A Tibetan Mastiff has been sold for almost $2 million at a “luxury pet fair” in the eastern province of Zhejiang in China.

This sale, reported by Agence France-Presse, is the most expensive one on record topping the 2011 sale of a red mastiff at $1.6 million.

The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient breed of dog which looks more like a lion than a member of the dog family.

The unnamed buyer is said to be a 56-year-old property developer from Qingdao who dropped a whopping 12 million yuan for the dog.

The breed was nicknamed the “dog of the moment” by the Associated Press in 2010 and it has come to be seen as an ultimate status symbol.
