NNPC increases fuel price to ₦998 in Lagos and ₦1,030 in Abuja

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | NNPC Increases Fuel Price to ₦998 in Lagos and ₦1,030 in Abuja

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has had Nigerians panic-buying fuel since its sudden announcement of an increase in fuel price, raising the price to ₦998/litre for those in Lagos and ₦1,030/litre for Abuja.

This increase in fuel price across all NNPC retail outlets is the second price increase within six weeks, as NNPC had previously raised its price to ₦898/litre.

Due to NNPC’s increase, Independent Petroleum Marketers have also raised the prices of their fuel to ₦1,200/litre. Since the announcement, Nigerians have all run to fuel stations nationwide to mass-buy petrol before the commodity prices are implemented.

NLC warns FG to reverse fuel price

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the federal government to return the price of petrol to its previous amount, claiming that it was irresponsible and illegal for a private firm to control and determine the cost of petrol.

The NNPCL had earlier raised the fuel price to ₦898/litre and was met with harsh criticism but to have increased the fee to ₦998/litre for Lagos and ₦1,030/litre for Abuja has only Nigerians to more sufferings and exploitations from petrol stations across the nation.

The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, wondered loudly why the NNPC has sought to hike the price of fuel almost every month when the minimum wage has yet to be implemented.

Report reveals Tinubu borrowed $6.45 billion from World Bank

A report has alleged that President Bola Tinubu has borrowed $6.45 billion from the World Bank within 16 months (a year and four months).

The total loan increased to $6.45 billion after the recent approval of the $1.57 billion loan from the World Bank for several projects in Nigeria.

The continuous approval of loans to Nigeria increases the country’s debt profile as the World Bank has now given out 36 loans to the federal government within five years, totalling Nigeria’s loan to $24 billion.

Tinubu’s initiative hopes to save the day with options to convert vehicles to CNG

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | NNPC Increases Fuel Price to ₦998 in Lagos and ₦1,030 in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative has taken the opportunity to inform Nigerians of an alternative to the use of petrol for their vehicles by introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which costs less than fuel prices in Nigeria.

According to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), CNG is much cheaper, safer and cleaner than fuel, now sold at ₦1,030/litre.

NiMet forecasts a three-day thunderstorms nationwide

Through the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the federal government has forecast a torrential pour of thunderstorms across Nigeria for the next three days.

From Thursday, 10 October, morning thunderstorms will begin in Nigeria’s Northern regions like Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, and Zamfara and gradually spread to other areas.

NiMet warned of a potential flood due to the thunderstorms in major cities and has asked residents of these areas to avoid such places.

Cooking gas price rises to ₦1,500/kg

Nigeria continues to become an unbearable country to live in as cooking gas prices have now risen to ₦1,500 per kilogram.

As Nigerians are dealing with the rise in petrol prices across the nation, they are now saddled with the burden of purchasing cooking gas at nearly the foreign exchange rate.

However, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIPCO Plc, Suresh Kumar affirmed that Dangote Refinery will come to save the day and reduce the price as over 60% of cooking gas in Nigeria is often being imported.

This development is due to the federal government approving the lifting of petrol from Dangote Refinery directly without needing the intervention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to promote healthy competition and reduction in the fuel prices sold nationwide.

Super Eagles stranded in Libya’s Airport

The Super Eagles scheduled to play the second leg of the AFCON 2025 Qualifier game were stranded in Libya.

The Nigerian male footballers took a flight for Libya on Sunday, October 13; however, an hour upon arrival at Benghazi, Libya, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reported that the Nigerian aircraft was directed to Al Abraq, a two-hour city drive away from Benghazi.

The players were forced to journey by road to Benghazi as Libyan authorities did not explain why transport was not provided for the Super Eagles team.

Libya had lost in a match against Nigeria in Uyo on Friday, October 11 and was scheduled to play again in Benina.

VeryDarkMan launches NGO, receives over ₦33 million in 24 hours

Nigerian controversial self-proclaimed activist Martins Vincent Otse, also known as ‘VeryDarkMan’, has launched a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to help in the development of Nigerian communities and the public school system.

VDM took to his social media platform on Instagram to thank his donors for their benevolence, showing proof of every alert he received in regards to his NGO, which amounted to ₦33 million.

“I was really hurt; it was really painful because Davido always comes to the Shrine. He would drink and would not pay; he would bring in like 100 people and would not pay gate fee,” he said.

“When it was now time for his wedding, I did not get an invitation card. I found it really painful; I did not sleep for like one week.”

Kanayo O. Kanayo claims any man unable to provide for his home has no right to sexual intercourse

Weekend Recap In Case You Missed It | Seun Kuti, Davido, Super Eagles, Kanayo O Kanayo, VeryDarkMan

Nollywood veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo shared his opinion about men being unable to provide for their families and homes, stating that these men should be shunned from performing any sexual activity with their partners and lovers.

The 62-year-old man took to his social media platform to say that financial responsibility is one of the most significant things that is expected of a husband in a marriage. He also advised women not to cover up their husband’s bad financial behaviours, which could breed laziness and irresponsibility.

“…But I am saying on this note that a man who cannot feed his family has no need and no use to use his private part on a woman. It is a responsibility. This is advice for young women. Know who you marry.

“I have been disturbed by this. Do not make the defence for man to make him irresponsible. He does not take his bills again especially if your children are still within the growing age. When you have to pay school fees and so on, it brings a whole lot to the woman.

“It brings pressure on the woman. I have a personal experience of somebody who, even if the wife’s car goes bad, pretends he does not know. It got to a level when the conversion became so open. There is a need for every man to be hardworking.”

The national grid collapsed for the sixth time in 2024

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | The National Grid Collapsed for the Sixth Time in 2024

On Monday, October 14, the national grid collapsed again for the sixth time in 2024. Nigerians complained about their light blinking before it went off, signalling that something must have gone wrong with the grid.

A statement was later released by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on its X platform, confirming Nigerians’ suspicion about the national grid collapsing.

“Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas,” AEDC said.

Teenager sues JAMB, NUC, and education ministry for admission age policy

A 15-year-old Nigerian student has sued the Ministry of Education, the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) over their recently enforced admissions age policy barring any teenager below 18 from taking the JAMB examinations and applying to universities.

The student, identified as Chinamere Opara, filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja through Maxwell Opara, his father, who doubles as a lawyer.

According to the lawsuit, the teenager demanded that the three respondents should declare that their age policy was unconstitutional and discriminatory. The father of Chinamere revealed that his son was poised to study medicine and surgery, a course that takes six years in the university; he would serve for a year and partake in a one-year externship.

He stated that the admissions age policy would hinder the proposed track that his son had planned out for his life.

Tinubu claims Nigeria’s economic challenges are insignificant and adaptable

President Bola Tinubu has spoken up about the current economic challenges in the country, claiming that they are insignificant and can be manageable as other nations have also experienced similar challenges.

The President, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit, said Nigeria will overcome its current troubles with the right collaborations and policies.

“I want to emphasise that the challenges before us are insignificant and manageable and can be overcome. With the right policies, the right partnerships, and the right level of commitment, Nigeria can emerge stronger, more competitive, and more resilient.” he urged Nigerians.

Nigerians earning above ₦1.5 million monthly to pay 25% tax

Taiwo Oyedele, the chairman of the presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms has announced that Nigerians living in the country and earning above ₦1.5 million every month will be asked to pay 25% personal tax under the new economic stabilisation bill.

The chairman said while those earning above ₦1.5 million will be asked to pay the tax, those earning below will be exempted from the personal tax or reduced depending on the salary range.

“Today, if you earn N100 million in a month, nobody hates the 19% effective personal income tax rate. We are taking that up to 25% of the ratio income. That’s because you need to balance people.”

Libya’s FA reveals they also experienced similar treatment as the Super Eagles while in Nigeria

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | The National Grid Collapsed for the Sixth Time in 2024

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has finally spoken up about the treatment of the Nigerian footballers in its country, saying it was not intentional as there was no foul play or sabotage involved.

They also alleged that their team, the Libyan Footballers, had experienced similar issues upon their first visit to Nigeria during the first leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The LFF claimed that when their footballers were treated in the same light, they had taken it in good faith and did not accuse anyone or question Nigeria’s integrity.

Who Should Pay The House Rent?

$

There have often been several discourses concerning financial freedom, responsibility, and how to treat one’s spouse in a marriage. Questions about who should pay the house rent between the husband and wife if one (particularly the wife) earns more. This question has bred many great gender battles on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Reddit.

For instance, a perplexed husband comes online to narrate his plight as an under-earning husband, whereas his wife probably makes millions of naira. He asks if he needs to pay his house rent when he already takes care of the children’s school fees and groceries.

There are many ways to answer the question of who should pay the house rent between a husband and wife. Still, before we respond, it is imperative to know that there are different kinds of people in Nigeria, so it is advised that you know who you court before you wed your worst nightmare.

Relationships go beyond just kisses and hugs; each family and each couple have their dynamic way of handling their matters, and that is why we are not proposing a finite answer to the question but merely showcasing that what is good for the goose might be bad for the gander.

To avoid financial problems with your wife, you must ask yourself, what kind of woman did you marry? In Nigeria, it is commonly drilled into men since adolescence that they will become providers in their families. As such, the responsibility for a home’s financial needs is rested solely on their shoulders. Meanwhile, the women are groomed to become home carers, taking care of the house while ‘Oga sir’ works to put food on the table.

This is not a bad idea for those who would instead stick with the archaic ways of societal conditioning; however, the same cannot be said for a couple who believes in doing things equally. You see, many average Nigerian households do not practice these archaic family/gender roles as they are often unable to afford that lifestyle. A double-income household is best advised in any family. For a husband to conveniently state that he wants to care for the house’s complete financial responsibilities, he must be well-to-do.

Due to the societal and mental conditioning placed on some Nigerian men and women, the general notion of any family is that the man, father and husband provide. At the same time, the wife’s efforts are often disregarded and seen as insignificant.

Money commands respect in Nigeria, and for a country ranked 46th poorest in the world, it is no shock that money has all power. Unfortunately, love is not all that rules a home, as there are bills to pay, ideologies to consider and the desire to grow with a person financially, emotionally, socially, and psychologically.

Without derailing from the initial topic of who should pay the house rent, let us say, Akin, a husband, earns ₦1 million yearly, and his wife, Ada, recently got a job promotion that boosts her annual income from ₦700,000 to ₦2 million. They have both been paying a house rent of ₦500,000 divided into ₦100,000 and ₦400,000; it comes down to the lovers and their personalities determining the way forward.

Ada may not pay the most for their house rent as a wife, but she would be given other financial responsibilities that would still provide her with enough to save for their children and rainy days.

Similarly, if a wife earns more than her husband, the only logical thing to do is share the house rent between themselves in a way that would not cripple the other party. Why does rent have to be paid solely by one party in a romantic partnership sealed with vows that promise to be there for one another, rich and poor?

It all boils down to the mentalities and behaviours of every lover when the conversation about money is brought up. Do you have a stingy wife who would instead do the bare minimum? If she is a career-driven woman, have you discussed how to raise your family? If she earns more, is she expected to cook, clean, take the kids to school, focus on her work, and still pay half the bills at home?

Scenarios like this lead to hypothetical questions about what a person brings to the table in a relationship and many factors must be considered before one answers that question. There is no definite response to who should pay the house rent, but we can better narrate the things to consider before putting that question out on the internet.

Did you marry a man who has a fragile ego? Is he worried about what society will think of him if the world hears that you, the wife, pay more than he does? What solutions do you have for that? Do not share your marital information with anyone. A family’s secrets are best kept within themselves, well, secrets such as the finances of household expenses.

Is your spouse comfortable paying the same rent pattern despite one of you earning nearly double the other? Have a seat and discuss how best to navigate the new increment in finances; they say closed mouths don’t get fed, and it would do more good to get a topic out in the open than keep it in and assume the other party would like to split the bills.

So, who pays the house rent in a family? Well, that answer belongs to the family with the bills to pay. Are they committed to working together as partners, or would one person stick with their traditional beliefs and keep paying alone? Every home should be a haven for those living there; squabbling over finances will only hurt everyone mentally or emotionally.
