Tobi Amusan of Nigeria broke the women’s 100-meter hurdles world record on Monday at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, but the win has sparked a lot of debate.
Amusan blasted to a victory in the first of three semi-finals in the first track event of the third session of the 10th day of competition with a timing of 12.12 seconds.
It smashed the previous best of 12.20sec set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016. Harrison was also in the first semi-final, finishing second in 12.27sec.
However, there was some discussion in Oregon about the accuracy of the stopwatch as a slew of scorching performances, including personal bests and national records, were established.
The legendary American sprinter Michael Johnson, who won four Olympic gold medals during his illustrious career, questioned the veracity of the 100-meter hurdles timings being recorded and suggested something was wrong.
Heat 2 we were first shown winning time of 12.53. Few seconds later it shows 12.43. Rounding down by .01 is normal. .10 is not.
The former American sprinter has received a lot of backlash following these comments. Many Nigerians have found his comments to be racist and demeaning. They believe that he was suggesting that it was impossible for a Nigerian to accomplish such a feat.
Here are some of the reactions.
Michael Johnson isn't happy that a Nigerian won the 100 meters hurdles (he would have loved for an American to win that race).
Michael Johnson has given Nigerians quality material to transfer aggression on.
Was he doing his job? absolutely! Should he have said it the way he did? I’m not so sure Would he have said it if a fellow American broke the record? Absolutely not !!
Johnson’s worries won’t matter because Amusan’s new world record will stand.
Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the Jamaican duo of 2015 global champion Danielle Williams and Britany Anderson, American Alia Armstrong, Bahamian Devynne Charlton, and British Cindy Sember will all compete in the final alongside Amusan and Harrison.
Phyna, real name Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, 25, is the “unusual” Tiktok user who will say it as it is. In her videos on Tiktok (an account that has over 100,000 followers and counting), she’s either talking about relationship, sex, the struggles of genders, and everything inbetween.
“My view on relationships is: Na mumu dey fall in love,” she says.
The lingo on her social platforms is raw, giving you a sense that she’s going into the Big Brother Naija House Season 7 with the entertainment y’all crave – something she believes herself.
But she says she doesn’t like the idea of malice.
She considers herself jovial, and maintains she is allergic to gossip.
“I don’t condone gossip, and a lot of people know I hate it. You can never gossip about someone to me.”
She says she is in the BBNaija House to make a difference.
Phyna does not seem to have built or started a career before now, unless you’re going with “content creator”. So, we can argue that BBNaija is a big leap for her.
Daniella Peters
“Today’s Drop” for Daniella Utangbe Peters, 22, who is from Cross River, is that she is a Housemate on BBNaija.
Daniella is a content creator, spoken word artist – add humanitarian – and we hope to see this part of her in the house. She’s also reportedly the CEO of a logistics company.
Unlike Phyna, Daniella believes in love and is open to finding it one day.
Daniella believes Big Brother Naija is the perfect stage to showcase her creativity. “I want to be in the entertainment industry. I strongly believe I belong here”.
As you’ll find with other housemates, her social accounts are relatively empty, as a way to signify a new beginning. Also, because it seems to be a rule to wipe evidence of their past from the internet before they enter the house.
Pharmsavi
Pharmsavi, real name Akpan Ikin Saviour, 26, (Birthday – July 10) is a pharmacist, and finished in 2017 from the Delta State University (Delsu).
Saviour wants to pursue a career in acting because he is passionate about life. He also likes table tennis and does graphic designs too.
“I am a perfectionist. People always say I suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) because I like things to be clean and in order,” Pharmsavi says. A trait that could cause the entertainment in the house.
He seems to want to leave the pharmaceutical field and hopes BBNaija will help him start his career with Nollywood.
Kess
Kess, real name Kesiena Tony Adjekpovu, 28, is a businessman, and has different talents, including singing, dancing, acting.
He is married but has asked that people don’t see him that way in the house.
*Whispers*: he probably agreed with his wife that “stuffs” may happen in the house and he’s not assuring that he won’t fall into temptation. But, he had done a video call with her before his announcement as a Housemate that he looks “forward to doing a 100 years with her.”
Angelbaby (as her social account reads) is
Irish Philipina American that lives, most likely with Kess, in California, US., and is a photographer.
There’s no information on his business (es) but being in the house is a dream come true for him, knowing he has been a fan of the reality TV show.
Kess graduated from the department of Political Science, Delta State University, in 2018, so may be doing some politricking in the house.
Amaka
Amaka, full name Chiamaka Crystal Mbah, 23, is from Anambra, and is a health worker, but her professional experience on LinkedIn says she last worked as a Customer Service Specialist at GLO – an IT services and consulting company.
Amaka is in the house for fun and is already in conversations for her endowments.
Although she admits to holding grudges, Amaka reckons she makes up for it by being honest. “You will always know where you stand with me”.
A younger Amaka
The housemate, sounding very confident of her strategies and plots, says that she would bring in some drama as a lover and fighter. She’s the first housemate of this season to hit the trends table.
Her motto is: “Grab the bull by the horns and forge ahead.” This is why she’s already stating that she’s a parrot and will bring the entertainment to this show’s season 7.
Cyph
Cyph, real name Bright Hidi Nwekete, 27, is an art lover, movie junkie and music freak. He’s a UI/UX and graphics designer and has an admirable portfolio.
Cyph hails from Imo and studied Electrical Engineering at Madonna University in 2018. He lives in Abuja.
He had interned as a Broadcast and IT Engineer at NTA in 2019, but that was not a career he wanted to continue.
He signed up for Big Brother Naija because “I’ve always wanted to be seen or known beyond the comfort of my home, phone and friends. I have a lot to give to society and I see BBNaija as that first step.”
His motto is: “You only live once”.
Cyph has an unlaunched clothing brand he calls WEIRD and may use the BBN house as an opportunity to kick-start that dream.
Meanwhile, we love weird, especially because it adds spice to the entertainment in the house.
Ilebaye
Ilebaye, full name Ilebaye Odiniya,
21, is a criminology and security studies graduate and entrepreneur.
Like Phyna, Ilebaye doesn’t believe in love and feels romantic relationships are all about pretence.
“Maybe one day I will find a reason to believe in love, for now, not a chance,” she says.
Her tattoo will immediately draw your attention, and she’s in the house to be easy-going and fun – traits to cover up her blunt and nonchalant attitude.
Ilebaye believes Big Brother Naija is the perfect platform to sell herself and gain exposure, which will be good for her business.
“Let’s not forget all the other opportunities that come with being a BBNaija Housemate”. Yeah, we know these things!
She is the CEO of O.I. Clothings and we know what may happen next to her brand that’s still trying to find its way as at the time of writing this.
Khalid
Khalid, full name Ismail Rukuba Ahalu
Khalid, 22, is an automobile dealer, and is a non-committer in relationships, but likes to hang around with the right people, and engage in extreme sports.
Khalid, a graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University, who describes himself as “chronically single”, is not looking for love at the moment, but feels like he hit the jackpot where friendship is concerned, which is more than enough.
*Whispers* so he’ll not be sailing a ship in the house? Hope he does, because ‘nay’ is boring.
He is a freelance graphic designer and muralist from Plateau that loves to try new things; ultimate reason he is in the BBNaija house.
“With my talents, I know I’m supposed to do greater things than I am doing right now. My friends and family never fail to remind me, so I owe it to them and myself to be great,“ he says.
Khalid has been a motivational speaker and his social handles tell this part of his story better. He’s also an affiliate marketing enthusiast.
Beauty
Beauty, full name Beauty Etsanyi Tukura, 24, is a lawyer from Taraba who was crowned Miss Nigeria in 2019, becoming the country’s 43rd beauty to win the pageant.
She also held the ‘Most Beautiful Girl Taraba’ title, from 2015 to 2017.
The law graduate of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Ondo is in the Big Brother Naija House because “I love a good challenge, and I am very entertaining. Most importantly, I need the platform to further build my brand as Beauty Tukura. I know that being in the House will change my life and I am ready for that change and all that it comes with.”
She went to American University of Nigeria Academy in Yola (Adamawa) for her senior secondary education, and her other dream is to empower young girls to be the best version of themselves, and we hope she pushes that dream while in the house.
“From the outset, I stated that my target is between the ages of 12 and 16 years. I feel that it’s a very important age in the life of a girl-child. That’s the age where you catch them young. So, I am going to be running empowerment programmes of different types,” she said on the event of winning the beauty crown.
Is she going to be teaching us real feminism while in the house?
Groovy
Groovy, real name Henry Olisaemeka Orakwue, 26, is an artist, fashion entrepreneur and model.
He is an ambitious individual from Anambra, and he has a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos, having gone to St. Finbarrs College for his secondary education.
Groovy has been selling designer wears on @hengroovy_collections (Instagram) for four years now and may promote that, alongside a music career while in the house.
Groovy reckons his argumentative nature could rub his fellow Housemates up the wrong way.
“I don’t back down if I feel I’m right about something, unless the facts state I’m wrong. I’m also very principled, so I hardly bend my will to please others, unless it’s the right thing to do.”
He is in the house because “I want to be famous, wealthy, influential and powerful. I want to be a voice for change in my country and in the world and this show is the platform to showcase who I am, and who I can be to the world.”
Groovy is also an interesting writer.
Bryann
Bryann, real name Brian Chukwuebuka Chiji, 24, born October 28, from Imo, is a singer, songwriter who started churning out sounds since 2019.
“I would call myself an extravert; which is a mix of both an introvert and an extrovert. I have random bursts of energy and I have low-energy days, but I understand how to navigate people in either of these situations,” Bryann says.
Bryann is at his happiest when he is being creative and hopes Big Brother Naija will give him the platform to interact with people, raise his social currency and also create awareness about his music.
His focus on his music career is good and his social handles tell that story better. His time in the house should increase visibility for him.
Christy O
Christy O, full name Christiana Oluwafunke Ojumu, 24, is a beauty entrepreneur who runs a business called Christy O Cosmetics.
She describes herself as a “funny, smart and hardworking extrovert” and admits you are more than likely to find her “where the fun is” on any given day.
Her major weakness? “I’m a perfectionist, which means I’m usually not satisfied with a result, especially when a task has been performed by someone else”. She is also argumentative and sarcastic, traits that may annoy her fellow Housemates.
Christy O feels she’s the right person for this experience. “I am excellent at putting on a good show. Big Brother Naija is about entertaining, educating and being creative. I think I can be great at that,” she says.
Christy O had announced that her business was going to return in September 2021, but it was until February 2022 that a product was announced restocked. You should expect ‘more wins’ for her entrepreneur career even while in the house.
Bella
Bella, full name Chidimma Bella Okagbue, 25, from Anambra, looks like she loves life; at least, that’s what her Instagram page says, and she’s possibly taking that disposition into the house.
She is a Political Science graduate from UNILAG and is a content creator.
Bella says she gets along with guys mostly, so we should be expecting a serious talkable ‘ship’ with her.
However…“my bluntness. I am fearless, so I don’t sugar-coat my words. I tell it like it is, and people hate to hear the truth,” may cause friction with other housemates.
Bella decided to sign up for Big Brother Naija because she wants to be rich and famous.
“I do not ever want to introduce myself. I want to walk into a room and be recognised. I love a life of comfort and intentional happiness”.
Bella is the younger sister of Sandra Okagbue, the popular model/beauty queen and Face of Delta Soap and her older brother is Chris Okagbue who is also a model, actor/producer and the winner of Gulder Ultimate Search 2011.
So, if she wins this, we have siblings who are taking the bull by the horn and putting that horn in their pockets!
Eloswag
Eloswag, real name Eloka Paul Nwamu, 27, says “I’m the next big thing out of Naija and I auditioned to make the House freaking fantastic.”
He is a dancer, music artist, video editor, and DJ.
Eloswag says he is in no rush to get boo’d up because he has been “served his breakfast” a couple of times.
“Besides, I feel relationships only work better if you have money”.
However, we all know you may not withstand spending up to 20 days with people in a house and not look for a partner.
He loves to try out new things and feels Big Brother Naija is just the show for him.
“I love networking and I want to have fun. I feel this platform was created to uplift the youth and the chosen contestants, and I think I’d fit the role perfectly,” he says.
Doyin
Doyin, full name Doyinsola Anuoluwapo David, 26, is a medical radiographer.
Doyin is hoping Big Brother Naija will help change the direction of her life as she finds medicine “incredibly boring and I want to see if there is anything for me in the entertainment industry. Also, I just want to make more money than I’m currently making.”
She says making friends is not exactly her forte, so we should expect less from her in that aspect in the house.
Does she remind you of anyone? A former housemate? Think about it.
Adekunle
Adekunle, full name Adekunle Tobilola Olopade, 27, is a digital marketing consultant.
Adekunle hopes to win this season of Big Brother Naija so he can help his mother pay off her mortgage, loans and debt.
He is not afraid to take up challenges, even though he describes himself as a peace-loving individual.
As for relationships with housemates, there may be a problem considering “the fact that I’m always right; and by the way, I never say anything I don’t know, could be considered annoying. Also, I learned recently that I use a lot of big grammar when I speak.”
Adekunle announced July 30, 2021, on Instagram that he’ll be auditioning to be a housemate and there he is.
He is politically-inclined and uses hashtags like #runningforoffice2027 to show this.
One more thing…Adekunle creates adire designs.
Jack of many trades?
Allysyn
Allysyn, full name Osy Allysyn Audu, 25, is a content creator, YouTuber and aspiring model, who graduated from Babcock University in 2017.
After investing all her money in furniture for a show she wanted to start on YouTubw and losing it all when Covid-19 hit, Allysyn is eager to get it all back and then some, by winning Big Brother Naija.
She also hopes appearing on the show will help her build her brand.
“I want to do social media full-time, I want to continue modelling and I also want to be a television presenter.”
“I take everything as a joke, and I like to do things in my own time,” she says. Traits that could annoy her fellow housemates.
Dọtun
Dọtun, full name Oladotun Mofiyinfoluwa Oloniyo, 26, works in a hospital as a medical physiologist and moonlights as a personal trainer on his days off.
He describes himself as “fun, good looking and spontaneous” and admits he never backs down from a challenge.
Let’s see how that plays in the house and beyond.
Dotun has aspirations of taking over the entertainment industry.
He graduated as one of the University of Ibadan’s top students. He was also a finalist on the Mr Tourism Nigeria 2018 show, no wonder he likes to walk around shirtless.
“I’m opinionated and confident, and some people don’t like it much,” Dotun says.
When quizzed about habits that may rub his fellow housemates up the wrong way. Dotun reckons he has the perfect blend of competitiveness and excitement to help him stand out in the Big Brother Naija House.
Chomzy
Chomzy, real name Esther Chioma Ndubueze, 22, is an entrepreneur who loves the simple things in life; sewing, travelling and twerking.
Some of Chomzy’s proudest moments come courtesy of her pageant and modelling work, as well as the multiple awards she has received for her humanitarian and school work.
Chomzy hopes Big Brother Naija will make her rich and famous.
“I want to be successful in my business and I want to find love too.”
Giddyfia
Giddyfia, real name Gideon Anieti Nwawo, 24, a Mechatronics Engineer from Ikot Ekpene, says he got his ‘fia’ from a combination of praises from people around him during his fitness activities and the song from one of Africa’s finest, Davido.
One of his favourite achievements is graduating from university with top honours.
He is a fitness buff and even won the 2019 ‘Male Physique of the Year’ award in college.
Giddyfia feels he will make a good Housemate because he is kind, caring, smart and fun to be with.
“There are things about me that people will love to see and emulate,” he says.
Diana
Diana, full name Diana Isoken Edobor, 33, is a Project Manager from Edo but lives in Abuja.
Diana values friendship and believes in treating people the way she would like to be treated; with love, loyalty and respect.
When asked about romantic relationships, Diana confirms that she is single.
“Guys perceive me as sophisticated, high maintenance and too expensive to approach. When they eventually get to know me, they realise I am actually a very lovable and down to earth person,” she says.
She aims to kick start her acting career, build a network of friends and use the Big Brother Naija platform to establish her brand, and also impact the world in the critical areas of poverty, education and climate change.
Hermes
Hermes has the ability to have two girlfriends who know themselves and not have HBP. Talmabout a true African who understands polygamy – polyamory specifically.
Hermes Chibueze Iyele is a
performance artist, and has had the opportunity to perform some of his original dance pieces at reputable festivals in Lagos, Glasgow and Rotterdam, and has also appeared in music videos for afrobeats stars including Burna Boy, Davido and Ajebo Hustlers.
Hermes counts basketball, public speaking and American flag football as some of his interests.
He auditioned for the Big Brother Naija show because “I’d like to show people just how much the love and creativity that is built in such tight living circumstances can change the world and help people grow.”
His relationship with other housemates may experience strain because “I’m one to tell the truth, but over time I’ve realised many people are not particularly fond of perspectives they don’t agree with, so I tell the truth, but diplomatically.”
ChiChi
ChiChi, full name Chinenyenwa Desire Okoebor, 22, is an exotic dancer you may be excited already, knowing you’ll see all of ‘that’ in the house.
She is also a chef, who loves swimming, dancing and travelling, and considers herself “an unshakeable ambitious goal-getter”.
She admits her bluntness can sometimes tick people off, but she doesn’t mind because she believes in sincerity.
“It’s either I say things the way they are, or I don’t say it at all”.
Chichi wants to be on Big Brother Naija to show people that there is more to exotic dancing than meets the eye.
“It saved my life,” she says when she was announced as a housemate.
“I have so many things to showcase and I believe the world really needs to see me. The Big Brother Naija House is the only place that will bring me that kind of spotlight,” she says.
Sheggz
Sheggz is the one that’ll take London to the house.
Segun Daniel Olusemo, 26, is an actor and professional footballer based in England. He has played as a right winger for Eastbourne Borough which he joined in February 2020.
The last match for Sheggz was against Blackpool in the English FA Cup, when the match result was a 0-3 Eastbourne Borough home loss.
But, after an injury last year, he started acting again and recently scored a role in a production directed by Tola Odunsi.
Sheggz considers himself down to earth, relatable, and ambitious.
Sheggz believes he has a lot to show the world.
“Nigerians have talent, we have swag, we have vibes, we’re smart, we’re ambitious and to be honest, we’re all over the world smashing goals and achieving”.
NB: The ages of the housemates were provided by Big Brother Naija
The level-up edition of Big Brother Naija Season 7 began over the weekend, and Hermes is one of the intriguing personalities that is already grabbing a lot of attention.
He is an outgoing young man who disclosed that he had two real girlfriends who are both aware of themselves.
Hermes described to his fellow housemates his polyamorous relationship during a round table discussion.
All three persons in the relationship are there voluntarily, the reality TV personality stated during the discussion.
Hermes continued by saying that he still gets jealous even though he is permitted to date other women other than the two women he’s involved with.
The dancer who identifies as an “orisha” on Instagram is a model who has performed in music videos for Chris Martin and Davido and Burna Boy’s “Monsters you Made” and “Ke Star” with Focalistic.
One of his girlfriends is said to be a German and the other is a Nigerian from Akwa Ibom state.
His German girlfriend had some really nice things to say about him on her Instagram story.
The reactions to Hermes’ polyamorous relationship have been quite interesting. While some are not phased at all by his relationship status, others have made jest of it and considered it not to be a serious one.
Hermes is actually intelligent but this housemates will not shut up to learn, many people are actually in a confused relationship and most of Nigeria girls are in same stuff with there husband unknowingly just that Hermes partnership/ relationship is clear to both party #BBNaija
One thing is for sure, non-monogamous relationships are hardly spoken about in Nigeria and this season presents a challenge to the average viewers’ rather conservative worldview.
Here at Ynaija, however, we are here for this joyful ride.
Over the years, fans have benefited immensely from trend-setting and intelligent experiences that the brand has always been committed to providing. From discount sales to competitions and social media activities, Infinix is always in close engagement with her fans.
Several lucky fans have been able to get support from Infinix in turning their dreams into reality. One of such lucky fans is Samson Omotosho, a professional and award-winning roller skater with the handle @iamsupatosh on Instagram where he racks thousands of views and support from fans.
With the launch of the Infinix Note 11, the brand challenged its users to dare to play big in their respective fields and a social media challenge tagged #PlayBigWithInfinixNote11Challenge promised a ₦500, 000 cash prize for the winner.
Samson Omotosho, known as @iamsupatosh on Instagram, jumped on the challenge and brought out his best moves in a video he created amidst the struggles that come along with getting a quality video done. After he got that out of the way, he asked his fans to support him by voting for him in the #PlayBigWithInfinixNote11Challenge, as he hoped for the best to come out of this competition.
Samson Omotosho at the 49th edition of the Cotonou Skating Open Challenge
At the end of the #PlayBigWithInfinixNote11Challenge campaign, Samson Omotosho emerged as the overall winner with the most creative video and highest votes. Infinix awarded him with a ₦500,000 cash prize, brand promotion and a radio tour sponsored by Infinix.
The empowerment grant gave him massive exposure to a wider audience to amplify his skating talent. Considering the fact that the roller skating industry in Nigeria is underpopulated and hardly growing, his resilience and passion for the sport is inspiring other younger talents to pursue their passion for roller skating.
Samson Omotosho taking second place at the Cotonou Skating Open Challenge
Since then, Samson Omotosho has won several gold medals in competitions around the country. Most recently, he participated as the only Nigerian in the 49th edition of the Cotonou Skating Open Challenge and won a silver medal in free jump. He continues to live his dream of roller skating thanks to a big push from Infinix following his success in the #PlayBigWithInfinixNote11Challenge.
Infinix recently worked with him to create a commercial for the brand which was paid for and he had the opportunity to express his passion and acquired skills in his skating career. Now, the brand is working on sponsoring him for the World Skate Africa Games Cairo Egypt 2022 this October. Meanwhile, Infinix is not done just yet as there are still plans cooking for further sponsorships of the athlete in future.
The Note series from Infinix has always been a big deal and it is an even bigger deal for Samson Omotosho as the #PlayBigWithInfinixNote11Challenge has played a significant role in helping him achieve milestones in his skating career.
Since being signed by YBNL Records, the amazing singer has been the talk of the town and has found mainstream success with his debut EP, “Ololade Asake.”

One of the most popular songs in Nigeria right now is “Peace Be Unto You,” which has received a lot of streams, airplay, and YouTube views.
The singer has produced stunning hit singles with the same quick tempo Amapiano-styled groove, but some fans have urged him to diversify his sound.
Asake joined the American record company EMPIRE Distribution, Records and Publishing Inc. a few days ago.
In a message posted on the record label’s official Twitter account, the music company made the announcement.
We’re happy to officially welcome Mr. Money aka @asakemusik to the EMPIRE family

Kaduna Train Attack: Families of 41 victims protest at Transport Ministry
Families of the remaining 41 people still in captivity yesterday halted activities at the Ministry of Transportation in protest over the lack of prompt action to save their loved ones, who have been held captive for exactly 120 days after terrorists bombed the AK-9 train carrying hundreds of passengers from Abuja to Kaduna and kidnapped them.
Family members of the victims surrounded the Federal Ministry of Transportation’s Abuja headquarters as early as 8 am, barring employees, including top management personnel, from entering their offices.
They put mats at the entrance gate and dared any ministry staff to go over the barricade; they stayed true to their word for more than four hours.
The Transportation Ministry revealed that negotiations had taken place amid the demonstration and that efforts were being made with security organizations to rescue the victims.
A few hours after the demonstration, the terrorists freed four more captives, including Gladys Brumen, Oluwatoyin Ojo, Hassan Lawal, and Pastor Ayodeji Oyewumi, bringing the total number of those held captive to 38.
Police issue a warning to hoodlums ahead of today’s NLC solidarity demonstration
In reaction to the statewide demonstration called by the Nigeria Labour Congress in support of the on-strike Academic Staff Union of Universities taking place on Tuesday, the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps will deploy personnel to crucial infrastructure and institutions today.
The Nigeria Labour Congress gave workers in state capitals and Abuja instructions on Monday to join the demonstration as security agencies moved to deploy their men and officers.
The Commissioners of Police in Ebonyi and Gombe and the police spokespersons in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Plateau, Ogun, Osun, and Gombe confirmed that their men would be at the rally grounds.
Also, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence spokesperson, Shola Odumosu, said armed and unarmed personnel would be on the ground to protect the protesters and Nigerians.
He said, “We understand that at times like this, thugs would want to take advantage and launch their attacks. Among those we will be deploying apart from the armed and unarmed personnel are men from our intelligence department.”
The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Garba Aliyu, said his men would deal decisively with “perpetrators of actions not in conformity with the law’’ during the rally.
Speaking on the security arrangements for the protest, the Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Ishola Babaita, pledged to provide protection for union leaders and other participants during the rally.
The spokesman for the state Police Command, Alabo Alfred, also said that officers and men of the command had been deployed in the strategic locations, including the protest venue, to prevent a breakdown of law and order during the protest.
BBNaija S7: Biggie introduces Tail of House title
Big Brother Naija season 7 has seen the introduction of a new title known as “Tail of House”.
The Tail of House game was introduced prior to the games, which brought together Level 1 and Level 2 roommates for the first time.
Biggie stated that the housemate who performed the poorest during the competition would be named “Tail of House.”
Since the beginning of the program, no participant has ever before received such a title.
Biggie also mentioned the position had unique privileges and obligations which we are yet to discover.
After being the first to flunk out in the games, Bella was announced as the first Tail of House.
Eloswag also became the first Head of House of the season after winning the games.
Apapa Customs impounds container load of tramadol worth N6bn
The seizure of a container load of tramadol smuggled from Pakistan with a street value of roughly N6 billion was reported by the Nigeria Customs Service’s Apapa Command.
Comptroller Yusuf Ibrahim Malanta, Customs Area Controller of Apapa Customs, revealed this over the weekend. He said the drugs were securely covered with towels but were found thanks to the officers’ sharp eyes and the use of a system he named “Forensic Manifest Management System.”
According to Malanta, the offensive items handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, by Customs include “1x20ft container No. PCIU 0183241 laden with eighty-one (81) cartons of 250mg and sixty-nine (69) cartons of 225mg of tramadol tablets (each carton contains 72 rolls, each roll contains 10 packs, each pack contains 10 sachets, and each sachet contains 10 tablets) totaling 150 cartons of tramadol tablets.”
While receiving the container, Mr. Ameh Inalegwu, Apapa Commander of NDLEA, said that the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd), has expressed great pride in the Apapa Customs boss.

What are the possibilities that two people wanting to form a connection will actually get into a fight? With the BBNaija Level Up Housemates, it appears that the odds are quite high.
Amaka and Phyna seemed to be getting along during the weekend, but it appears that their connection is currently gone. While attempting to bond in the early morning hours, they got into a small argument. weird, huh?
With violent remarks, the pair tore one another apart. Amaka and Phyna were originally spotted enjoying what appeared to be a pleasant chat before they abruptly started shouting at each other while the bulk of the season 7 “first house” was asleep.
According to Phyna, Amaka “sounded like someone who wants to play mind-games with everybody.”
Phyna asserted that throughout their conversation, Amaka kept bringing up the other house, where the other 12 roommates are housed, and threatened to enter through the strongest door to learn what was going through their heads.
Phyna was incensed by Amaka’s “mindgame” and questioned what she (Amaka) intended to accomplish by knowing what the other housemates were thinking.
The housemates, who have been friends since moving into the Level Up house, got into a quarrel as a result of this. Amaka overheard Phyna calling her “a giant moron,” “manipulative,” and “senseless.”
Even though Bryann and Beauty intervened, the two kept on bickering at each other.
During their workout session in the garden, Amaka had a rant session with Kess and Daniella, saying she would never be intimidated by anyone. She recalled the quarrel, saying she didn’t know Phyna would take what she said seriously and concluded Phyna was out to use her to shine.
Watch the video below.
Part 1 This was the conversation that led to the major fight between Phyna and Amaka
Following the successful detonation of an object at the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, police in Kogi State stated they had prevented a suspected bomb assault in the state.
Many individuals in the neighborhood were startled by the explosion that resulted from the yet-to-be-identified device being detonated.
A loud explosion was reported within the Ministry’s buildings, which also house the secretary’s office for the Kogi state government and the Ministry of Women Affairs.
Though there was no injury or loss of life, the loud explosion scared workers who were already in their offices preparing for the day’s job.
The state Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka who confirmed the explosion said, “We were informed of a package that looked like a bomb was left on the premises and I immediately deployed the bomb disposal unit there to assess the object.
“The object was immediately blown up. The explosion you heard was the handwork of our bomb disposing unit, brought about by their efforts to blow up the object.”
Egbuka said investigations have commenced to ascertain what the object was.
There have been several incidents of bomb blasts in the state.
Recall that on June 3, a bomb blast in the Idoji area of Okene Local Government Area of the state killed a resident and injured others.
Terrorists attack presidential guards in Abuja, kill eight soldiers
On Friday, gunmen attacked some members of the 7 Guards Battalion of the Presidential Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army.
Eight people were killed and three troops were injured in the event, which happened late on Friday night in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja.
A captain and a lieutenant were among the two officers who were killed; the other victims were soldiers.
The Nigerian Law School in Bwari is the target of the terrorists’ primary strike, and they may already be camped there, according to an army source.
The Nigerian army has not yet responded to the attack in a formal manner.
A variety of intelligence sources have made known that the government was aware of terrorists’ plans to strike certain locations in the capital and that security had been stepped up in the area.
After terrorists attacked a neighborhood close to the Federal Government College, Kwali in the Kwali Area Council of Abuja, the government formally closed the school on Monday.
Portable disqualified from Headies Awards
Habeeb Okikiola, better known by his stage name Portable, has been disqualified from the 15th Headies Awards, which are set to take place this year.
On Tuesday night, the organizers explained why Portable was disqualified. They claimed that the singer founded “One Million Boys,” a rumored cult organization in Lagos.
“The decision to disqualify Mr. Okikiola is accentuated by series of misdemeanors by Mr Okikiola via his social media platforms.
“We shall not condone reckless and uncouth statements from artists and hereby disassociate ourselves from any individual linked to such assembly or activities linked to him as described.
“The music industry demands all-round excellence. It is extremely important for young artists being potential role models to exude professional responsibility, proper decorum and have respect for others”, Headies organizers stated.
Reacting to his disqualification, Portable said: “I am a child of light. I have fame, I have money, I have cars, I have wives, I have children. I am rich. People know me everywhere. I don’t regret my actions”, the singer said in a video while being caressed by his new wife.”
Best Street Artist and Rookie of the Year were the two categories in which Portable was nominated.
ISWAP plots massive attacks on Lagos, Kaduna, others
On Tuesday, there were clear signs that the Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province terrorist organizations intended to strike various states in the North-West, North-Central, and South-West.
Security services were informed by a security report that ISWAP and Boko Haram intended to attack the Federal Capital Territory as well as the states of Lagos, Kaduna, Kogi, Katsina, and Zamfara.
A memo that was leaked earlier on Tuesday from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’s headquarters informed state commands of the impending strikes.
When contacted, Shola Odumosu, a spokesperson for the NSCDC, said that the document was not the work of the security services.
A state commandant, who corroborated the document, claimed that security personnel had been instructed to remain silent in order to prevent panic.
The commandant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Yes, it is true that they (headquarters) issued a security alert to us that we should be careful and we should instruct our men to be watchful. We protect the critical infrastructure and places of worship.
“It is also important that we inform the people so they can be vigilant.”
UK court grants Beatrice bail, denies Ike Ekweremadu
Beatrice, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has been granted bail by a London court.
On Monday, she received a bail order. On the other hand, bail was declined for Ike Ekweremadu.
According to the Common Serjeant of London, judge Richard Marks: “The position is that I have granted bail to Beatrice subject to some fairly stringent conditions, but I have refused bail to Ike.”
Recall that the Metropolitan Police in London detained Ike Ekweremadu and his wife in connection with an alleged scheme to steal David Ukpo Nwamini’s organs.
Ekweremadus were charged with planning to smuggle a homeless man into the UK so they could take his kidney for their daughter.
In accordance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, Beatrice was accused of organizing or supporting another person’s trip with the intention of exploitation between August 1 and May 5, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.
Ike Ekweremadu, the wife’s husband, was accused of conspiring to set up or aid another person’s travel with a view to exploitation, specifically organ harvesting.
FG is toying with an uprising like #EndSARS – NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, warned the government not to toy with another populist uprising similar to the 2020 #EndSARS protest by launching a two-day nationwide protest yesterday against the Federal Government’s failure to end the strike initiated by unions in the country’s university system. So far, the strike has lasted five months.
As a result, the NLC handed the government a two-week deadline to remedy the problems, as set by President Muhammadu Buhari to Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu.
During the solidarity rally held yesterday in support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other unions in the university system, the Congress issued the warning through the chairman of the union’s Lagos State chapter, Mrs. Funmi Agnes Sessy.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, spoke during the march that departed from Under Bridge in Ikeja and moved to Alausa. He expressed dissatisfaction that people in power currently, who he described as being in his generation, seemed determined to destroy the nation’s education system.
He thought back to the good old days when delicious meals cost 50 kobo per day for students in tertiary institutions.
Dr Adelaja Odukoya, the Lagos Zonal Chairman of ASUU, addressed the crowd, lamenting that Nigerian academics are the lowest paid in the world. He also addressed the deterioration of education in Nigeria as a result of the constant strike.
“A professor in Nigeria earns N460,000 monthly after tax; that is bad and shameful. We cannot continue like this. Our universities are no longer attractive and competitive. We are tired of being at home and strike is the last option for us.
“We have an irresponsible and uncaring government. The government that cares about its people must invest in education, especially university education. This protest is for the struggle for the soul of this country,” he said.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has advocated for legislation to control how public servants’ children enroll in schools abroad.
At the solidarity rally held by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday in Yenagoa, Prof. Kingdom Tombra, the union’s chapter chairman for the University of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, announced as much.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the NLC organized the statewide rally in support of ASUU and its member unions in response to the ongoing strike at Nigeria’s public institutions.
“If this is done, it will build a better society by developing formidable educational institutions and improve funding of the university system in Nigeria.
“This struggle is not against government, but about the working class and against the ruling class and we are very committed to it.
“If the rich and poor go to the same university or institution, I don’t think the strike will occur again.
“If they school here and their children are here they will show total support for the university system and the tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” he said.
According to NAN, teachers at government-run institutions started a statewide strike on February 14 in protest of the implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as the industry’s payment system.
Earlier, Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri thanked the ASUU and the NLC for their peaceful protest and pledged to take their requests to the proper authorities in a speech to organized labor.
The Bayelsa NLC Chairman, Mr. John Ndiomu, also spoke and praised the governor for his calm demeanor.
He claimed that at the nationwide solidarity protest, both workers and students were represented.
Ndiomu, urged the federal government to sign the renegotiated draft agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government.
”Adopt University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place IPPIS, Pay Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
“Release of Revitalization Fund, Release white paper on visitation to Federal Universities. Amend NUC law to control proliferation of state universities without funding,” the labour leader said.
The naira has further depreciated in the black market and is now trading for N710 to the dollar on the Aboki Forex exchange website.
According to reports on Wednesday, the exchange rate on the black market is set at N710 to the dollar.
As of Friday afternoon, data from Aboki Forex showed that the national currency, which on Monday was trading for N670 versus the dollar, had dropped even more by 6.7 percent in two days.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) banned the sale of foreign currency to bureau de change operators a year prior to today’s record decline.
Due to their illicit sales of foreign exchange above the market, they were authorized to serve, the BDC operators’ purchases of foreign currency had previously been restricted by the central bank.
BDC operators were a significant part of the black market before the prohibition, helping people who couldn’t legally get foreign currency directly from the CBN to maintain their exchange rates.
The BDC operators’ inability to obtain foreign currency from the CBN has had a significant negative impact on the nation’s economy by increasing pressure on the local currency.
The currency exchange rate was approximately N501 to a dollar when CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele forbade the sale of foreign currency to BDC. However, the value of the naira fell to N670 to the dollar a year following the prohibition.
The apex bank threatened to detain and prosecute Nigerians last week who were using naira to purchase dollars in an effort to further restrict the flow of foreign exchange in the parallel market.
However, Mr. Emefiele has come under fire for neglecting to implement measures that would have helped to stabilize the value of the nation’s currency on the foreign exchange market.
Since Godwin Emefiele took over as governor of the central bank in March 2014, the value of the naira versus the dollar at the Investors and Exporters window has dropped from N164 to N430 on Wednesday.
The Naira dropped from N180 to the dollar in 2014 to N710 on Wednesday in the parallel market.
It’s been only a few days since the start of Big Brother, Level up edition and housemates have wasted no time in shooting shoots and catching feelings.
Bella and Sheggz already appear to be on their way to starting a relationship in the Big Brother House.
Sheggz shot his shot and called Bella beautiful last night as they cuddled together in bed.
Sheggz also acknowledged that while he is interested in Bella, he needs her to demonstrate her openness to his advances.
“If a girl says to me she’s not down, I won’t go hard. It’s different when someone says hmmm, let me see. It’s enough to think she’s considering it. The woman has to give the man something to hold on to,” he said as the two cuddled in bed.
The two have been together nonstop today. They walked into the lounge area wearing haphazardly synchronized clothing, holding hands and flirting as their fellow Level 1 housemates made breakfast in the distance.
Sheggz and Bella are not the only ones shooting shots in the Level 1 House.
Allysyn and Hermes acknowledged their attraction to one another in the bedroom. Hermes is intelligent, according to Allysyn, and although they are very different from one another, they nevertheless have some characteristics.
Despite the fact that she is currently emotionally unavailable, Allysyn wants to get to know him.
She questioned Hermes about wanting to have three women when he revealed that he was polyamorous. Hermes was unable to provide any guarantees, but he regards Allysyn as a “free spirit” and believes that love is “giving and putting an effort into another human’s effort.”
As for Allysyn, several viewers have remarked that she might be interested in Adekunle.
Allysyn is shameless let’s be honest…. Following man up and down since morning. Now sleeping in his bed uninvited. Adekunle should stop being that nice cos she’s clearly misinterpreting things #BBNaija7#BBNaijaLevelUp#BBNaija
— Sketchy BBNaija blogger (@Blaq_Cofee) July 27, 2022
Allysyn should just drop whatever feelings she has for Adekunle. It's starting to look awkward because he's not reciprocating. I want her head back in the game!!! She might not be saying it, but it's eating her up. She needs to be at ease. Kunle is eyeing other girls. #BBNaija
Even though Groovy declined to kiss Beauty, their relationship in the Level 2 House appears to be going well.
However, there was almost a detour when Amaka admitted to Pharmsavi this morning that she had intended to disperse their union. Pharmsavi chuckled heartily at this hilarious news since he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

Senators across parties are clashing on the decision to impeach Buhari due to insecurity
Senators reportedly gave President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week deadline on Wednesday to take effective action to solve the nation’s deteriorating security situation or face impeachment.
After Minority Leader Senator Philip Aduda was prevented by Senate President Senator Ahmad Lawan from introducing a resolution to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to solve the country’s security challenges, the senators, numbering over 20, reportedly sang a song of unity and exited the floor.
The opposition MPs’ move is the most recent in a string of worries expressed by different people and organizations in light of the nation’s increasing level of insecurity.
Later, on behalf of his irate colleagues, Senator Aduda briefed reporters at the National Assembly building.
He claims that President Muhammadu Buhari has been given a six-week deadline to address the nation’s security issues by opposition senators.
Senate summons CBN governor over naira fall but embarks on a two-month break
In response to the recent wild collapse of the naira, the Senate decided on Wednesday to call Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Mr. Emefiele was requested to appear before the Senate in session and speak to the senators privately.
However, the lawmakers failed to set a time for the governor to arrive. The parliamentarians decided to take a two-month break on Wednesday that would finish on September 20.
The discussion on a proposal by Ekiti Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi led to the decision to call the head of the CBN.
The summons take place as the naira depreciates quickly.
El-Rufai threatens to sack Kaduna lecturers involved in ASUU strike
All employees at Kaduna State University (KASU) who are currently participating in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike have been threatened with termination by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Since February, ASUU has been on strike since the government has not complied with its requests.
There have been several unsuccessful attempts to get the lecturers back into the classrooms.
Labor unions started their joint demonstration with ASUU on Monday.
To avoid having their seats declared vacant, El-Rufai urged the teachers to return to the classrooms while appearing on a radio show in Kaduna on Wednesday.
The governor stated that KASU professors had no justification for going on strike. He said that rather than the state administration, ASUU had issues with the federal government.
“The Acting Vice Chancellor has promised me that they would restart, but I have requested that they check to see whether they have truly started working again since I had originally directed that their pay be terminated. But I then learned that they didn’t participate in the strike, so I requested that the matter be looked into and that everyone who received pay while participating in the strike be required to return it.
“This is due to Nigerian legislation, which states that “no labor, no pay.” That is the rule. Therefore, none of the strikers will receive their salaries”, El-Rufai said.
Many injured as unknown gunmen attack Owo again
Just seven weeks after terrorists attacked worshippers in the ancient town of Owo in the Nigerian state of Ondo, unknown gunmen struck the same location once more.
According to reports, a large number of individuals were hurt during the attack on Wednesday night at Folahami Junction, which was home to the Craneburg Construction Company.
The assailants reportedly started shooting at people present, according to eyewitness accounts.
Reports have also mentioned that some explosive devices were also used during the attack.
Even though the number of casualties has not yet been determined, the attack is believed to have harmed a large number of individuals.
Funmi Odunlami, the state police image maker, verified the incident but added that three people were hurt after a gunfight in the town.
According to Odunlami, it is unclear whether the attackers are terrorists or merely bandits.
”Tonight, there was a shooting incident at Craneburg Construction Company Owo, Policemen are currently at the scene, victims have been taken to Hospital and they are in stable condition.
”We can not ascertain the casualty figure now and we also cannot say it was a terrorist attack with the use of explosive devices, but tomorrow( Thursday ) morning, the EOD men of the command will go to the scene” she said.
Odunlami appealed to residents not to panic, that the situation was under control.
Tems makes solo debut on billboard hot 100
Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, Nigerian multi-award-winning singer, made her solo debut on the Billboard Hot 100 list with her 2020 single, “Free Mind,” off her For Broken Ears EP.
Following Terms’ appearance on the soundtrack of the “Wakanda Forever” teaser for Marvel’s Black Panther sequel, “Free Mind” entered the charts on Monday.
The music for the trailer, which was published on Sunday, included Tems’ covers of “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar and “No Woman, No Cry” by Bob Marley.
Tems’ debut solo entry, her fourth appearance on the coveted Billboard Hot 100 list, peaked at No. 90.
Tems had, however, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in May for her appearance on Future’s song “Wait For U.”
The song, which is the sixth on Future’s most recent LP album, I Never Liked You, also includes Canadian rapper Drake.
Tems had also debuted earlier on the Hot 100 last October, with her feature on the “Essence” remix. The hit song by Wizkid also featured Justin Bieber, and peaked at No. 9 on the charts.
However, she got her previous entries into the chart from guest appearances in Drake’s “Fountain”.
Being housed with strangers for months makes it unlikely that you won’t get into a fight with someone.
The BBN “Level Up” housemates appear to be picking fights too soon, in contrast to other housemates from different seasons.
The drama and fights have spanned Phyna and Amaka, Chichi and Bella, and now Adekunle, Doyin, Sheggz, and Chichi.
They had their first altercation on the show as the “Islands” housemates last night.
“There is a village girl from Benin City,” Adekunle stated, as he described the drama his group was performing.
Diana, a native of Benin, misinterpreted his statements and took offense.
Diana defended her hometown by saying that Benin is not a village.
Adekunle attempted to clarify his meaning to her after realizing that she took his statements the wrong way. He explained that he didn’t mean to be condescending because Alysyn is also from Benin.
Surprisingly, his explanation made Chichi enraged, and things only got worse from there.
Adekunle made an effort to identify the reasons for Chichi’s desire for others to understand her but lack of reciprocity.
He questioned whether Chichi had a personal issue with him for her to misinterpret his statements.
Sheggz sided with the opposing group and chastised Adekunle.
Sheggz also slammed his love interest, Bella, for supporting Adekunle.
The roommates got into a furious disagreement and started exchanging words very quickly.
Sheggz gets told to fuck off by Doyin and he becomes angry and accuses her of violating him.
Watch scenes from the fight below.
How another fight went down in #BBNajia#BBNaija7 btw Chichi, Adekunle, Sheggz & Doyin

Not too long ago, Phyna and Amaka also got into a fight.
Amaka, according to Phyna, told her she wanted to get inside the heads of the other roommates.
This worried Phyna, and she told Amaka that it was impossible to read the minds of housemates.
Phyna tried to avoid making a big deal out of her statements, but Amaka persisted in bringing them up.
Amaka’s continual chatter irritated Phyna, who labeled her as “Manipulative” as she considered Amaka’s ideas to be strange.
Amaka broke down in tears because she didn’t like being dubbed a “manipulator.”
Amaka retaliated with several unprintable obscenities, and a fight would have broken out but for the intervention of other housemates.
It seems there will be a lot of drama this season and of course, we are here for it!

Terrorists attack Military checkpoint at Zuma Rock, Abuja, reportedly kill Soldiers in shootout
According to reports, Boko Haram terrorists stormed an army checkpoint near Zuma Rock, which is on the border between the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State, on Thursday night and killed an unknown number of soldiers.
The terrorists reportedly arrived at Zuma Rock, which is on the axis of Madalla and Suleija along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway, at around 8.30 p.m. and surprised the soldiers by opening fire from a variety of angles.
According to sources, the terrorists later gave up on their plan to enter Abuja and withdrew toward the Kaduna Axis.
The bandits, who were reportedly on several motorcycles, attacked some villages and stores in Madalla as they fled and reportedly carried food on their motorcycles.
More soldiers and equipment from the army base in Zuma Barracks were sent as reinforcements to the scene after the terrorists withdrew in order to stabilize and take control of the situation.
According to reports, the fighting caused a severe traffic jam as drivers remained stuck on the Abuja-Kaduna highway out of fear that they might get caught in the crossfire.
The attack comes just six days after terrorists ambushed a Presidential Guards patrol team along the Bwari-Kubwa Road, killing six soldiers and officers as a result.
BBC, Daily Trust To Face Consequences For Terrorism Reporting – Lai Mohammed
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, said on Thursday that the BBC and the Daily Trust will face penalties for glorifying terrorism in their reporting.
Recently, documentaries by the BBC and Daily Trust that featured interviews with bandit warlords were released.
Such reportage, in Mr. Mohammed’s opinion, legitimizes terrorism.
“Let me assure you, they will not get away with this naked glorification of terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.
“When otherwise reputable platforms like BBC give their platform to terrorists, showing their faces as if they’re Nollywood stars . . . I want to assure them that they won’t get away with it, the appropriate sanctions will be meted.
“All I can say is that there is a regulatory body, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and they are also aware of these incidents and are looking at which part of the broadcasting codes have been violated by both the BBC and the Daily Trust,” the minister said.
“But I can assure you that there will be consequences. For those who will argue that BBC is a foreign broadcaster and as such, it is not licensed by NBC, let me assure you, they will not get away with this naked glorification of terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.
“I have said it many times here that the media is the oxygen that the terrorists and bandits need to breathe. When other reputable platforms like BBC now give their platform to terrorists, showing their faces as if they are Nollywood stars, what does that means? I want to assure them they won’t get away with it. There are sanctions to be meted on both the BBC and the Daily Trust.”
PDP Reps caucus joins Senate counterpart over six weeks ultimatum to Buhari
The PDP caucus in the House of Representatives has joined its counterpart in the Senate in giving President Muhammadu Buhari a six-week deadline to address insecurity or face being removed from office.
Following a meeting of the PDP Caucus of the National Assembly on Thursday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, issued the notice.
More than 20 lawmakers attended the meeting, which was presided over by the Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT).
After the parliamentarians met behind closed doors, Mr. Elumelu gave a press briefing on the decision made.
He said that if the nation’s general insecurity is not addressed, House members will also file a formal impeachment complaint against the president.
The lower chamber will start gathering signatures to start impeachment proceedings against Mr. Buhari, according to Mr. Elumelu, if the security situation is not improved by the end of the six-week deadline.
He pointed out that, through resolutions and security summits, the parliamentarians had used every available tool to solve the nation’s security issues.
He alleges that Mr. Buhari disregarded every suggestion made by the Legislators to handle the nation’s security.
He stated that the impeachment effort is a cross-party endeavor rather than a partisan one. He said that although many members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party in power, are in favor of the impeachment attempt, they are reluctant to speak out.
I’ll end banditry in Zamfara if elected president – Atiku
If elected president, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, has vowed to free Zamfara State from terrorist gangs that have killed, kidnapped, and displaced thousands of people.
Mr. Abubakar made this pledge on Wednesday night following a meeting with Dauda Lawal-Dare, the PDP’s candidate for governor of Zamfara State.
According to Atiku, help was on the way for the state’s residents.
He accused the All Progressives Congress administration of allowing the state’s violence to spiral out of control, which he claimed had made the state backward and its residents vulnerable.
According to a statement from the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Atiku stated that the first way to save the state was to vote out the APC.
“In order to achieve that, there is the need for having a united PDP which will be formidable enough to face any opposition no matter how difficult it may be,” Atiku was quoted as saying.
“The best thing to do for the people of Zamfara State is to bring about peace, secure farms, and provide businesses.
“But the situation now is otherwise. We must unseat the APC to rescue and rebuild the state and the country. PDP administration will also resuscitate the textile industry,” he reportedly added.
Okoh takes over as CAN President
Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle’s term as president officially ended on Thursday when the General Assembly of the Christian Association of Nigeria approved the election of Archbishop Daniel Okoh as the organization’s new leader.
After receiving a unanimous vote from the 259 delegates present at CAN’s 12th General Assembly, Okoh, the General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church International, Onitsha, was elected as the organization’s new spiritual leader. He will hold office for a single five-year term.
The new CAN President, in his acceptance speech, charged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to quell the rising insecurity in the country.
He said, “While thanking the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), for his efforts to combat terrorism and banditry, I would like to appeal to His Excellency to end the bloodletting, kidnapping and general insecurity in all the geo-political zones of the country.
“I believe that government can do more to secure the lives and property given all the modern technology within its reach.”
He also assured that the apex Christian organisation would continue to participate actively and effectively in nation building.
Pan-African social agency, Crtve DEVELOPMENT (CD), launched the WE!ARE movement to build a pan-African voice on climate justice ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 27).
Crtve DEVELOPMENT (CD) champions change on the African continent through storytelling and campaigning on key issues. They harness the power of art, technology, journalism, and research to advocate for African-owned and-led development that bridges the gap between people and policies.
There has never been a better opportunity for the continent to make its voice heard in the climate debate than with COP 27, which is set to take place in Egypt in November 2022.
Africa is the continent most severely affected by global climate issues even though it makes the least contribution to climate change. If proper reaction mechanisms are not put in place, up to 118 million impoverished people in Africa are expected to be exposed to droughts, floods, and high heat by 2030, according to Josefa Sacko, the AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture. The greatest threat will be to those who have the least ability to withstand and adapt to the effects of climate change.
Climate justice is still one of the least understood and socialized policy concerns in modern African development, despite the severe effects of climate change on human rights and social justice.
Dr. Okito Wedi, Founder and CEO of Crtve DEVELOPMENT, stated: “Through the WE!ARE campaign, we want to harness the power of art and creativity to change the narrative on climate change and development in Africa and bridge the gap between communities who will most be affected and policymakers who will determine our climate future.”
The WE!ARE movement aims to empower young people across the continent to use creative outlets to express their demands for climate justice and the Africa they want to see.
Crtve DEVELOPMENT, in collaboration with Africa No Filter, issued a call-out for creative involvement in WE!ARE displays that will resemble climate justice in the framework of “The Africa We Want To See” in order to emphasize the significance of climate justice in Africa.
Creative Hubs in participating nations were also invited to apply for grants to create pop-up displays and creative installations, as well as to carry out three workshops that will use art and creativity as a tool for social change in local communities. Five hubs were selected and they are supported with in-person training and a grant of $10,000 to curate a pop-up showcase that will facilitate public engagement and participation ahead of COP 27.
Daai Deng, aims to highlight the blessing and “curse” of water using art and creativity to dissect and interrogate climate justice within a South African context. The hub’s founder Allison-Claire Hoskins explained that the showcase theme: Water No Get Enemy is “inspired by the great Fela Kuti song.” With water and sanitation listed in the sustainable development goals, the showcase will feature sites in South Africa that have been affected by flooding and water shortages, including Bishop Lavis, Khayelitsha and Durban.
Because of Nigeria’s large youth population, two hubs, The Assembly and Footprints of David Arts Foundation were selected.
The Assembly, founded by Yoanna Chikezie, is an open innovation organisation dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs and creatives from Africa and its diaspora to succeed in the global fashion industry. The pop-up concept is a futuristic scenario of a climate-battered and hyper-modern Lagos in the year 2050. Both pop-ups within the showcase will feature a startup collective made up of five homegrown heritage and digital fashion brands. The brands specialize in creating innovatively designed garments with ancestral Nigerian textiles – Aṣọ Òkè, Àdìre and Rafia, 3D garments, textiles, models, and environments with technological innovations and recycled plastic fashion accessories. Drawing from the past and leveraging the present to influence the future, The Assembly will curate a travelling ‘phy-gital’ showcase staged in at the Ikeja City Mall and Dustbin Estate in Ajegunle, Lagos.
The second Nigerian hub Footprints of David Arts Foundation was founded in 2005 by Seun Awobajo. The hub is an all-inclusive theatre and community development project in the Bariga community. Their showcase will feature a creative hub for rural and slum dwellers. It will include a live and digital photo exhibition in public spaces in Lagos, community performances in public areas and reusable art installations such as Christmas trees with waste PET bottles.
Egypt’s Perform Arts provides a training and educational service for performance arts. Their showcase will focus on Alexandria Sea pollution and shoreline disappearance, consisting of a photography exhibition in Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, Egypt. Music and singing will be integrated with storytelling to introduce the environmental impact on human life.
Mozambique’s Tamba Africa Social Circus is a creative advocacy and inclusive arts organisation using African storytelling, circus social pedagogy, transformative theatre and intangible cultural heritage to address social issues. Through a Caravan tour, the Circus will highlight the loss and damage that marginalised communities continue to experience due to climate change to bring the world’s attention to the impact of climate-induced disasters on poor and marginalised communities. Significantly, the Caravan will tour the three places in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique that have been heavily hit by Cyclones in southern Africa over the past five years.
In preparation for the showcases, which will kick off in September 2022, all creative hubs will attend online and in-person training workshops to equip them with practical advice on climate-related policy education, community participation, and media skills development.
The WE!ARE campaign runs from Earth Day 2022 – Earth Day 2023. In order to promote a high-level display and pledge between African youth and the attending policymakers, WE!ARE aspires to participate in the curating of the first-ever COP Youth Lounge in the Blue Zone. Policymakers will receive the Africa We Want to See publication, which contains the demands for climate justice made by 2000 WE!ARE African climate activists. Delegates will also see a showreel of the seminars, showcases, and Sail-to-Sharm project.
In Africa, the movement is supported by both up-and-coming and seasoned artists, politicians, designers, musicians, and community organizers. Together, the WE!ARE movement’s champions and backers will reshape the narrative surrounding climate justice and put pressing political concerns at the forefront for their various communities and countries in the run-up to COP27 and beyond.
The WE!ARE movement is giving young Africans an opportunity to speak their minds, lead the conversation, and share their solutions on their terms. To get involved, visit www.africabywe.org or join the conversation on social media platforms using the hashtag #AfricaByWe.
Renaissance was officially released on Friday and it features dance-ready tunes, experimental sounds, and very sexy lyrics.
Beyoncé’s rebirth sees her in the role of a siren drawing us to the dance floor.
She was never going to release a cheesy “live, laugh, love” record.
Break My Soul, the album’s lead track, was a raucous and joyful example of a 90s diva house, and it pointed to one thing. Beyoncé was going to give us something fresh like we had never heard of before.
Renaissance, for the most part, goes beyond sounds we have heard before and into far more varied, daring territory – a perfect soundtrack for a wild summer.
The album’s name could initially seem to represent a revival of Beyoncé herself, but the truth is that she has never been out of style. Her music is experiencing a disco and house resurrection, much like the current cultural resurgence of OG house music, which was most recently heard in Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind.
Beyoncé’s choice of musical snapshots in time translates perfectly and honors each of the influences under one big roof. Her credits span the last 40 years of the industry, from Nile Rogers’ writing on the disco-groovy “CUFF IT” to Skrillex’s production on “ENERGY” to features from Big Freedia on “BREAK MY SOUL” and Grace Jones on “MOVE.”
The infusion of afrobeats in this album is also phenomenal.
Whose voice has permeated 2022 more than Tems? The Nigerian artist got a feature on the song “MOVE”. A celebration of feminine energy, the chorus goes: “Move out the way, I’m with my girls and we all need space / When the queen’s come through don’t try like the rest say / Move out the way, how many times have I said? / It’s a home run when the team turns this.”
After all this time spent cooped up, these are songs to dance to; they make you want to move.
This is an album that sneaks up on you and then suddenly slaps you in the face (in a good way, of course).
The beats are quick, the bass is strong, and occasionally Bey even shouts the lyrics in your face, giving the song a genuine sense of urgency. It appeared as though the music was exploding from her. But later, in classic Queen B fashion, she slips in gospel, soul, and disco themes. You are continuously left in suspense and definitely want more.
Honestly, I did miss the power ballads and the seductively sluggish R&B beats.
Does it contain an “Irreplaceable”? No. However, a few of the songs bring back memories of the past but with a more seasoned and assured outlook on the present.
So, despite the fact that this isn’t the type of music you might anticipate hearing from Beyoncé, her constant message of empowerment is still present and this album will make you feel nice as you listen to it.
The Federal Government intends to apply a 5% inclusive excise charge on telecommunications services in Nigeria, raising the tax on telecommunications services to 12.5%.
The Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced this at a stakeholders’ forum on the implementation of excise duty on telecommunications services in Nigeria, held on Thursday in Abuja.
At the event organized by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Ahmed, who was represented by the Ministry’s Assistant Chief Officer, Mr. Frank Oshanipin, said the 5% excise charge was in the Finance Act: 2020 but had not been enacted.
Observations from the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning
According to Ahmed, the government’s interaction with stakeholders caused the delay in its implementation.
She said, “Payments are to be made on monthly basis, on or before 21st of every month.
“The duty rate was not captured in the Act because it is the responsibility of the President to fix rate on excise duties and he has fixed five per cent for telecommunication services which include GSM.
“It is public knowledge that our revenue cannot run our financial obligations, so we are to shift our attention to non-oil revenue.
“The responsibility of generating revenue to run government lies with us all.’’
Telecoms customers will suffer the brunt of a new levy when providers raise their prices
The additional 5% tax will be passed on to telecoms customers, according to Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Owners of Nigeria (ALTON).
He said, “It means that subscribers will now pay 12.5 per cent tax on telecom services, we will not be able to subsidise the five per cent excise duty on telecom services.
“This is as a result of the 39 multiple taxes we already paying coupled with the epileptic power situation as we spend so much on diesel.’’
The 5 percent excise charge, according to ALTON’s executive secretary Mr. Gbolahan Awonuga, is not good for the sector because telecom service providers already pay the NCC 2 percent of their annual revenue. He said, “We pay two per cent excise duty to NCC from our revenue, 7.5 per cent VAT and other 39 taxes. We are going to pass it to the subscribers because we cannot subsidise it.’’
Here are the key points you should note
Remember that President Muhammadu Buhari authorised the collection of 5% as an excise levy on telephone recharge cards and vouchers? That was reported earlier in May.
The fee is a new addition to the country’s list of commodities subject to excise duty in the Finance Act.
Excise duty is a tax imposed during the production process. It is also a type of indirect tax on the purchase or use of specific items, services, products, or activities like gambling, alcohol, narcotics, tobacco, and so forth, primarily to deter their use and consumption. The list has been expanded to include beverages, non-alcoholic drinks, etc. under Nigeria’s Finance Act.
The Federal Government is reportedly expecting to raise at least N150 billion from the duty as the collection was one of the new provisions in the President Buhari-signed 2020 Finance Act.
