Continuous voters registration exercise is closing tomorrow

The start of today marks exactly, 48 hours to the close of the continuous voters registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the 2023 elections.

The Federal High Court’s decision to deny a lawsuit brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) requesting an extension of the exercise on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, prompted the Commission to decide to halt this exercise.

Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said in an earlier statement that all legal obstacles to the CVR have been eliminated as a result of the Federal High Court’s ruling.

Click here to find the nearest registration point close to you. And remember, registration starts at 9.00 am and closes at 5.00 pm prompt including weekends.

Nollywood veterans Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel are missing

Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel, aka Agbogidi, two well-known Nollywood actors and AGN members, have apparently been kidnapped.

Monalisa Chinda, the Actors Guild of Nigeria’s director of communications, revealed this to reporters on Friday.

According to Chinda’s statement, the actors were reported missing after their family members confirmed they had not returned from a film site in Ozalla Town, Enugu state.

“The two members were suspected of having been kidnapped, which has increased fear amongst members about the safety of actors filming in the country.

“Because of this sad development, the National President of the Guild, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has instructed all Actors to avoid going to the outskirt of cities to film except full security cover is provided to ensure their safety,” the statement read.

Mr. Rollas also expressed disbelief while pleading with the security services to expedite their rescue efforts.

He also urged every member to pray for the actors’ safe return.

Innoson is suing the Imo Government for a debt of N2.5 billion

Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing (IVM), a locally owned automaker in Nigeria, has launched a lawsuit against the Imo State Government for failing to pay or service a N2.5 billion debt.

The sum represented the purchase price for the numerous IVM vehicles, as well as their parts, which IVM produced, sold, and delivered to the State Government. However, despite repeated requests and pleas, the State Government is yet to make the payment.

The lawsuit was filed by Prof. Joseph N. Mbadugha, SAN, FCPA of McCarthy Mbadugha & Co, the counsel to Innoson Vehicles, in response to repeated requests made by the chairman of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, to the governor urging him to pay the company on the vehicles sold, and delivered to the State Government, according to a statement released by the company’s Corporate Communications Head, Cornel Osigwe.

Carting of IVEDs by criminals has been refuted by INEC

The Independent Electoral Commission, or INEC, refuted allegations that thieves stole INEC Voter Enrollment Devices, or IVEDs, in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, the resident electoral commissioner for INEC in Lagos, stated in a statement: “The false video posted by one Amb. Princess Okogie Idimudia alleging that Hoodlums invaded one St. Bridgette Catholic Church, Surulere Lagos State carried away registration machines meant to registration of voters at the Church on July 29, 2022, was a needless distraction.

”The office has investigated and found that it is not true as no INEC Voter Enrollment Devices machine was deployed to the said Church on July 29, 2022.

”For avoidance of doubt, the Commission does not use worship centers premises for registration and all the IEVDs deployed to different continuous Voters Registration Centres across Lagos State are all intact and are still being used at the time of issuing the statement”.

The commission urged Nigerians to ignore the fake video as INEC is working to register eligible voters by the said closing date of July 31, 2022.

CBN is Blaming NNPC, Two Others, As Dollar Sells For N718

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has attributed the current dollar shortage and naira devaluation to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

The remark was issued by Nigeria’s financial watchdog on Friday, following the dollar’s crossing of the N700 threshold on the black market for foreign exchange.

As the Bureau De Change operators raised their asking price in the black market for the sale of the US currency from N707 it traded for on Wednesday, the naira decreased to N718 per $1 on Thursday.

Because the central bank won’t trade foreign currency due to alleged financial irregularities, the demand for dollars has raised pressure on the naira in the black market.

In a recent response to the naira’s devaluation, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said that the NNPC and its subsidiaries had stopped sending dollars to Nigeria’s foreign reserves, which had led to a lack of foreign exchange.

The CBN stated that the NNPC remittance from crude oil accounts for more than 80% of Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange (forex) revenues in a release titled, “The forex question in Nigeria: Fact sheet.”

The CBN can’t control the naira purely through its monetary policies, and it doesn’t produce foreign currencies, therefore the non-remittance by the NNPC and its subsidiaries severely restricts the amount of foreign currency that is available in the foreign reserves, according to the apex bank.

Emirates will reduce operations in Nigeria after being unable to repatriate $85 million

$

Due to its failure to repatriate around $85 million in income, Emirates Airlines has announced that it would scale back its flying operations to Nigeria.

This information was provided by the airline in a letter to Hadi Sirika, the aviation minister.

Sheik Majid Al Mualla, divisional senior vice-president (DSVP), international relations for Emirates airline, signed the letter, which was dated July 22.

Emirates said that its activities in Nigeria would be scaled back beginning on August 15.

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport’s flight schedule would also change from 11 to 7 flights weekly (MMIA).

The letter said that there was nothing further that could be done to stop the losses that Emirates was still suffering as a result of the money being frozen in Nigeria.

“As of July 2022, Emirates has US$ 85 million of funds awaiting repatriation from Nigeria. This figure has been rising by more than $US 10 million every month, as the ongoing operational costs of our 11 weekly flights to Lagos and 5 to Abuja continue to accumulate.

“We simply cannot continue to operate at the current level in the face of mounting losses, especially in the challenging post-COVID-19 climate.

“Emirates did try to stem the losses by proposing to pay for fuel in Nigeria in Nairas, which would have at least reduced one element of our ongoing costs, however, this request was denied by the supplier.

“This means that not only are Emirates’ revenues accumulating, we also have to send hard currency into Nigeria to sustain our own operation. Meanwhile, our revenues are out of reach, and not even earning credit interest.

“Your Excellency, this is not a decision we have taken lightly. Indeed, we have made every effort to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find a solution to this issue. Our Senior Vice-President met with the Deputy Governor of the CBN in May and followed up on the meeting by letter to the Governor himself the following month, however no positive response was received.

“Meetings were also held with Emirates’ own bank in Nigeria and in collaboration with IATA to discuss improving FX allocation, but with limited success. Despite our considerable efforts, the situation continues to deteriorate. We are now in the unfortunate position of having to cut flights, to mitigate against further losses going forward.”

“We are confident that your valuable involvement would make a real difference in improving this very difficult situation. Should there be any positive development in the coming days, we will, of course, re-evaluate this decision.”

Chomzy was quite the free spirit as she waltzed from Giddyfia to Hermes to other roommates who made approaches to relax with her. She was wearing a bright peach bikini.

  • Nigeria wins first gold medal at Commonwealth Games
  • IGP threatens arrest of skit, filmmakers over unauthorised use of police uniform, kits
  • We’re prepared for terrorists’ attack on Lagos – PPRO
  • Anambra man kills brother’s wife over property
  • 16 bandits, 2 others killed in Plateau

Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, these are the five top Nigerian news stories you shouldnt miss:

Nigeria wins first gold medal at Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria is off to a terrific start after claiming its first gold at the current Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday.

Adijat Olarinoye, who won gold in the women’s 55kg weightlifting, set a new Commonwealth Games record.

She lifted 203 kg in total, a games record, including 92 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk.

While England’s Fraer settled for the bronze, India’s Sorokhaniban lfter took the silver.

Following the failure of the other Nigerian lifters to place, Olarinoye’s victory sent Team Nigeria’s camp into raptures.

Many people are still hopeful that more medals will be won after Saturday’s gold.

One of these chances is in the men’s light middleweight division of the boxing match, where Nigeria’s Abdul-Afeez Osoba on Saturday knocked out his Bahamian opponent, Carl Hield (Red), to advance to the Round of 16 comfortably.

IGP threatens arrest of skit, filmmakers over unauthorised use of police uniform, kits

Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, has declared it unlawful for film and skit producers to use police uniforms, kits, and other accessories.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the force’s public relations officer, announced this in a statement on Sunday.

Mr. Adejobi, who voiced concerns about how the police are portrayed in various entertainment materials, stated that it is illegal and punishable to wear a police uniform without authorization under Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code.

He said the IGP has given an order to police officers “to arrest and immediately prosecute, in accordance with the law, all persons or group of persons engaging in the illegal sales of police uniforms and accouterments within their jurisdictions”.

He added that “film or skit makers who portray the Nigeria Police Force officers in a bad light, without applying for, and being duly issued a permit letter for such portrayals, should desist with immediate effect or face the full wrath of the law.”

The police have issued the warning in light of comedians’ use of police uniforms in their content, notably on social media.

Popular comedians such as Broda Shaggi, Officer Woos, William Uchemba, Aki, and Paw Paw have all worn police uniforms on a regular basis.

We’re prepared for terrorists’ attack on Lagos – PPRO

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the Lagos State Police, has said that the police and other security organizations are ready for any planned terrorist attack on Lagos.

In response to inquiries on rumors of a potential terrorist assault planned for Lagos and the readiness of the police, Hundeyin stated during a Twitter Space webinar on Saturday that the police were also receiving intelligence reports.

Nigerians are concerned about the protection of their lives, the lives of their loved ones, and the safety of their property because of the frequent attacks that take place throughout the nation.

In response to this, Hundeyin remarked, “We are working seriously with other security agencies. Many times that I am with the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, the Department of State Services keeps sending intelligence reports to us.”

He pointed out that in order to prevent any attacks, the police were not acting alone but rather in concert with other security forces.

“All resources are available, from human resources to gadgets. Our equipment has been optimally deployed to ensure that we don’t have any attacks in Lagos,” the police spokesman said.

“The people also have a role to play by reporting suspicious movements to security agencies. It’s a collective thing.

“On our part, we are not just ignoring it, we are on alert,” he said.

Anambra man kills brother’s wife over property

Tension is mounting in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the killing of a 40-year-old Nkiru Okoye.

It was gathered that the deceased, the wife of a mechanical engineer, Emenike Okoye, was beaten to death by her brother-in-law, George Okoye, over the ownership of some disputed landed property.

Emenike Okoye’s elder brother is George Okoye.

The victim’s home was allegedly raided by the suspect, who is currently in police prison, together with several of the victim’s close relatives, who then attacked Emenike and his wife.

The occurrence took place on July 19, 2022.

Emenike, who spoke on Sunday from a hospital bed, described the incident that resulted in his wife’s death.

He said that on July 19, as his late wife (Nkiru) was getting ready to leave for a gathering of Umuada (daughters of her kindred in Abba), his older brother (George) brought his wife (Uzonna) and their three children to his house and attacked him and his wife without provocation.

“They dragged my wife outside the house, hit and killed her with an axe and chair. She fell and died. When I resisted their move to drag me outside too, they broke my hand with an axe, dragged me outside, and started hitting me with the axe all over my body until I passed out. You can see the cut on my eyes.

“They left me thinking that I was also dead. But miraculously, I escaped death as some members of our local vigilante group who arrived on the scene drove me to hospital,” he said.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the state police, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the suspect had been detained and that an investigation had started.

16 bandits, 2 others killed in Plateau

At least 16 suspected bandits and two community members died when some vigilantes confronted suspected bandits during a skirmish in Bangalala community in the Wase local government area of Plateau State.

Umar Danladi, a resident, claimed that the vigilantes had to confront the bandits who had recently been harassing numerous towns in the region.

The resident said that immediate action was required to assist the security personnel in containing the area’s insecurity level.

A member of the security staff who wished to remain unnamed stated, “The security would have to verify the claim because the residents of the community did not notify any security agencies of the development. The DPO in Wase was unaware of it, and neither was the Operation Safe Haven stationed at Pinau.

#BBNaijaS7 Weekend Recap: Crazy Things are Happening

$
0
0

It’s only been a week and crazy things have been happening on Big Brother Naija, the Level up edition. This weekend was not any different as the housemates in both Levels one and two served us premium content.

Let’s start with the pool party hosted by the level one housemates

The housemates behaved as one might anticipate, letting their hair down and having fun while getting along with one another. They danced, drank, and played games.

Despite the fact that it was the middle of the night, everyone brought the heat, with some wearing sun shades as proof. Provocative dance moves are one thing that Africa is well known for, and twerking, of course, is still popular. It was a true battle of the nyansh, and the men couldn’t help but want to approach the women because, well, who wouldn’t?

The Level 2 housemates were not left out of the fun. They decided to entertain themselves with a game of truth or dare where housemates Beauty and Groovy were dared to kiss each other, which they eventually did.

A very wild Night Party

The Level Up Housemates were prepared to wreck the dance floor with their moves when the clock struck 22:00 WAT on Saturday.

Biggie did not let us down when he gave the order for each level to enter the party room and get down, and boy did they serve some moves.

Big Brother Naija Saturday night parties are known for bringing out the fun in most housemates, and Saturday wasn’t any different. The housemates grooved to the sounds and rhythm of DJ Smallz and DJ 4Kerty.

After swiftly mingling and exchanging cool pleasantries, the housemates from each level gathered and danced the night away with various partners.

There was more to the evening than just dancing; there were also lots of passionate kisses and flirting.

As their friends danced the night away, Eloswag and Phyna were overtly flirting.

Additionally, Dotun was seen conversing with Beauty outside the party area.

Doyin and Cyph had a very passionate kiss at the end of the night, which astounded the audience and ignited social media.

Remember that Cyph and Doyin previously engaged in naughty behavior earlier in the party, including choking and passionate dancing.

Their mutual affection for one another was confirmed by the kiss, and I’m sure the shippers and boat captains are eager to watch how this plays out.

Party after the party

The party finished with the Level 2 housemates saying their goodbyes to their Level 1 counterparts, who were told to go into their level and close the doors behind them.

When the doors were shut, the Level 2 women screamed their praise for the Level 1 men.

Eloswag was clearly the target of Phyna’s darts when she made reference to kissing him.

However, Beauty was upset with Groovy’s behavior at the party because she thought he was disrespectful in the manner in which he danced with the women from Level 1.

She made a warning that she would leave Groovy and that everyone would be startled when she did, while she and Ilebaye were in the bathroom.

Later, she challenged Groovy, saying she was careful about how she danced with the Level 1 guys, and she demanded to know why he wasn’t.

She criticized his manner as being disrespectful and said that he was confusing her. All of this was refuted by Groovy, who assured Beauty that he was thinking only of her.

The Level 2 housemates appear to have left an impression on Chichi and Chomzy as well because they said they had a wonderful vibe about them.

Chichi accused the Level 1 guys of failing to see how excellent the Level 2 guys were in reaction to Adekunle and Dotun.

Dotun responded to her remark that the Level 1 boys were insecure by claiming that the Level 2 guys were truly intimidated by them and that he could read such things.

A Strike already?

The housemates have shown us so far that it’s not too early to start catching feelings and shooting shots. They have also gone a step further to show us that it’s also not too early to get a strike.

Beauty became upset when she saw Groovy dance at the Saturday party with Chomzy, a Level 1 housemate.

Ilebaye, one of her closest friends in the house, attempted to talk to her about the situation, which sparked a confrontation.

While the two were fighting, Beauty approached Ilebaye and said, “I’ll come to your face like this, but I won’t touch you.”

Speaking to Beauty, Biggie said, “Beauty, while the both of you overstepped your boundaries, you took it a little further when you charged at Ilebaye and proceeded to physically remove items from her body in what could be seen as a violent manner.”

He then issued Beauty a strike while Ilebaye received a stern warning.

The rest of the housemates were also warned to avoid hesitating whenever they were being called upon by Big Brother.

Que the Fake Housemates

Two more housemates were on Sunday introduced into the Level 1 and 2 houses of the show.

While the housemates were expecting some of their co-housemates to be evicted, they were shocked to receive an addition.

One of the new housemates, Deji, revealed that he was in a complicated relationship and noted that his physical attributes would endear him to fellow housemates and fans.

He didn’t lie about the fans’ part because social media has been going crazy about him.

Deji joined the Level 1 housemates.

Another housemate, Modella, was introduced to the show as the 26th housemate, and she joined the Level 2 housemates.

So here’s the twist. Modella and Deji are fake housemates, but the 24 original housemates are unaware of this fact.

Deji and Modella will keep the real housemates on their toes as fake housemates. In addition to adding more game-changing shocks, the upcoming days might shed more light on their roles.

Are Nigerians just finding out about “Kito”?

$

0

The Nasarawa State Police Command has nabbed six members of a robbery ring who attract victims through a well-known gay dating app.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspects criminally plotted together and used a popular gay dating app to set up dates with unsuspecting people from all over the country, luring them to their hideout, holding them hostage, and taking their possessions while threatening them with lethal weapons.

The victims are also assaulted and made to divulge their ATM pins. Their bank accounts are subsequently wiped out before they are released.

Many Nigerians have expressed shock and surprise in their response to this news. This incident, however, is a normal occurrence within the Nigerian LGBTQ community.

It also has a name – KITO.

What is Kito?

Kito is when a gay man or woman is lured by someone who claims to be gay, only to be outed, assaulted, robbed, and, in some extreme cases, arrested or killed by a mob.

Catfishing, or using false profiles to defraud people, is a widespread social engineering technique, especially when it includes dating websites or apps.

However, these assaults can be especially damaging for victims who are sexual minorities in nations that stigmatize gay relationships, lack legislation protecting queer people from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, or even criminalize homosexuality, as is the case in Nigeria.

It is a very traumatic experience for anyone who has fallen victim to this act. The aftermath of such an experience comes with a great psychological, mental, physical, emotional, and even spiritual toll.

According to research, 15% of gay men who have been kitoed commit suicide, 40% of them live in permanent depression, and the remaining 45% genuinely don’t care because they refuse to let such things bind them.

Kitoing and similar events in other countries also draw attention to the increased risks LGBTQ individuals face online on a daily basis, particularly since the internet may be one of the few places they can access community.

However, some LGBTQ Nigerians have also harnessed the power of the internet to establish online forums for denouncing rogue actors, including developing digital journals like The Kito Diaries to alert others to alleged insider dangers.

How does Kito work?

The routine is quite straightforward. Often, it begins with meeting the person on a hookup app (they are everywhere; examples include Grindr, Tinder, Badoo, and even Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter).

From there, it progressively transitions to Whatsapp. They present themselves as being enamored with their victims, and it could take years before they finally ask to meet.

After a lengthy or brief wait, both parties decide to meet up, and the perpetrators either provide the unsuspecting victims with a venue or let them find their own; it doesn’t really matter to them whether it’s at the victim’s home or theirs, because their agenda is what matters.

The meetup is the final stage, and it is at this point that they rob, brutalize, and, in extreme cases, kill their victims.

Some are lucky to have a one-off experience. Others are blackmailed for years with the threat of outing if they do not comply with financial demands.

The Kito Network is a grossly overlooked organized criminal organisation

The fact that Kitos collaborate with others is not unusual; many of them have been known to build networks where they share information about vulnerable LGBTQ persons to target as well as knowledge about hidden queer events and popular spots.

It is interesting to note that in some cases, the accomplices and even the actual perpetuators of these acts are queer themselves.

Uncertainty persists as to the extent of these networks and links. According to testimonies on Kito diaries, however, kitos have a history of forging close relationships across state lines and sharing information about LGBT individuals with other kitos, who subsequently use it against their victims.

There have been cases where Kitos will intensify their efforts to exact revenge on an individual who may have resisted an extortion attempt and managed to flee.

The existence of this criminal network poses a major security risk to the LGBTQ community in Nigeria. One minute you could be on the best date of your life and the next you are being threatened as you divulge all your bank details so you don’t get killed.

The violence and prejudice that many members of the LGBT community in Nigeria experience because of their sexual orientation and gender identity may seem like old news, but the fear and injustice that go along with it continues to grow stronger every day.

According to the most recent Human Rights Violation Reports from The Initiative For Human Rights (Tiers), there were 831 violations in 2021. According to the report, these crimes were committed “Based On Real Or Perceived Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity In Nigeria.” Additionally, these were only reported cases. This was a big jump from the 397 reported in 2019.

The Okada Ban: They may not be the safest or the most reliable, but they are important to everyday Nigerians

On July 22, the Federal Government said, through the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, that it was proposing a ban on commercial motorbike and mining activities as part of its strategy to combat insecurity.

Residents and motorcyclists in Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Abaji Area Councils of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, expressed concern that the Okada ban would worsen security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) if it wasn’t properly planned.

Many operators will lose their jobs, and others might even be recruited by terrorists and robbers to do even more destruction, especially in the satellite towns, according to the residents.

According to NAN, the restriction on Okada operations, which began in some areas of Lagos, caused a spike in transportation prices, a scenario that some stakeholders said could impair the city’s residents’ standard of living.

Many commuters now have a choice between taking commercial buses, whose prices have more than doubled, or waiting in long lines at Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) loading stations as a result of the prohibition.

Reactions to the Okada ban by Abuja residents

  • Mr. Abraham Gado, a resident of Kuje Area Council, lamented the existing high rate of youth unemployment in the nation and said that the prohibition would cause the labor market to become even more unemployed. Gado suggested that rather than outlawing okada operations, the bandits and other criminal elements in the nation should be dealt with properly in order to save lives and property.
  • Mrs. Laraba Jigo, a resident of Abaji Area Council, said the development would worsen the traffic situation as some people who ride bikes would now have to drive. According to her, the majority of the population suffers from abject poverty and do not have vehicles of their own. She believes the ban will make them vulnerable and miserable.
  • Samuel Danjuma, another Gwagwalada Area Council resident, claimed that in addition to making it harder for the poorer residents to get around, the decision would also lead to an increase in violence in some neighborhoods. He argued that transportation “is a vital aspect of human activity and it consumes a major percentage of one’s income.”
  • Additionally, some commercial motorcycle riders in the FCT’s Bwari Area Council claimed that a nationwide ban on motorcycle use would not only harm businesses but may also put more people through hardship.
  • According to Mr. Iliya Mohammed, the Chairman of the Kaduna-Kafanchan Transport Services Union in Bwari, the restriction could end up hurting more people than it helps. He claims that terrorists and outlaws who disturb the calm of the nation can utilize motorcycles in the jungles where they typically camp without being caught.

Malam Muhammad Bello, the FCT Minister, however, reaffirmed the earlier ban on Okada and restrictions on “Keke NAPEP” operations in the FCT that had been imposed by his administration.

The Federal Capital City (FCC), including the Kubwa and Airport expressways, has a complete ban on the use of motorbikes, or “okadas,” per the minister’s executive order, while Keke NAPEP tricycles are only permitted in residential areas.

  • ASUU extends strike by four weeks
  • Lagos moves to remove illegal structures
  • Taraba and Plateau bandits kill 10
  • SSS reportedly arrests Boko Haram leader in Ogun
  • JAMB clarifies cut-off mark for admission to Nigerian universities

Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, these are the five top Nigerian news stories you shouldnt miss:

ASUU extends strike by four weeks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has extended its current strike by four weeks.

In a statement released yesterday, the union’s president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the decision was made to give the government adequate time to resolve any outstanding issues with the lecturers.

The ASUU President stated that the extension will take effect on August 1 with immediate effect after noting that the body had communicated an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the union at the University of Abuja on Sunday.

However, the Federal Government made no comment when ASUU extended their strike for an additional four weeks.

Parents have called for a speedy conclusion to the conflict under the auspices of the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN).

Lagos moves to remove illegal structures

The Lagos State Government has stated that it will no longer accept developers who build projects that are against state standards abusing and misusing setbacks and incidental open areas.

This was said to have occurred during an inspection and monitoring of setbacks and incidental open spaces in the Abule-Egba/Agbado Oke-Odo axis of the state on Sunday by Daisi Oso, the general manager of the Lagos State Planning and Environment Monitoring Agency.

He said, “The exercise was undertaken to curb illegal activities, abuse of setbacks, and incidental open spaces around Agbado Oke-Odo and its environs because all the structures built under the power transmission lines did not get approval from the state government.

“Illegal activities on setbacks and incidental open spaces will no longer be tolerated since their owners and developers contravened stipulated rules, regulations, and guidelines of the agency; they will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Oso further revealed that LASPEMA had issued violation notifications to persons who had broken the rules of open areas.

Taraba and Plateau bandits kill 10

In a raid on Joro Manu village on Sunday in Taraba State’s Gassol Local Government Area, bandits killed three persons and kidnapped six others.

Numerous gunmen believed to be herdsmen also killed seven people in the Jos South LGA of Plateau State.

Residents of Joro Manu Village claim that about 2pm, assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on anyone in their line of sight.

Umar Saidu and Abdullahi Mohammed, two locals, disclosed that inhabitants were evacuating the neighborhood out of concern for their safety.

The incident was confirmed by DSP Gambo Kwache, the interim public relations officer for the Taraba State Police.

The police spokesperson said, “We are on top of the situation. We have made a deployment to the area to track down the attackers.”

SSS reportedly arrests Boko Haram leader in Ogun

A Boko Haram leader has reportedly been detained by State Security Service (SSS) agents in Ogun State.

The suspect was taken into custody by the SSS on Saturday in Abeokuta after he allegedly pretended to be a security guard.

Residents became alarmed after Rock City 109.1 FM in Abeokuta published the tale in one of its news bulletins.

There were earlier claims that the terrorist organization planned to strike various states in the South-west, including Ogun State.

Following intelligence information indicating that armed assailants were preparing an attack in the state, the Lagos police announced on Sunday that they had put officers on alert.

The SSS operatives arrested the suspect in the Ijaye area of Abeokuta at night, an official of the secret police said.

He said the suspected terrorist reportedly arrived in Abeokuta from Katsina, and took a up security job at Ijaye, while gathering intelligence for an attack.

He also said that the suspect moved to Abeokuta to set up a terrorist cell for kidnapping and terror attacks.

According to him, following an intelligence gathering, gun-wielding security operatives stormed his hideout and picked him up.

JAMB clarifies cut-off mark for admission to Nigerian universities

The recently announced 140 cut-off point for admissions to Nigerian universities has been made clear by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as not being the same for all institutions.

According to JAMB, a 140 on the UTME is just a minimal cutoff point for universities to consider when granting admission.

The board further stated that it had no involvement in deciding on the benchmark, noting that all of the nation’s tertiary institutions had come to that conclusion jointly.

JAMB’s head of public affairs and protocol, Fabian Benjamin, provided this clarification in response to a remark made by Nasir Fagge, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

During the interview, Mr. Fagge made the suggestion that JAMB, as an organization, chooses the standard minimum UTME points needed for admission.

Mr. Benjamin has clarified that all institutions have their individual cut-off points for admissions irrespective of the agreed cut-off points. However, no institution can go below the agreed cut-off point of 140.

#BBNaijaS7: Hermes will be a great Head of House and here’s why

$

0

Last night, Level one housemate, Hermes, won week two’s head of house games to the terror of many.

The title has earned him a week’s worth of immunity. It basically means that he can’t be up for eviction this week.

It’s important to note that Chichi and Dotun were also awarded the Tail of the House title.

Hermes gaining immunity as the game’s winner benefits both himself and the Level one house.

Additionally, he retains the exclusive authority to propose five level two housemates for possible eviction this weekend.

There have been some interesting reactions to Hermes becoming Head of House.

It’s no news that the dancer is quite eccentric and not very conventional. His polyamorous relationship already points to that.

However, Hermes is quite creative and he strives for excellence. In our Nigerian society, the demand for diligence and excellence is most often viewed as being overbearing. So the responses that implied that he would be a dictator with this new power were not unexpected.

Hermes is also very strategic, a team player, and a very committed member of the Level one house. He had the power to evict housemates from Level 2, and he could have made the decision alone, but he consulted with his fellow housemates.

Hermes picked Cyph, Phyna, Amaka, Khalid, and Christy O for potential evictions.

Hermes also explained his decision to nominate the five housemates to Biggie by stating that they pose the biggest threat to his Level one housemates since they are the strongest, most self-assured, and outspoken about their opinions.

Hermes said, “It was a difficult decision for me to choose Khalid, but I had to put my team first in my decision-making.”

Right there is a team player.

Housemates also seem to find Hermes interesting.

Does he have some very weird moments? Yes. Yes, he does.

We are counting on those moments to spark some interesting events in the house this week.

Will there be pushback from ‘morally upright’ housemates as regards certain decisions he will make?

Will there be new alliances formed by reason of his win?

Is there anything new we are yet to see from him and the flavor he brings to the show?

This week, from the looks of things, is set to be a very entertaining one and we are definitely here for all of it.

Between January 1 and July 29, 2022, there were 2,840 incidents of insecurity in Nigeria, resulting in at least 7,222 deaths and 3,823 abductions.

Additionally, 1,499 individuals were hurt as a result of the numerous attacks that occurred across 505 local government areas in the nation.

These were found in data provided by Beacon Consulting from the Nigeria Security Incidents Tracker.

The breakdown according to months

  • In January, there were 605 reported abductions; 1,202 people died and 62 were injured.

  • Additionally, 633 people were abducted in April, 1,434 people died, and 358 people were wounded.
  • 913 people died, 265 were kidnapped, and 315 were injured nationwide in May.
  • June had 785 fatalities, 676 kidnappings, and 160 injuries.
  • As of July 29, 441 Nigerians had been kidnapped, 504 had been slain, and 308 had been hurt.

  • In the North East, 2,052 people were killed in 777 incidents, while 344 people were kidnapped.

  • In the South-South, 278 incidents have so far been reported. 386 people were killed and 195 were abducted.

The breakdown according to states

  • Borno has the highest rate of insecurity in the nation, with a total of 527 incidents that resulted in 1,746 fatalities and 246 kidnappings.
  • With 216 incidents spread across 22 local government areas, Kaduna State has the second-highest number of security incidents in the nation. 1,137 individuals were abducted, and 790 people were killed.
  • 110 incidents were reported in 13 local government areas in Zamfara. 356 people were abducted, and 797 were killed.

The impact of insecurity on the economy of Nigeria

Rising violence in the nation has cost Nigeria N119 billion, or 11% of its GDP, according to BusinessDay. Similarly, data from TownTalk solutions shows that projects worth N12 trillion were abandoned across Nigeria as a result of insecurity and other issues.

According to the global terrorism index, as of 2020, the Nigerian economy had lost about $40.6 billion in foreign investments as a result of insecurity.

The loss of purchasing power had an impact on economic growth and employment creation. With an estimated 91 million people living in extreme poverty, the number is expected to rise to 106.6 million by 2030, making Nigeria the country with the highest concentration of poverty in the world.

People were also compelled to relocate to safer areas both inside and beyond the nation as major regions and states in the nation became the focal point for activities that threatened peace and security. As a result, cities like Abuja, Lagos, and other such locations are quickly becoming overpopulated with migrants.

Insecurity is also another factor in Nigeria’s inflation performance. Although data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated that inflation had been declining steadily since April of last year, this did not accurately reflect market conditions, as the cost of goods and food increased noticeably.

What can be done?

Governments must take the initiative to address security concerns and threats through the use of cutting-edge technology, preparedness, logistics, and intelligence collection and sharing techniques.

The corruption that has since crept into Nigeria’s socioeconomic, security, political, and educational institutions is, most crucially, the opposite of growth and development because it breeds political instability, social unrest, and an atmosphere that is rife with crime.

The government should thus, unequivocally, come up with effective solutions to solve this horrific conduct across all of its organs as it also develops inefficiency, incompetence, mediocrity, unethical ideals, and other negative tendencies in man like greed, malice, envy, avarice, and rapacity.

Good governance, however, is the overall solution to Nigeria’s problem with insecurity.

UK study applications peak as fresh academic year starts this September

With UK immigration personnels focused on managing refugee influx building up as a result of the war in Ukraine, there has been an increased backlog of travel applications from other countries especially for those intending to travel for academic purposes.

This situation has left prospective students from many countries including Nigeria stranded and not able to quickly process their travel requirements before the September school commencement as they normally should.

In a recent social media broadcast, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said, “In previous years it might have been okay to apply in August for a visa to start your studies in September, [but] this year that’s going to be much much too late.

“The reason for this is that UKVI, our visa and immigration processing system is under enormous pressure. You will all be aware of the horrible humanitarian situation in Ukraine, and we have had to priortise processing visas to people trying to get out of that horrible war zone. So, please help is to help you, to make sure you get to the UK in September for your studies.”

Education experts we spoke to are of the opinion that the rush by Nigerians is fueled by prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the upcoming 2023 general elections which is a leading cause of uncertainty for many citizens.

“The issues are a bit deeper than immediately apparent, but the main causative factors are Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, spiraling economy, and rising unemployment,” said Tosin Adebisi, UK education expert and Independent Consultant with boutique PR & Marketing firm, Vive Africa.

“According to our recently released Market Sentiment & Study Motivations Report, many Nigerians are very unsure about their future prospects in the country making it hard to ignore factors such as post-study visas and better employment opportunities that the UK has to offer.”

Nigerians who have the wherewithal to pursue foreign study opportunities are constantly seeking ways to expedite the processing time of their UK study applications so as to beat the commencement deadline for September higher education cycle.

“I am not surprised at the record numbers of applications this season. A peek into the number of people — usually in their tens of thousands — who attend regular influencer-anchored social media meet-ups organised by Vive Africa and their likes will give you a feel of the scale of interest and engagement we are talking about,” said Emeka Ndukwe, an education policy expert based in Abuja.

The UK government will most likely find ways with which to navigate itself and innovate around its current travel processing challenges before the next wave of prospective students hit their portals for the January 2023 intakes.

Terrorists Release Five More Abducted Kaduna Train Attack Victims

Terrorists have released five captives who were taken hostage on a train heading from Abuja to Kaduna on March 28.

Tukur Mamu, a member of the negotiation team, said that the victims were released on Tuesday, August 2. The security agencies and the Federal Government have not yet confirmed the development.

The names of the five victims were Professor Mustapha Umar Imam, a physician at Usman Dan Fodio University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, Akibu Lawal, Abubakar Ahmed Rufai Mukthar Shu’aibu, and Sidi Aminu Sharif.

Mamu, who claimed to have played a significant part in the release of the train victims, stated he withdrew due to threats to his life, lack of assistance from the Federal Government, and personal integrity.

27 victims have so far reclaimed their freedom. The five victims have since been freed, leaving 35 people who are still being held captive.

However, it is unclear if any cash was given to the terrorists in exchange for the release of their kidnapped victims.

On March 28, gunmen detonated a rail track, killing some and kidnapping dozens of passengers. This incident raised major questions about the safety of the nation’s trains.

The terrorists only just last week made a viral video in which they were shown flogging hostages. Additionally, they threatened to kidnap Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, and President Buhari.

A few hours later, the administration responded to the threat by accusing the rebels of employing propaganda to force the government to comply with their demands.

Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, said in a statement that security forces are not powerless to stop the country’s rising sense of insecurity.

In his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, according to Shehu, has been assisting security organizations by raising their morale and providing the necessary tools.

Apple’s iPhone 14 may not cost an arm and leg – Here are all the details

$
0
0

The iPhone 14’s rumored price range indicates that it won’t be any more expensive than earlier iPhone models.

This is good news at a time when everything else seems to be getting more expensive due to inflation.

Reports have stated that the starting price of the iPhone 14 will remain at $799, the same as that of the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 that came before it.

It appears that Apple came to this decision despite rising production costs in an effort to motivate customers to upgrade.

Even though it’s positive to see a phone’s pricing remain stable over time, the iPhone 14’s situation is especially positive given that the rest of the lineup is expected to see price increases.

First off, there won’t be a follow-up to the iPhone 13 mini this autumn, which is now the cheapest model in the iPhone flagship range at $699. Instead, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max is expected, with a starting price of $899.

The normal Pro and Pro Max editions of the iPhone 14 Pro are reportedly seeing a $100 price rise. Since Apple is reportedly proposing significant modifications, including employing a new pill-and-punch hole notch design in place of a notch, adding a 48MP main camera, and adding an always-on display, it is debatable whether the cost will be worthwhile.

Unfortunately, the regular iPhone 14 doesn’t have many new rumored features.

Given that Apple is reportedly employing the same A15 chipset from the iPhone 13 series for the entry-level iPhone 14s rather than a new A16 processor, it’s possible that it won’t have the new notch design or even an improved chipset like usual.

It has been said, however, that the iPhone 14’s front camera will now auto-focus and feature a larger aperture for better low-light photos.

We anticipate the iPhone 14 series to be released in September, as is customary for iPhone releases. There’s still time for more information to surface before the September 13 Apple event.

  • 3 new cases of monkeypox reported in Abia state

Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, these are the five top Nigerian news stories you shouldnt miss:

New record set as Goodness wins gold for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

Nwachukwu Goodness of Team Nigeria won the country’s fourth gold medal at the current Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She accomplished it in dramatic style, twice shattering records before winning the competition.

The 23-year-old, the only contestant from Nigeria in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/61-64 competition, far outperformed her rivals, breaking records with her first two throws.

Prior to Thursday, Nwachukwu had the F42 World Record with the best mark of 33.35m, but she increased that mark with her first throw of 34.84m and her subsequent throw of 36.56m.

Though she couldn’t throw any further in subsequent attempts, she was met with thundering cheers from the Alexander Stadium crowd each time she tried.

Adijat Adenike Olarinoye and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, two members of Team Nigeria competing in the current Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, were earlier reported to have received particular commendation for their record-breaking performances at the Games.

Nwachukwu is anticipated to get special accolades before the Birmingham Games come to a close.

In the meantime, Team Nigeria had already earned a bronze medal in the men’s lightweight division of the Powerlifting competition through Nnamdi Innocent before Nwachukwu’s gold medal triumph.

Atiku and Wike in closed-door meeting, promise to end the PDP conflict in seven days.

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, met with Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, on Thursday in an effort to appease enraged party members.

The meeting, which was held in private, was held at the villa in Abuja owned by a former minister named Jerry Gana.

A team to mediate a reconciliation between Mr. Wike and his followers and Atiku was established by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) just 24 hours before the meeting.

After Atiku defeated Mr. Wike to become the party’s standard bearer, there was a disagreement between the two camps. The situation worsened when Atiku chose Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running partner instead of Mr. Wike.

Their long-awaited, face-to-face meeting was held behind closed doors at the private residence of Professor Jerry Gana, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT, and they pledged to resolve their differences within seven days.

The meeting was held on the day Atiku named Senator Dino Melaye and Daniel Bwala as his campaign spokespeople, with the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, boasting that the party would win the 2023 polls on account of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged failures.

AfDB Grants FG 134 Million Dollar Loan to Boost Wheat Production

The Federal Government has secured a 134 million dollar loan from the Africa Development Bank to increase wheat output.

Dr. Muhammad Mahmoud, the minister of agriculture and rural development, made this statement in Abuja while updating State House reporters on the ministry’s execution of the president’s directive.

He clarified that the plan was to prevent the nation from suffering from a severe shortage of wheat, whose demand and price had increased as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The project, according to the minister, will increase wheat output to 750,000 metric tonnes in the dry season of 2022 with 250,000 farmers farming 250,000 hectares.

He said that Jigawa, Kebbi, Kano, Bauchi, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, and Yobe, as well as Adamawa and Taraba states, will cultivate the wheat.

The minister said that in order to safeguard farmers who were having security issues, the Federal Government had sent out 5,000 agro rangers from the Nigeria Civil Defense Corps.

He said that the 2.4 billion dollars’ worth of externally funded projects carried out by the Buhari government had generated roughly 3.6 million indirect employment.

FG, Google to collaborate against proscribed groups on Youtube

Google, a major internet firm, and the Federal Government are working together to reduce the number of subversive YouTube channels that propagate false information and hate speech against Nigeria.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, said this on Thursday in Abuja when a Google team paid him a courtesy visit.

He expressed his happiness that Google and the Federal Government both have the same concerns about using social media responsibly.

“We urge Google to investigate ways to address how banned groups and terrorist organizations exploit secret, unlisted YouTube channels and live streaming,” Lai Mohammed said.

The minister also stated that “Google platforms should not enable channels and emails including names of outlawed parties and their affiliates.”

He said that with over 100 million Internet users, Nigerians are some of the world’s most active social media users.

Nigerians can socialize, exchange ideas, make a living, and take part in social and political matters thanks to internet platforms like Google, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp, he said.

However, the minister pointed out that dishonest individuals or organizations also exploit these platforms for harmful or subversive operations.

In an effort to establish a framework for cooperatively protecting Nigerian consumers of Internet platforms, Mohammed said that the Nigerian government has suggested a “Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.”

“As the nation gets ready for general elections next year, this code couldn’t have arrived at a better time. To ensure responsible Internet usage and safeguard our people from the negative consequences of social media, we are dedicated to collaborating with platforms like yours as well as the civil society, attorneys, media professionals, and other key stakeholders,” he added.

Charles Murito, the Google Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Government Affairs, and Public Policy, said that the site has a program called “Trusted Flaggers” for users who are trained to monitor and interact with certain content.

3 new cases of monkeypox reported in Abia state

Three new cases of monkeypox have been reported in Abia State in recent weeks. The State Epidemiologist, Peace Nwogwugwu, confirmed this.

The state administration has warned inhabitants to abide by all set rules in order to prevent and control the spread of the monkeypox epidemic in the state.

Nwogwugwu stated during a radio show in Umuahia that two of the three verified patients made a quick recovery.

She continued by saying that contact tracing and sample collection for testing of people who were in close proximity to them had been completed.

While the government has started essential response efforts, she pointed out that citizens may help prevent and manage the disease by following the prescribed public health guidelines.

The epidemiologist emphasized that because this illness spreads through contact, locals should keep social distance and avoid contact with infected or suspected people. They should also take routine hand washing seriously and avoid unnecessary gatherings and travel.

She urged public health professionals to treat each patient with a fresh hand glove after washing their hands and to keep a high index of suspicion. They were also urged to report and escalate any cases of patients presenting with high fevers and rashes so that the proper steps could be taken.
