide into clinical depression was very easy from there.”

Finding a healthy balance with peer pressure is hard. In fact, many swear it is impossible because the human propensity to look around and compare the present with what could be is not easy to do away with.

Chima (31, M) believes it is impossible to arrive at a balance with peer pressure.

“It is either work to catch up or simply remove yourself from the competition. You can’t win by failing or an uncaring attitude. I tried and failed once.

“I think it is harder for men because in any setting we are expected to suck it up. The best you can do, from my experience, is to flow with the situation. That means you are never in control of your reaction to the situations.”

That however is exactly the problem; people being unable to control their reactions to a situation and being forced to conform to a social expectation of how they should react.

Bibi (24, F) embodies this and swears by it. Chinaza agrees in her post when she wrote;

“I will eventually post the content that appeals to you but please, don’t pressure me,” she said in response to her followers’ requests for content.

Bibi’s way may be easier because she doesn’t have a throng of fans waiting for her to deliver for them.

Yet, celebrity or not, we have an innate desire to protect the self. For Chinaza, that may mean deciding when to create and share, for someone like you and I, it may mean simply knowing when to engage altogether. Knowing the difference is vital.

Straffitti on being a rapper, exploring genres and pursuing other creative paths

$

Nigeria’s trap scene is bewitching enough to amass its own loyal fans, its muted glamour seen in the pockets of social media interactions, distressed, minimalist fashion and insular parties. When trap does explode into the mainstream and surely it will, 23-year-old Straffitti would be one of its correspondents, emerging not just to maintain the status quo but to disrupt it further. With a dollop of vocal engineering, Straffitti’s voice can mutate to embody the emotions he’s feeling.

It’s trap after all, hermetic enough to be a distinctive hip hop genre but still permeable that intermeshing with other genres is never an impossibility. Think Post Malone. Straffitti’s debut EP Vanilla Sky, released in 2017, wasn’t exactly a definitive trap offering but it had undeniable agility and swagger. Released under his indie imprint Thirsty Worldwide (more on this later), the EP scored a feature from Remy Baggins and also M.I. on Cozy Wave, with its digitally distorted interludes and trap-centric chants. Cherry Game Girl, on the project still, exhausts itself with programmed synths and a candy-coloured video, a tableau of fast-changing sequences and the use of animated motifs.

While his peers might feel inclined to churn out more short-form projects as they artistically mature, Straffiti went long-form with the arrival of his debut album Molotov in 2018. Consisting of 13 tracks, its lead single 100Benz featuring PsychoYP and Blaqbonez is also the album’s most popular entry, combining snares and hi-hats and booming kicks. It’s trap maximalism. Straffitti was happy to tease a snippet from the song.

‘My nigga copped benz scam cash / when you see us on that fresh, na nylon, ” Straff raps, ”Omo merin lori bed, we die here,”

100Benz speaks to trap’s cultural tilt towards hedonism and excess. Other tracks on the album are just as noteworthy: the sneering, seedy noir of El Fuego, the trap-emo-pop of Kar Keys, the narcotized plunge of O.D and the trap ballad of Demons Inside You. Molotov, at its core, is Straffiti reconfiguring the rules of trap and exceeding at it.

Born Olawale Olukolade, Straffiti comes from a family of four sisters. He’s the only male. He recalls his earliest memory of making music, ”Back in high school, recorded my first ever track myself at the back of my bed in my room on FL studio with the laptop mic. I decided to go into music cause I love art itself as a whole, which helps me express myself.”

His family individually gravitated towards music of various kinds, offering him a first glimpse of how music doesn’t have to be straitjacketed. ”Different things were being played by my uncles, they listen to rap, my aunt listened to R&B, my mum listened to reggae, my dad listened to Afro, so it was a diverse taste for me. From Wutang, to Lil wayne, to Bob Marley, to Ne-Yo, to Westlife, to Fela, to Madonna, e.t.c.”

His third project Straff from Nigeria was released in 2020, and finds Straffitti leaning unabashedly towards the hyper-commercialized sounds of Afrobeats/Afrofusion. Lepa is perhaps the most robustly resonant, but the closer Kuronbe featuring Zlatan, Ice Prince and PrettyBoyDo manifest as Afro-trap, a gradually skewing micro-genre that wrestles trap away for its western originators and brings it home. ”I explored a different genre,” reveals Straffitti ”Something artistes are scared to do these days, still willing to try more sounds am privilege to. I feel music for me should be genre boundless.”

Straffitti makes his own beat sometimes as a producer, recording and mixing but most times he’s usually co-producing with his producer friends on songs they have made. What’s remarkable about this is how artistes of his generation hold more than one creative title. They juggle being producers and audio engineers, and in Straffitti’s case – photography, graphic designer, video producer, image consultant and fashion designer. Some of these artistic paths feeds into the creative collective Thirsty Worldwide which he founded.

He explains, ”Thirsty Worldwide started 6 years ago, by making cool clothes & recording music from our bedrooms. The clothing line started taking off 2015, and came to a pause after 2 years, we decided to rebrand and branch out to throw our own shows and make more income to build the brand. Thereafter more creatives saw the light. All these were inspired by our “Thirst” which is the driving force instilled in us to keep breaking boundaries set by us in our mind. Our mind is the greatest tool there is.”

The Thirsty Worldwide look embraces simple wardrobe staples like graphic tees, chunky sneakers, sweatshirts, bandanas and hoodies. More interesting attempts can be found in the hand-ripped, distressed denim embossed with logos and badges, denim crafted into handbags and hats, and this cocooning bandage-y wear. Undeniably, Straffitti is the brand’s most visible emissary, combining streetwear coolness and denimcore to forge his own subcultural vocabulary.

Designing is also where Straffitti’s stage name came from. He reminisces with a laugh, ”My friends started calling me that after they misspelt Graffitti for Straffitti on a design that I made.”

Straffitti is currently listening to artistes from 2000’s Akon, T-Pain, Sean Kingston and trap artistes in Miami, Los Angeles and elsewhere. Last month, he linked up with fellow trap rapper GCL3F for collaborative EP Endless, a 5-track project skirting around RnB but still trafficking in elements of trap and pop with songs like and Sxt Me and Taboo plumbs the depths of sex. ”That’s my bro, we had to explore something else, r&b has been untouched so we had to dive into the waters and explore. We would be creating more capsules like this in the nearest future.” Straffitti says.

The conversation about the themes that make up our flywheel on the nonbinary blog are constantly evolving. We collate a weekly list of interesting tweets we saw from Nigerians on faith & spirituality, gender, sexuality, mental and emotional health, and disability.

Enjoy, add to the conversation or simply expand your worldview.

  1. Shame remains one of the reasons people sometimes hesitate to seek help for mental illness, that is why this tweet is special to us!
  1. Gender-based violence often happens in family settings as much as it does in romantic partnerships.
  1. Emotional abuse can be insidious, victims can take a while to come to terms with what’s happening to them.

You may sometimes have to watch out for others and hope others watch out for you.

  1. Sometimes, as is Nigeria’s case, the rot is in the culture.

Normalised abuse from the home, to the church and mosque and everyday public spaces, has descended our perception of abuse.

  1. A very valid concern tabled as a conversation starter. You can chip in.

Spread kindness in the world.

#TheVoiceNigeria: As it gets intense; battle zone or danger zone?

$

The Voice Nigeria, right from its earliest stage is a difficult show to participate in.

Unlike other music talent shows, this one emphasises raw talent from the get go, and even before you are allowed to grace the stage, you must have proven how talented you are. So it goes without saying that as we progress through each phase, the competition is only going to get increasingly and intensely tougher.

For the contestants this week, having gotten the vote of confidence from the judges during the auditions, you would think that there would be some sort of relief, but that is not the case. As tough as the last phase of the show was, this one is tougher, and the upward trend of increasing difficulty promises to continue till the show ends.

In tonight’s episode, members of Yemi Alade’s team took the stage to show Nigerians what they’ve got. Expecting nothing but back-to-back sensational performances, this team did not disappoint. Each of the six contestants were brilliant, but unfortunately, only half of them could be sent to the next round.

While contestants like Kitay, and Vanilla stood out, and were sent to the ‘Battle zone,’ which automatically translates to moving to the next stage; the remaining four contestants were sent to the ‘Danger zone’ which meant that they stood the risk of going home.

Loven, Tosin, Tim Ayo and Ewaoluwa all stood the risk of going home, and at the end of the show, Yemi Alade, only had the power to save one of them. She eventually saved Tosin, and the journey for the remaining three on the show came to an end.

We can only expect more intense moments like this, as contestants who want to make a name for themselves via this show are going to deliver fire performances, the only metric to separate the winner from the rest of the pack is how bright their fire burn.

Kitay steals the show | Season 2 Roundup, #TheVoiceNigeria

The Voice Nigeria, Season 2, saw to its final phase of the audition round last week.

This week, the contestants get down to business, as only a slight margin of error or underperformance would separate the qualifiers from those that would be sent home.

This week, the show was essentially about Team Yemi Alade. Her protégés were the first set of contestants to be put on the hot seat, or in this case ‘hot stage.’ While everyone put up an awesome performance, Kitay, a contestant who already has the look of a superstar, dwarfed that of everyone else.

It is important to note that this phase of the show is no joke, as everyone who made it this far had already gotten the approval of judges who are difficult to impress. So, contestants are largely projected to be equally-talented. That was until tonight however, when Kitay stood out amongst the cast of exceptional vocalists.

He owned his performance of Kizz Daniel’s Laye, and basically made the song his own, adding a highlife vibe to his rendition. This performance got the judges dancing, and at the end of it, even Darey who had said very little throughout the episode, heaped high praises on the young singer.

Across social media also, the only performance everyone seem to be talking about is Kitay’s performance, and he may have just put himself in a position to win it all. He certainly has our attention, and is an early favourite in our estimation.

#NigerianIdol: Kingdom wins the fans over; for a second time | Season 6 Roundup

Last week on the Nigerian Idol Season 6, eleven contestants advanced to the next round, as they were deemed by the judges to be the best undiscovered singers in the country.

With the selection being too close to call, it is clear that a thin margin separates these singers from each other.

On Sunday’s live show however, it was proven that, while these contestants appear equally talented, certain factors can separate those who have an awesome performance from those who don’t.

For starters, song selection is important, as some songs spotlight the voices of some, while a different song may expose the same person’s vocal flaws. Another factor is confidence and conviction, as those who want to win badly tend to perform better than those who may be a bit nervous and reluctant. And for Kingdom, all the deciding factors seemed to have worked in his favour on Sunday.

In line with the episode’s theme; ‘The classics,’ Kingdom performed the Lion Sleeps Tonight by Lebo M., from the movie Lion King. He stole the heart of many viewers, vocalising the song beautifully, and pouring his heart out in his performance. He got a standing ovation from all three judges, and has been the number one trend of the show on social media.

Seeing as his continuous stay is in the hands of the fans, it is great to see that the fans are showing Kingdom his deserved love, and are pushing to make him stay based on his performance alone. While contestants like Comfort and 16-year-old Beyoncé, are also fan favourites, Kingdom is winning the fans over with sheer talent, and if continues to wow the audience, he is likely to be this season’s winner.

#NigerianIdol: Talent hunt show or another popularity contest? | Season 6 Roundup

Nigerian Idol Season 6, has so far been nothing short of entertaining.

From the audition stage, to the the theatre week, every inch of the show has been amazing to watch. As we get into the elimination rounds however, though the show still promises great entertainment, the final result may turn out a little contentious.

It is arguable that this stage is more interesting than previous phases, but a controversial result is likely because of the show’s new format which puts the power to save or to eliminate a contestant in the hands of viewers.

The remaining eleven contestants gave wonderful performances Sunday, some of which received higher praises from the judges than others. Nonetheless, the fans have the power to say who stays and who goes.

No doubt, a little drama and a little controversy makes good for television viewership, but putting a talent show in the hands of the masses may or may not yield the deserved result. For a show of this kind, fans tend to stan a character, and regardless of whatever happens, they stay loyal to said contestant. Such loyalty could end up being detrimental to a contestant who by all metrics deserves the win, but just doesn’t have the popularity a rival might have.

We all love that some autonomy is given to the general public, but in a situation like this, it’s difficult to be trusted. From national political campaigns to Student Union elections, as well as voting for the leader of a Church group, Nigerians when given the power to vote, tend to lean towards they like than those who deserve the position.

The concept of a popularity contest is deeply weaved into the fabric of our behaviour as a people, and it is unclear if it will rear its ugly head in this show. To put things into context, Comfort who is a sweetheart amongst fans didn’t really perform her best last night, but it is unlikely that she is in any real danger.

To be fair however, Kingdom had the best performance hands down on Sunday and fans seem to be gravitating towards him on social media.

So, only time will tell, will this be another popularity contest or will the audience be responsible with their votes?

Major go-to markets in Plateau State

Experiential marketing, rather than using more traditional media, leaves a lasting impression and builds stronger relationships with consumers all over the world. It focuses on assisting consumers in experiencing a brand by immersing them in the product in a way they have never experienced before. As a result, many brands have begun to incorporate exhibitions and other similar events into their campaigns, even going so far as to choose market places as the location for some of their demonstrations.

Here are some of the top markets in Plateau perfect for your brand’s next marketing exhibition:

  1. Abattoir Market: Abattoir Market is easily considered the best source of meat in the Plateau State Capital Region, with big wholesale for pretty much any modern quantity of meat, as well as comprehensive acquisition and butchering services. This location also has a full-service food market with everything you need for a modern African meal, from root to flour, nut to fruit.
  1. Terminus, Jos Main Market: The Jos Main Market, also known as the Jos Terminal Market, was a state-of-the-art market in Jos, Nigeria’s capital. It was regarded as West Africa’s largest indoor market. It was established by Joseph Gomwalk, the first Military Governor of the old Benue-Plateau State, and served as a hub for the selling of a variety of goods, including cosmetics and clothes.
  1. Bukuru Market: On Saturdays, the market is particularly crowded. It’s known for its low-cost vegetables, Irish potatoes, and second-hand clothes and shoes, which the locals refer to as “gwanjo.” All is within walking distance, from building materials to grains and foodstuffs, as well as local soup ingredients, processed foods, and meat. It’s crowded, and finding a parking spot is difficult, but the roads are in good shape, and the market is easily accessible.
  1. Tuduwadan Market: In this market, a variety of commodities are on display for exchange; They include everything from agricultural products to specialized items.  This is a market where you can buy and sell things like food, clothing materials, and cosmetics at a lower price.
  1. Rukuba Market: A market on the side of the road with women as the main sellers. One can get medicine and other household items such as soap, food, provisions, and other household items here. Carrots, green peas, peppers, onions, and okra are all readily available. Fruit is also sold at the auction. Also available are roasted corn, fried yam, fried potatoes, and chicken.
  1. Katako Market: It is well-known for providing high-quality secondhand clothes. The majority of this apparel is probably first-grade, which has not been sold in its country of origin and has been imported here to be sold at a lower price. Grains of all kinds are available at reasonable rates. Clothing and shoes, as well as plastics and other household products, are on hand.
  1. Yan Doya Market: It’s a market where yam tubers are sold, and there’s a bus stop nearby. Owing to heavy traffic and commotion, getting around is difficult.

Is religion standing in the way of how we combat coronavirus?

In unsurprising fashion, the General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel), David Oyedepo, recently told his congregation that no one can force them to take the coronavirus vaccine if they don’t want to. ”I’m telling you that no mortal man has the right to force you to take a vaccination.” the cleric said. He also stated that the reason Africa has a low coronavirus case count compared to other regions is because of the dominant presence of God.

As is already known, the coronavirus pandemic has ravaged the world for over a year now, countries putting in lockdown measures, promoting physical distancing and mask-wearing to curb the spread of the virus. In the midst of the bleakness, news about developing a vaccine offered hope: renowned pharmaceutical company Pfizer partnered with Biontech for this cause, and it was later revealed that the vaccine that was made was more than 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 infection.

More COVID-19 vaccines have sprung up like Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Pharmaceauticals), all approved by the FDA in America. And although the vaccines have come with some mild and short lasting side effects like fatigue and headaches, the vaccine still stands as a scientific breakthrough. This is not to say inoculations can’t give serious side effects as more clinical trials and research are done.

Vaccination programmes have also rolled out across Africa. With vaccine hysteria and uncertainties, 1.67million Nigerians have been fully vaccinated out of over 200 million. In truth, it’s a very small number. But the problem with Oyedepo’s utterances is that it prevents his followers from corroborating his statements elsewhere or seeking information from specialised professionals or experts. While vaccinations appear to come down ultimately to personal choice, for which he is right, religious figures often insert themselves in fields that they aren’t trained for and thus, misleading their congregation.

Africa’s low coronavirus cases, if we can still call it that, is due to the fact that Africa lacked the capacity to test for the virus. So, essentially, it had nothing to do with God. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome spreading falsehoods and conspiracies about coronavirus, specifically linking 5G technology to the virus. Not only that, but also about how the rollout of coronavirus vaccinations will be used to install a ”new world order’ led by the antichrist. This led to sanctions in the UK. Even beyond Nigeria, there have been pastors and evangelicals who denied or minimized the existence of coronavirus, only from them to ironically die from it.

At the core of this discourse is religion and science in conflict. Be that as it may, religious figures and authorities need to reckon with how they wield so much power, and how misinformation can lead to disastrous outcomes.

TECNO’s Cbeyond campaign has come to a triumphant end, with the smartphone brand coming through on its promise to give 6 lucky winners a 2-day mentorship with top celebrities, a brand new CAMON16, and a starter toolkit.

We all know that now more than ever, everyone needs every support they can get be it emotional, physical or otherwise. TECNO too understands this. And for years, they have ensured to support Nigerians in various ways through the activities that accompany the launch of their CAMON phones.

This year, the campaign is targeted at encouraging young Nigerians to pursue their passion by giving them a chance of being mentored by celebrities in different fields. These celebrities – Kaffy, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Olorunyomi Omoniyi Makun of Yomi Casual, Omoni Oboli, Kim Oprah, and DJ Kaywise – were experts in their fields. Nigerians were asked to post a picture or do a less than one minute video about what their passion is, what inspires them and why they will like to be mentored.

World-renowned photographer, Michael Christopher Brown was the judge of all the entries. There were numerous entries from all across the county, and after great work, Michael narrowed them down to 12, from which he selected the 6 lucky winners.

DJ Kaywise will be mentoring Ibaro Tochukwu, a rapper who is looking to begin to produce his own songs. Yomi Casuals will be mentoring Joy Chidera Ugwu, a fashion designer. Kaffy will be mentoring Obed Bawa, an upcoming dancer from Kaduna state. Omoni Oboli will be mentoring Ikenna Akwuruaha, an aspiring film maker. Kim Oprah will be mentoring Arike, a makeup artist and a gele stylist, while Kelechi Amadi-Obi will be mentoring Dotun Omiyale, a photographer.

One thing was common with all 6 winners; their stories were shared creatively, and their passion and desire to be the best in what they do shone through to Michael. It is no wonder their entries came tops amongst the myriads of entries TECNO received.

The winners will also be getting the fantastic Camon 16 and a starter toolkit.

It obviously was an interesting journey, and you can catch all the exciting moments on TECNO’s Instagram page.

Once again TECNO has reminded us that following your passion pays and we are here for it!

South African professional tennis player, Lloyd Harris, has fallen from the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) world top 50 list in a matter of days after he was ranked in the top 50 position.

The 24-year-old tennis player rode to the 50th position due to Rafael Nadal, losing his 2nd position to his opponent Daniil Medvedev. This loss has gone on to make it the first time that there’d be no American leading the top 30 list of tennis players.

The term ‘Kito’ diminishes the gravity of crimes committed against the LGBT+

At the beginning of the journey to go meet his year-long virtual friend, Ahmed, 24-year-old student, was apprehensive about the possible worst-case scenario that could happen by the end of it – he could be dead in a ditch somewhere with no one aware of the whereabouts of his mangled corpse. He had a name for this fear, a name his online exchanges with other LGBT+ people from around the country gifted him; Kito.

Kito is a person who pretends to be part of the LGBT+ community, they work to build trust with queer people and once it is built, plan to meet for a hookup or a date, but the date or hookup is just a ruse to lure the queer person to be extorted or worse murdered.

Tobi, 25-year-old developer based in Lagos, thinks kito also describes the situation.

“When i hear the word kito what immediately comes to mind is a kidnap situation that may end up in blackmail, extortion, physical assault or murder. A gay person could orchasterate this, as much as a homophobic straight person.”

Ahmed didn’t wind up dead even though his potential hookup ended in a kito situation. He was slapped around, his ATM cards maxed out and he was threatened with being outed, if he came after his violators. He didn’t.

Something is common across kito stories; the weaponisation of the taboo nature of homosexuality across Nigeria’s different cultures and religions. There is something else that is common, the criminals committing these atrocities are aware they are committing a crime but darn the consequence because they understand the currency of shame is often too difficult to exchange for justice in Nigeria.

The term, kito could remain relevant in community-speak as a tell-all word that conveys the message without further endangering queer people who simply want to talk about their daily struggle. As a word, it however does a woeful job of conveying the gravity of the range of crimes being committed under its umbrella.

Ahmed’s violator:

  1. Held him hostage – kidnap is punishable under Section 273 of the Penal Code with up to 10 years imprisonment and a possible fine. Punishment could vary up to a death sentence from state to state.
  1. Robbed him – robbery is punishable under both Section 402 of the Criminal Code and Section 298 of the Penal Code with up to 14 years and 10 years imprisonment respectively.
  1. Physically assaulted him – assault is a misdemeanour that attracts a punishment of, if no greater punishment is provided, imprisonment of one year.

Perhaps if we begin to identify every case of kito by its unique makeup; if we begin naming the crimes for what they are, criminal and intending criminals will begin to sit up and reconsider their criminal ways.

The irony of some of these grievous crimes attracting less punishment than the solemnisation of homosexual love – re-Same-sex Prohibition Act (2013), which attracts a 14-year prison sentence is not lost on us.
