Introducing White Walker by Johnnie Walker

Send a raven – Scotch has officially entered the realm. In collaboration with HBO® and Game of Thrones, Johnnie Walker has unveiled the new White Walker by Johnnie Walker. This limited-edition Scotch Whisky is inspired by the most enigmatic and feared characters on the hit show – the White Walkers – and is here for fans to enjoy as anticipation builds towards the final season.

Known by their icy blue eyes and led by the Night King, the undead army of White Walkers have emerged from the Frozen North bringing with them the chill of winter and now a limited-edition whisky that evokes their icy world.  Created by whisky specialist George Harper, alongside the small team of expert blenders at Johnnie Walker, this innovative whisky is best served directly from the freezer, echoing the chilling presence of the White Walkers.

The bottling brings you right to the Frozen North with an icy white and blue design along with the iconic Johnnie Walker Striding Man now fashioned in armour to fit in among the ranks of the Night King’s forces. Utilising temperature-sensitive ink technology, fans will be reminded that “Winter is Here” from an unexpected graphic icy reveal on the bottle when frozen.

The Scotch has notes of caramelised sugar and vanilla, fresh red berries with a touch of orchard fruit and features Single Malts from Cardhu and Clynelish – one of Scotland’s most Northern distilleries. Blender George Harper used the Frozen North as his starting point for creating White Walker by Johnnie Walker. He said: “Whiskies from Clynelish have endured long, Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the long periods endured by the Night’s Watch who have ventured north of the wall – so it was the perfect place to start when creating this unique whisky.”

“We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw the vision from Johnnie Walker for a way to collaborate we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with White Walker by Johnnie Walker. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping this delicious whisky as they wait for season eight and beyond,” said Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing & Retail at HBO.

White Walker by Johnnie Walker is available in Shoprite, Spar, Game and other retails stores near you a price point of N14,000 Nigerian SRP: N14,000 for 700ml (41.7% ABV).

Manchester United has finally cemented Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s position as the team’s permanent manager. The team in making the announcement early Thursday said that Solskjaer was given a three-year deal following his successful run with the team as interim manager.

Ed Woodward, Executive Vice Chairman of the team expressed his satisfaction with the appointment and believes that the team’s future looks promising with Solskjaer leading the way.

“Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves. More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club.

This all means that he is the right person to take Manchester United forward. I want to thank Ole and the coaching team for everything they have done so far and congratulate him on this richly deserved appointment. The fans and everyone at the club are behind him as he looks to take us where we need to be and build the next stage of our history,” he stated.

In a statement Solskjaer released after attaining his new position, he revealed:

“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here. The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far.

This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.”

Since joining the team, Solskjaer has managed to lead the team’s campaign in the UEFA Champions League farther than anyone expected. This is as he managed to catapult the team to a good enough position that may see them end rank as one of the top four teams in the English Premier League at the end of the season.

Solskjaer’s record since joining the team reads 19 games played, 14 won, 2 drawn, 3 lost. Leaving fans with the question, ‘Who else is there to appoint?’  Indeed, the man’s impressive record is enough to have landed him the job a while ago.

I used to make this mistake a lot, and today I continue to be surprised when people make that elementary mistake.

People get unhappy, and they assume the solution is somewhere outside. Once, they get a new job, go to a new country, get a new lover, buy a new car, get a new breast, go to a new resort, move to a new apartment.

Now, these things can help. They can help you clear the debris that steals your clarity, and limits your range of actions.

But what you may need to understand is that they are means to an end: they are never the end in itself.

Happiness is completely an internal game.

When you carry your unhappiness over relationships to another country, you are still there with the unhappiness. Because the happiness is inside of you. And many of us make desperate decisions in these circumstances, so you are most likely going to a space without really considering if it will provide the means to the end that you seek. We just run to that new thing because we hope it will be our salvation.

And very many times people go to a new country to find out they are as dissatisfied with their jobs there as they are with their jobs here. They go to a new state to find out the men there carry as much scum as the men in their state of origin. They buy a big car to make themselves feel better, and then their friends buy a bigger car and they realise that jealousy cannot be cured with a new acquisition.

Happiness comes when you find peace within yourself, when you love yourself wholly and you create a force field of emotional self-sufficiency around yourself. It is not to be found anywhere but within yourself – your thoughts, and then your emotions.

To think that is the most elementary mistake a person looking for happiness can make.

Viola Davis taps Nnedi Okorafor, Wanuri Kahiu to adapt Octavia Butler’s ‘Wild Seed’ for Amazon!

It’s the biggest news this week in black popular culture: Viola Davis will help to adapt the first of Octavia Butler’s Afrofuturist patternist books Wild Seed for Amazon, a television series that has on board Nnedi Okorafor to write the script and Wanuri Kahiu to direct. This is a strong, beautiful line up of creative minds developing a project that help establish black sci-fi canon.

Okorafor is a huge fan of Butler’s works, and Wild Seed was one of the Afrofuturist books she came across as a young, aspiring writer who was yearning to see science fiction that didn’t center white characters.

Viola Davis says that the book, written by Butler who died in 2006, “shifted” her life. Speaking to Deadline, she said that, “It is as epic, as game changing, as moving and brilliant as any science fiction novel ever written. Julius and I are proud to have this masterpiece in our hands. It fulfils our promise and legacy to be disrupters. Octavia Butler was a visionary and we look forward to honoring the scope of her work and sharing it with the world.”

Wild Seed tells the story of two African immortals and their journey through time at two ends of a vast ideological divide. Doro is a spirit who stays powerful by killing people, and creates a network of breeding stock “seed villages” to maintain his immortality. Then there’s Anyanwu, a healer and shapeshifter who Doro uses as breeding stock for his own gain, until she eventually stands up against him and changes the dynamic of their relationship.

The novel takes place in pre-colonial America, and thematically explores issues like slavery, eugenics, and gender dynamics. However, it’s also been classified as an early and influential example of Afrofuturistic storytelling—primarily in how it sets the stage for the Patternist series, which explores a millennia of genetic development and change in a race of powerful black superhumans—a process that started with Doro’s selective breeding practices.

No release date for Wild Seed has been announced yet, but trust that I will giddily bring you all details and updates as the series develops.
