Everyone can relate to how hard it is to realize dreams, especially when they are not in the traditional bracket of what a life-long career should be. The heartache, the lack of support from family members, and so much more. “Road to Spotlight” is a film that depicts the difficulties of pursuing one’s dream while also trying to make money to survive.

The short film tells the story of Naomi (Sophie Alakija), an ordinary Nigerian who dreams of becoming a successful vlogger, making lots of money, and gaining fans via her creativity with her lifestyle YouTube channel. She recognizes, however, that dreams do not become reality overnight, and she still has to earn a living to survive. Will she be able to attain her ambitious goals? The answer is in the movie.

A few weeks ago, TECNO premiered the movie “Roles Reversed,” which was shot on the Camon 19 Pro. The video quality was great, the story was top notch, and the acting was mind blowing. With Sophie Alakija as the lead actress and Kayode Kasum as the director, we can only guess how good the movie “Road to the Spotlight” would be.

According to police in the US capital, two individuals were killed and two more were in serious condition on Friday as a result of a lightning strike that occurred the previous evening close to the White House.

A statement from Washington’s fire and emergency department said that two men and two women suffered “serious life-threatening injuries” as a result of the lightning striking Lafayette Square, a small park opposite the White House, just before 7:00 pm (2300 GMT) on Thursday.

All of the victims were transferred to nearby hospitals, but the Metropolitan Police said on Friday morning that two of them, Donna Mueller, 75, and James Mueller, 76, both from Janesville, Wisconsin, had been declared dead.

According to investigators, the other two individuals are still in severe condition.

A White House spokeswoman said the Biden administration was “saddened by the tragic loss of life.”

“We are praying for those still fighting for their lives,” said Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Fire and emergency services department spokesperson Vito Maggiolo said in a statement on social media that the US Secret Service and park police sprung into action to aid the four after witnessing the strike.

The department shared pictures of the situation on social media, showing multiple ambulances and at least one fire truck with flashing lights.

Witness David Root reported hearing a “horrific blast” to NBC.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. “It was surreal. I have never seen anything like this in my entire life.”

He claimed that when the lightning struck the park, he had been hiding under a tree.

He stated that the people “weren’t moving,” so he and others rushed over to offer assistance.

Monday Orukpe, a police inspector, allegedly passed away on Wednesday in Lagos as a result of the injuries he got when soldiers of the Army Ordinance Corps beat him into a coma.

It was discovered that the troops, who were traveling in an army bus, encountered a traffic jam on the Lagos/Badagry Expressway near the CCC Gate.

According to what was revealed, trouble began when two of the soldiers hopped on a motorcycle and drove to where the police officers were directing traffic, and demanded that they clear the way for their bus.

The police officers said that due to the road’s extreme congestion, it was not feasible to clear the traffic.

The two soldiers became enraged, attacked them, kidnapped them, and then took them to Ojo Cantonment.

A third policeman was allegedly going to be kidnapped before they left the area, but he fired rounds into the air, forcing the troops to withdraw and allowing him to flee.

Monday Orukpe, who was one of these officers, fainted and fell into a coma as a result of the extreme torture, a police source said. The troops rushed him to the army hospital, but it was too late and he passed away.

The insider stated, “We have recovered the corpse and efforts are being made to release the second officer receiving treatment in their hospital. The soldiers carted away the police rifles.”

The Army responds

Major Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, 81 Division Public Relations, responded to the incident by saying that the 81 Division’s attention has been called to an internet report about it.

“The Division is already in touch with the Lagos State Police Command to resolve the matter.

“This incident is highly regrettable given the Division’s disposition and zero tolerance for any misconduct.

“Accordingly, the Division has instituted a Board of Inquiry to unravel the circumstance surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“At the end of the investigation, anyone found culpable will be made to face the full wrath of the disciplinary provisions.

“Consequently, the Division wishes to commiserate with the Ojo Police Division and members of the family of the victim,” he said.

Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, these are the five top Nigerian news stories you shouldnt miss:

Arsenal defeats Crystal Palace with two goals in the Premier League kick-off match

Arsenal defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 to kick off the 2022–23 Premier League season. On opening night, goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi sent the Gunners to the top of the league.

At Selhurst Park, Mikel Arteta saw his team get off to a fast start. Martinelli quickly made up for squandering a crucial opportunity in the first few minutes by putting his team ahead with a header following a clever corner sequence. Patrick Vieira could only watch his side desperately try to hold onto the little gap as Arsenal, led by the superb Gabriel Jesus, continued to dominate.

However, after 30 minutes, the Eagles began to gel and put comparable pressure on the opposing end. They created the finest opportunity of the game just before halftime, but Aaron Ramsdale saved the day when Odsonne Edouard really deserved to have leveled the score.

After the break, Palace resumed where they left off, and Ebere Eze should have equalized when Wilfried Zaha sent him superbly through on goal. But once more, Ramsdale was in the ideal position to preserve his perfect record.

The hosts kept trying to score a goal of their own, but William Saliba, who was also making his Premier League debut, frequently stopped them. His perseverance was soon rewarded as he witnessed Bukayo Saka put the game beyond their London opponents on the opposite end. Guehi could only turn his whipped cross beyond Vicente Guaita as the young England winger sprinted down the right side.

Despite being the opening game of the season, the outcome puts Arsenal at the top of the table and gives Arteta the ideal base upon which to develop.

Regarding his opponent, the game had lots of nice aspects, but Vieira’s slow start eventually lost him the game.

Wizkid becomes the first African artist to headline the world’s biggest gaming event in Saudi Arabia

Wizkid, the afrobeats phenomenal superstar, has broken a record by becoming the first performer to ever serve as the event’s headlining act of a gaming event in Saudi Arabia.
The event, which is still going on, was staged in Saudi Arabia’s renowned NXT LVL Arena on Riyadh Boulevard.

On Thursday, August 4, 2022, the Grammy Award-winning singer and composer performed in front of a sizable crowd at the Gamers8 eSports concert.

The Afrobeats superstar entertained the crowd with hit songs from both his old and new music repertoire with the help of his official disc jockey, DJ Tunez, and his band. He sang a number of hit songs, including “Essence,” “Ojuelegba,” “Joro,” “Beat Of Life,” “Mood,” “Ginger,” “Soco,” and many more, with incredible vigor.

The current Middle Eastern event, where competitions are held with entertainment and cultural attractions, is known as “the greatest eSports and gaming festival globally.” It began on July 14 and will conclude on September 8.

The Gamers8 festival has thus far delivered fans and platform enthusiasts with fun-filled events, exhibitions, and futuristic experiences that transport them to the virtual world of gaming.

EFCC vows to crack down on “Forex hoarders” due to Nairas fall

The EFCC has warned to start cracking down on Forex hoarders whose actions are allegedly behind the collapse in the value of the naira.

The warning was made by the commission’s chair, Abdulrasheed Bawa, at a meeting with Bureau de Change operator representatives on Friday in Abuja.

According to a statement by the organization’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Calabar have all been recognized by the EFCC as having the highest concentrations of dollar hoarders in Nigeria.

However, Bawa warned those involved to desist or risk arrest as a major offensive against the speculators is underway.

Bawa also disclosed that the commission has intelligence linking some people and organizations to the hoarding of foreign currencies, especially the United States dollar, in the key commercial cities of Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Calabar.

The EFCC chair met with representatives of BDC operators as part of its attempts to stop the growing foreign currency speculation that has put pressure on the value of the naira.

Election timing will be impacted if voter registration is extended, says INEC

In advance of the general elections in 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission has warned that further extending the Continuous Voter Registration may have unexpected repercussions.

The commission made this observation while noting that additional expenses were associated with extensions and that its staff was worn out as a result of earlier extensions.

Dr. Festus Okoye, the INEC commissioner for voter education, revealed the information in an interview in Abuja.

It is, however, important to note that the electoral umpire ended accepting new registrations on July 31, 2022, despite increased requests for an extension of the voter registration deadline.

However, Okoye warned: “Any additional extension of the present Continuous Voter Registration may have a negative impact on the commission’s agenda and schedule of activities and result in unexpected repercussions.

“The exercise must come to an end as it cannot carry on indefinitely. The commission spread out the registration over a period of one year and granted an extension. To allow the commission to do deduplication and eliminate multiple and double registrations, the exercise must come to an end.

Additionally, the commission must post the register throughout the nation’s 774 local government regions and 8,809 locations where people can lodge claims and complaints. The commission next has to print the Permanent Voter Cards for those legally eligible registrants and arrange for them to pick them up.

The commission must also make copies of the Supplementary Voters Register and Permanent Voter Register available to all registered political parties. The commission set a start date of June 28, 2021, and a finish date of June 30, 2022, for the registration.”

Sanwo-Olu allays fears over impending attack on Lagos

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, has advised citizens to disregard claims of an impending assault on Lagos and assured them that precautions have been taken to better safeguard people and property in the state.

Sanwo-Olu provided the assurance on Friday night following a security briefing with security personnel from the Nigerian Police, Navy, Army, Customs, and Civil Defense, among others.

The governor asked citizens to maintain their composure and carry on with their regular activities despite having heard news reports on social media about an impending attack on Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu claims: “In the past few days or weeks, there has been a lot of news and information on social media concerning the possibility of coming assaults on Lagos. Daily security communications with my security personnel have taken place.

“I want to reassure the people that we are taking care of this. We believed that it was essential to hold this significantly prolonged security meeting.

“At the meeting, we received a comprehensive report on what the current security situations in the state are.

“We have come up with strategies and interventions, but I want to assure our people that our security men are alive to their responsibility to ensure the security in the state is not compromised.

“Our advice to our citizens is to be law abiding and go about their lawful duties and to say something if they see something.

“Security is the duty of all. They should utilise all the security communication that is available.

“We want to assure you we are not unaware of all the concerns that have gone round. The security operatives have given all the assurances to continue to make Lagos safe for all.”

7 new Movies and TV shows to watch this weekend

$
0
0

These days, choosing what to watch can feel nearly impossible with the number of streaming providers available. Sometimes we get caught browsing and scrolling for so long that we simply give up and switch off the TV.

It might be challenging to choose among all the popular TV shows and movies, especially when websites like Netflix offer us their most popular selections (not to mention the fact that popular doesn’t always equate to good).

Fortunately, we’ve chosen to simplify this process by selecting some of the top shows and films from a variety of streaming providers, making that interminable scroll a thing of the past.

Here are 7 Movies and TV shows to watch this weekend.

The Sandman (Netflix)

The graphic books from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman have traveled a long and convoluted path to the big screen. Over the past 30 years, a number of adaptation attempts have lingered in development hell (including a film that would have featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt). But at last, The Sandman is prepared to haunt all of our dreams.

Morpheus, the king of the Dreaming realm, is portrayed by Tom Sturridge in the lead role. He spends more than a century behind bars after being taken prisoner by occultists in 1916. When he returns, his country is in ruins. The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), a living nightmare, has gotten away. It won’t be simple to find him and put things right because Morpheus also has to deal with occult detective Johanna Constantine and Lucifer Morningstar (played by Gwendoline Christie and Jenna Coleman).

Our initial thoughts of the show are mostly positive – at least for episode 1. The adaptation has the feeling that it was carefully made, and anyone searching for a new show to watch will want to binge it.

Luck (Apple TV Plus)

The fact that Luck is produced by the discredited former co-founder of Pixar, Skydance Animation, explains why it looks, sounds, and feels like a Pixar film. The protagonist of the tale is Sam, who may be the unluckiest person alive. She was abandoned at a foster home as a young child, and she will soon turn 18 and leave the system.

Sam finds a fortunate penny that she wants to present to a friend, but she unavoidably loses it. In her effort to find it, she meets Bob, a lucky black cat, just as things are starting to look up. He leads Sam to the Land of Luck, a place brimming with lucky trinkets like four-leaf clovers.

There, she searches for a lucky penny to take back home.

Paper Girls (Prime Video)

Because of its 1980s setting and science fiction aspects, Paper Girls has been compared to Stranger Things by some, but the new Amazon Prime series is much more than that.

This science fiction drama, which is based on a well-known comic book series of the same name, examines the lives of four teenage girls who journey across time to save the world, eventually running into future versions of themselves along the way.

Keep Breathing (Netflix)

Given its Cast Away meets Lost narrative, a new show on Netflix has been climbing the ratings, and we can see why.

Keep Breathing is a limited-run television series that centers on Liv (Melissa Barrera Martnez), a lady who must rely on her wits to survive after her private plane crashes in the midst of the woods.

Purple Hearts (Netflix)

Fans of romance shouldn’t let Purple Hearts pass them by. The protagonist of this Netflix original, based on the same-titled book, is a singer-songwriter named Cassie (Sofia Carson), who gets caught up in a passionate relationship with a Marine named Luke (Nicholas Galitzine).

The fact that it has surpassed films like The Gray Man and The Sea Beast as the most watched movie on Netflix is more proof that it has undoubtedly been popular with fans.

Not Okay (Hulu)

Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) and Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf) feature in this dark comedy directed by Hostages star Quinn Shephard about an aspiring influencer who pretends to travel to Paris in order to become famous, but finds herself in a convoluted lie when others assume she survived a terrorist attack.

It turns out that the satirical movie received positive reviews from reviewers, in addition to the excitement that the picture had previously generated thanks to its leading actors.

Uncoupled (Netflix)

Neil Patrick Harris may be most known for his role as a rake in How I Met Your Mother, but in Uncoupled he plays a very different character.

In this comedy, Harris plays Michael, a real estate agent in his forties whose 17-year relationship is suddenly ended by his boyfriend. Now, Michael must navigate New York City’s dating scene while still attempting to understand himself.

Crossdresser and well-known Nigerian entertainer Denrele Edun has talked about his interactions with Big Brother Naija contestants.

The media personality acknowledged being “helpful” in the show’s operations during an appearance in an interview on Lunch Time with Vanguard, which was broadcast on Saturday.

People who want to be on the show, according to him, contact him to help them get selected and become candidates.

He said, “I get a lot of nudes from people who want to go for BBNaija. I get all kinds of monetary offers.

“I have gotten N100m, N50m, N30m and I tell people go and do something reasonable with your money.

“So, let’s just say if you don’t have a Denrele in your life that can help you rediscover yourself or help you get to the next level and give you direction to help you navigate your way through life, then what are you looking for? Go and find a Denrele.

“Away from that, yes! I have been instrumental to a lot of these things. It is what it is.

“I’m at the industry’s center of gravity. Let’s just say I know people in the right places. When they ask you, tell them to come and meet me.”

He pointed out that it all began when Karen Igho, the Big Brother Africa 2011 winner, mentioned how he assisted her in filling out her application.

Asked if he influenced anyone into the BBNS7 edition, he replied “Well! I have a lot of amazing people in the house and some that are still coming in.”

The host, Siji Oyewusi asked again if there’ll be new housemates coming on the show and he affirmed it, saying ”Ýes, they are coming in”

“I just don’t want to start eavesdropping. I want people to enjoy the show. That is what the show is about. I feel the show is therapeutic. I watch the show and I see people I can relate to, people who remind me of myself, and I’m drawn to them. Maybe that is what I also look for in people who I might decide to say, let’s say, take a chance with this person, let’s see where it goes.”

#BBNaijaS7: Beauty Disqualified after two weeks from the Big Brother House because of a man, Cyph and Christy O evicted

Beauty Tukura, now a former housemate of Big Brother Naija season seven and Miss Nigeria, was disqualified from the competition on Sunday.

Beauty was disqualified after receiving two more strikes on Sunday.

“Your actions last night were inappropriate; you should have controlled your emotions,” remarked Biggie. “You took away your microphone, and after hurling your wig and glasses at Groovy, you threw another object at him.”

Last week, Beauty received a strike for acting aggressively toward Ilebaye and yanking the housemate’s wig.

Beauty was back at it on Saturday night, throwing her wig and spectacles at Groovy and attempting to smash his microphone.

Beauty’s reaction resulted from Groovy’s dance party activities with Chomzy, a Level 1 housemate.

Beauty, who appeared to be intoxicated after, gave her lover Groovy a tongue lashing.

She yelled at Phyna, one of the other housemates who tried to warn her, and claimed that Groovy’s dick was quite small.

Beauty and Groovy have been one of the brewing love stories from this season of the show.

Cyph and Christy O also became the first housemates to be evicted from the Big Brother house.

As usual, the ousted housemates wasted no time leaving Biggie’s house. Nigerians, however, are not surprised by Christy and Cyph’s eviction because they acknowledged that they had nothing to contribute.

While Ebuka said Christy-O stated she was not in the proper state of mind to grace the stage, Cyph on his own part is anticipating better things life has to offer.

Nigeria sets new African Record with relay hurdle win at Common Wealth Games

Team Nigeria has won yet another gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The 4x100m Women’s Relay competition was won on Sunday at the Alexander Stadium by the team of Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rose Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha.

The group won Nigeria’s 11th gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by setting a new African Record of 42.10s.

Record-setting Tobi Amusan got things going for Nigeria and skillfully transferred the baton to Favour Ofili, who finished second in the 200-meter race on Saturday.

Rose Chukwuma received the baton from Ofili, who then passed it on to the anchor leg runner, Grace Nwokocha, who did not fail to bring home the gold.

In the earlier men’s 4x100m event, which the English team won, the quartet of Udodi Onwuzurike, Favour Ashe, Alaba Akintola, and Raymond Ekevwo also put up a strong performance to win the bronze medal.

The men from Nigeria finished in 38.81 seconds to place third.

Nigeria has already equaled her best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games with 11 gold medals and is on track to surpass it with at least two more gold medal chances.

Gunmen Attack Cubana Chiefpriest In Anambra

Gunmen have reportedly attacked famous socialite, Okechukwu Pascal, who is otherwise called Cubana Chiefpriest.

Okechukwu who is generally famously known as Cubana Chiefpriest was said to have been attacked on Sunday morning in Anambra State, while going to Asaba from Owerri, in Imo State.

A source said: “Obscure shooters went after him and his escort on their way from an event at Owerri-Onitsha Express Road.”

The Socialite was said to have gotten away safe, however his G Wagon and that of his escort were filled with slugs.

In the interim, Cubana Chiefpriest has responded to the assault on him to affirm that he is indeed fine.

The socialite who wrote via his Twitter handle said the episode occurred in Anambra, and not in Imo as detailed by a few web-based entertainment blogs.

Alluding to uncertainty in the South-East, the socialite expressed: “The whole South East should be cleaned up.”

NPA Begins Construction Of 4.5km Access Road To Onne Port

To facilitate the flow of cargo into and out of the port, the Federal Ocean Terminal in the Onne Port Complex has seen the start of building on the 4.5 km access road “D” by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

The 4.5-kilometer-long road would be constructed with street lights and other ancillary services, and it would take 10 months to complete.

Mohammed Bello-Koko, managing director of NPA, who officially started off the construction in Onne on Friday during his maiden visit to the port, said the road was part of the port development plan of phase 4B that was granted to the Deep Offshore.

He said that the project’s cost was included in the overall port rehabilitation contract that had long since been granted but had been put on hold for various reasons.

He said that the route, which leads to the Onne Port, has seen a significant increase in both cargo and other industries.

“We decided it was time to request the contractor return to the job site. This will make entering the port easier. We want to make sure that the roads inside the port are in good shape while we are complaining about the roads beyond the port, which is outside of our scope,” he said.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose prolonged strike has kept students away from classes for many months, has claimed that it will not be able to prevent the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from holding another round of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) when it is due.

This statement was made by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, while he was overseeing the mop-up exam, which was specifically organized for candidates whose centers were allegedly engaged in malpractice and candidates with biometric issues during the general examination for this year in May in Lagos on Saturday.

Apart from the fact that more than half of private institutions are open, he claims that some public universities, especially the majority of state universities, are not striking.

“I can name a few of them. I am aware of a number of universities, including Kwara State University, Lagos State University, and Osun State University. And the explanation is straightforward. Many of them do not receive state government aid, so their school fees are used to pay the wages of their instructors.

“They are aware that their salaries won’t be paid if they go on strike,” Prof Oloyede said.

Additionally, certain other public universities, including the Defense Academy, Army University, Police University, and others, are not striking.

One person dies during fighting at Osun state PDP meeting

During a battle that erupted at a PDP meeting in Oloba Ward, Atapara Area, Ede, Osun State, one person known as Kuranga was feared dead.

Money was the root of the argument, and local sources reported hearing gunshots and seeing Kuranga shot as a result of the argument.

Further information revealed that one of the individuals engaged in the misunderstanding had dispatched police officers to make arrests when things got out of hand.

“Kuranga was shot when we were putting him under arrest. But I’m unable to immediately identify the shooter. The occurrence took place on Friday,” a source mentioned

In an interview, Olabisi Atanda, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ spokesperson for Osun Command, confirmed that someone had been shot during the meeting.

She stated, “There was a PDP meeting where there was confusion regarding funds released for the most recent governorship election.

“There was a fight during the meeting, and one of the attendees called the police in so they could make an arrest.

“It was at that time that one person called Kuranga was hit by a bullet. I can’t confirm if he died or not. The incident led to a stampede in a market around the area as people ran in different directions. But peace has returned.”

The Osun Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, was repeatedly called, and as of the time this report was filed, she had not responded to a text message sent to her regarding the incident. This made attempts to gain a police response to the incident fruitless.

However, Oladele Oluwabamiji, the Osun PDP’s director of media and strategy, accused the state’s APC leadership of inviting hoodlums to the PDP meeting.

In addition to claiming that Mr. Kofoworola Babajide, the Minority Leader of the House, was present, Oluwabamiji revealed that the thugs who broke into the meeting were hauling rifles with the police.

He acknowledged the attack on Mr. Babajide, the lawmaker’s father, whose home was reportedly destroyed, and he identified the perpetrators as APC thugs.

Amaka in search of new bunkmates as Khalid and Daniella’s love noises won’t let her sleep #BBNaijaS7

As the BBNaija7 season began, one of the first few “ships” that caught our attention was the fiery bond between Khalid and Daniella, who are never shy to show us exactly how they feel. Their bond is really clear for all to see.

Now, we get that Khalid and Daniella are super attracted to each other. Their bond is from “Mars” and they are also not afraid to show it, but they should at least pity Amaka.

For several nights now, the camera has shown them engaged in very naughty activities under the duvet. However, Sunday night saw their passionate lovemaking reaching new heights, bordering on Amaka’s convenience.

As they were doing one or two things, the camera showed a rather perplexed Amaka, whose bed is closest to them, transfixed by their activities.

How could she not watch when they were not even subtle about it to begin with?

Some people have called the couple ‘real’ as they have not been afraid to engage in sexual activities despite the blacklash they know they will receive from Nigeria’s conservative viewers.

They are both adults, after all, and as long as these sexual activities are consensual, they are free to do whatever they want to do.

Courtesy, however, demands that they be considerate of the other housemates they share the space with. Or, at least, consideration for their bunkmate Amaka, so she can sleep.

We also hope that they are using protection because we don’t think Biggie is ready to do Omugwo in his house.

Here are some reactions to their very sexual love affair on Twitter.

Kizz Daniel: A talented artist with a very bad work ethic

Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, popularly called Kizz Daniel, is currently trending on Twitter for not showing up for a stage performance in Tanzania.

Kizz is currently on a tour called the “Afro Classic World Tour” and he is expected to perform in three African countries: Tanzania, Rwanda, and Malawi.

A video clearly shows enraged fans leaving the event venue after the Nigerian artist failed to show up.

According to people close to the hosts of the show, it was reported that Kizz Daniel was late for his flight from Nairobi, Kenya to Tanzania, and had to be changed to a new flight.

Due to the pressure of being late, his bag containing his show clothes was misplaced.

When Kizz Daniel arrived in Tanzania at around three to four in the night, he did not know if one of his bags had been forgotten in the Kenyan airport.

Since it was already late and all the shops were closed, he had to call a Tanzanian artist he was close to and get him to find a designer to make him new clothes.

The tension started when the artist wanted a certain type of clothing, as he didn’t like all the options sent to him.

In order to protect his image and brand, Kizz Daniel refused to go on stage.

The artist’s excuse did not hold water for both the promoters of the event and fans.

Apparently, that’s not all.

Some fans had bought tables worth about $5000, and Kizz Daniel’s failure to show up led to some altercations at the event venue.

Kizz Daniel, who was recently touring ten American cities, also arrived four hours late for one of his concert performances.

Fans who attended the Buga crooner’s concert were very angered by his lateness and showed their displeasure as they threw papers and cups on the stage while demanding a refund.

This seems to be a recurring theme with the Nigerian artist, and it doesn’t speak well of his brand.

The widely circulated opinion on social media is that while the artist may be very talented, going to his shows would be a waste of time as you would not receive your money’s worth.

Of course, Twitter had a lot to say about Kizz Daniel’s latest misdoings. Here are some of the reactions.

Like other professional lackeys, Sanwo-Olu’s entire career has been made possible by the interventions of powerful patrons – Jandor

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) gubernatorial candidate, Jandor, has taken to social media to respond to some of the claims made about his candidacy by the sitting Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during an interview over the weekend.

The interview, which aired as part of the Sunday politics program on Channels TV, saw the Governor making some very bold claims in the assurance of his re-election into office.

Sanwo-Olu in response to a question about the viability of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Dr. Olajide Adediran, and his running mate, Funke Akindele, stated that the politics of Lagos State is not a circus and requires competent hands in order to steer the ship of the state.

The Governor said, “If you have an emergency at 3 am, who would you call? What are your chances? Will you call a man that has experience, that has gone through the trenches before, that lives with it, that understands what the issues are, and that appreciates what challenge you have even at 3 am? Or will you leave your chance to a man who does not know where the dial is and does not know what the issue of governance is?

“This is Lagos. This is an informed audience. This is not a tea party. We are talking of real governance and the lives of over 20 million Nigerians bigger than the economy of Ghana or Kenya which is in itself a country. It is not a circus, it is a real thing and I don’t want to spite anyone because I have respect for all of the candidates that have emerged and the candidate of the particular party you are talking about.”

In response to this, Jandor tweeted:

“Yesterday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave an interview where he made certain comments about my decision to run and my capacity to lead.

“I am not surprised that discrediting my achievements and questioning my competence was the angle he chose to approach the very legitimate questions he was asked.

“Sanwo-Olu has no frame of reference by which to assess my achievements. He has never had to build a business from the ground up in Lagos, one of the toughest and most competitive business markets in the world.

“Like other professional lackeys, his entire career has been possible thanks to the interventions of powerful patrons, so he cannot possibly understand why anyone would consider being an independent entrepreneur who bootstrapped a business and grew it to the point where I could comfortably create jobs in Lagos, despite crushing taxes and prohibitive policies, something to be proud of.

See the full thread below.

It is clear that both gubernatorial candidates are not afraid to play a little dirty to secure the governorship seat.

Lagos residents owe it to themselves to obtain their PVC and to ignore this verbal combat. The focus should be on the qualifications of the two candidates in order to vote sensibly.

Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, these are the five top Nigerian news stories you shouldnt miss:

Kizz Daniel arrested, freed from police custody in Tanzania

The musician Oluwatobiloba Anidugbe, also known as Kizz Daniel, has reportedly been released from Tanzanian police custody, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.

On Monday, a video that went viral on social media showed the musician being taken into custody by Tanzanian authorities.

Although no official comment was made by the authorities, it was revealed that the singer’s refusal to appear at a local event may have had something to do with the arrest.

In response, NiDCOM tweeted that the artist was being detained by Tanzania’s Oyster Bay Police Station Civil Police in Dar es Salaam.

“We are presently engaging our Mission and see what can be done. We will keep the public posted with our investigation. Thank you,” the Commission added.

Giving an update, NiDCOM said, “Kizz Daniel has been released. His legal team will, however, report back to the police tomorrow while he will subsequently return to Nigeria.”

Health workers absent as measles outbreak kills 50 in Rivers

Community leaders in Rivers State’s Kugbo Clan, Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Wednesday urged urgent government action in response to a measles outbreak that they claimed had killed 50 people.

It was learned that the communicable disease, which is thought to have been first identified in the Amurouttoru-Kugbo community, has spread to the clan’s Emago-Kugbo and Akani-Kugbo communities and has resulted in child fatalities.

“We have a scenario that is destroying Okugbo Clan, which includes Emakgbo, Akani, and Akpotu,” said Levi Marcus, chairman of the community development committee for the Emago Kugbo clan.

“Based on what we saw and verified, 20 children died in Akani-Okugbo. The same thing will happen if you travel to Amuruotoru once more. 15 cases have been documented so far. Although we made every effort, the authorities did not respond.”

Edoghotu Edwin, the Emago-Kugbo youth leader, declared: “The current situation is awful. The children are suffering because measles has spread throughout the neighborhood. In Emago, almost 15 kids have passed away.

“The issue now includes Akani and Amuruotor. We are requesting assistance from the government because there are no health workers available to address the problem.”

Gynecologist Dr. Eli Sokarimie said that the lack of expert surveillance, failure to immunize infants, and sensitization of residents in the remote Abua/Odual region may have made the problem worse.

Mother Baby and Adolescent Global Health Foundation Executive Director Sokarimie stated: “Rivers State had the lowest prevalence of measles infection, at 11 per 100,000 cases.

However, data indicate that the prevalence of measles among children under the age of five has been rising steadily and persistently in Nigeria.”

Nigerian Novelist, and director, Biyi Bandele is dead

Biyi Bandele, a novelist, playwright, and filmmaker, has passed away.

He passed away on Sunday in Lagos, according to a statement issued by his family on Monday.

He was 54.

The deceased’s daughter, Temi Bandele, who spoke for the family in the statement, called him “a prodigiously talented writer and film-maker, as well as a loyal friend and beloved father.”

“He was a storyteller to his bones, with an unblinking perspective, singular voice, and wisdom which spoke boldly through all of his art, in poetry, novels, plays, and on screen. He told stories that made a profound impact and inspired many all over the world. His legacy will live on through his work.

“He was taken from us much too soon. He had already said so much so beautifully and had so much more to say.

“We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and friends as we grieve his loss,” the statement read.

UK museum to return 72 looted Benin artifacts

The Nigerian government was informed on Sunday by London’s Horniman Museum that it would get 72 artifacts, including 12 bronze plaques known as Benin Bronzes, which were stolen from Benin City by British soldiers in 1897.

The Benin Bronzes are a group of some of Africa’s most important cultural artifacts. They were produced from brass and bronze in the once-powerful Kingdom of Benin in what is now southern Nigeria from at least the 16th century onwards.

They were taken during a British military incursion along with thousands of other objects, and they are now on display in museums around Europe and the US.

While Western institutions struggle with the cultural legacy of colonialism, African nations have fought for years to retrieve works looted by explorers and colonizers.

German officials followed the lead established by Jesus College at Cambridge University and the Quai Branly museum in Paris last year by returning the first of more than 1,100 valuable sculptures to Nigeria last month.

The Horniman said Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) had requested the return of the artifacts at the beginning of the year.

It said: “The evidence is very clear that these objects were acquired through force, and external consultation supported our view that it is both moral and appropriate to return their ownership to Nigeria,” said Eve Salomon, chair of the trustees of the Horniman Museum and Gardens.

“The Horniman is pleased to be able to take this step, and we look forward to working with the NCMM to secure longer-term care for these precious artifacts.”

NCMM Director-General, Abba Tijani, welcomed the decision, saying he looked forward to discussing loan agreements and collaborations with the Horniman.

The British Museum in London, which has the largest and most significant collection of Benin Bronzes, is expected to feel more pressure as a result of the repatriation.

Exam Malpractice: WAEC withholds 365,564 results

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, withheld the results of 365,564 applicants who took the West African Senior School Certificate Test (WASSCE) this year due to suspicions of examination fraud.

Of the 1,601,047 test takers overall, the withheld results represent 22.83 percent of them.

This information was provided on Monday by Mr. Patrick Areghan, Head of the Nigerian National Office of WAEC, during a breakdown of candidate performance in Lagos.

“The analysis of the statistics of the candidate’s performance in the examination reveals that of the 1,601,047 candidates who sat for the examination, 1,409,529 candidates, representing 88.04 percent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five (5) subjects, including or excluding English Language and/or Mathematics;

Additionally, 1,222,505 candidates, or 76.36 percent, received credits in at least five (5) disciplines, including English Language and Mathematics, and above.

“Of this number, 597,811 i.e. 37.34% were male candidates, while 624,694 i.e. 39.02% were female candidates. The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2021, that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 81.70%. Thus, there is a 5.34% decrease in performance in this regard,” Areghan explained.

The WAEC boss noted that 1713 special needs candidates sat for the 2022 WASSCE.

The organization did, however, highlight some of the difficulties it overcame, namely the need to ensure that applicants in the South East and North West who were impacted by security concerns took the exam at a later date and that their results were also made public.

Areghan commented on the rise in irregularities by saying, “The results of 365,564 candidates, or 22.83 percent of all candidates who took the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported incidences of examination malpractice.

“The difference between this and the 10.9 percent seen in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2021 is (11.74%). The causes behind this are not implausible. The candidates are no longer capable of learning.

Poor exam preparation is prevalent. The so-called “Expo,” which is nonexistent, is used excessively. When candidates entered the examination room and realized everything they had celebrated was a lie, they merely became frustrated.

Because of this, some of them sadly failed the test when they would have passed if they had trusted in themselves and worked hard to prepare.”

Owo Church Massacre Suspects Arrested – General Irabor

The suspects in a terrorism attack on the Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo have been taken into custody two months after the alleged occurrence.

This information was revealed on Tuesday by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Leo Irabor, in a discussion with directors and editors of Nigerian media outlets.

The attackers were apprehended, according to General Irabor, during joint operations by the police, the Department of Security Services (DSS), and the Armed Forces.

On June 5, while attendees fled for safety, the gunmen entered the church, opened fire on the congregation, and also triggered explosives, killing about 40 people.

Amotekun Corps agents had earlier detained some individuals in connection with the killings in Ondo State.

Adetunji Adeleye, the state commander of Amotekun, assured journalists in Akure on June 23 that all of the perpetrators of the attack on the place of worship would be caught.

Adeleye, however, did not give the actual number of the suspected terrorists arrested.

“As regards the Owo incident, we have recovered the last vehicle they used for that operation, we made some arrests, and we have also recovered some vital things which we are working on,” he said.

“A number of people have been arrested concerning the Owo issue, as well as a number of equipment. On that day, we pursued them to the point that we recovered the vehicle and we are still pursuing them. We have told you that until we get to the root, I can assure you that the perpetrators and their sponsors will be brought to book.”

The Zoonotic Langya Virus: Everything You Need to Know About the New Contagion That Has Infected 35 People in China

$

At least 35 people in two regions of China have been infected with the new infectious strain of the Zoonotic Langya virus, also known as LayV.

The mainland Henan and Shandong regions of China have reported cases of the outbreak, according to Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Investigation into the primary infections revealed that the infections were infrequent, the cases were scattered, and there was no evidence of community transmission.

What is the Zoonotic Langya Virus?

The Zoonotic Langya virus, also known as LayV, is a novel henipavirus that mostly spreads from animal to animal. However, after 35 human infections were identified in China, health authorities are now concerned about its human-associated dissemination.

Meanwhile, the results of 25 wild animal species tests revealed that a small insectivorous mammal called a shrew, which looks like a mouse, could be the natural host of the Langya henipavirus.

According to the CDC official, the virus was found in roughly 27% of the tested shrew subjects.

This occurs at a time when China is battling to put an end to occasional coronavirus outbreaks, which started in Hebei earlier this year.

Beijing declared a number of strict lockdowns in accordance with the zero-COVID Policy, forcing 11 million residents of the province to stay inside.

Eventually, Shanghai reported a new escalation in cases, which compelled Beijing to put severe restrictions on citizens.

Following a COVID outbreak, the Xi Jinping-led Chinese authorities imposed restrictions on the beach city of Sanya on Monday, detaining at least 80,000 tourists.

Zoonotic Langya Virus symptoms

Out of the 35 individuals, 26 had only the Langya virus as their only infection. The 26 infected people showed symptoms like body aches, fever, coughing, and colds, as well as a decrease in white blood cells.

The specialists indicated that the virus might cause a decline in platelet count, more liver and kidney damage, and ultimately death.

People are urged by experts to “pay close attention” to LayV updates

Taiwanese health experts have also advised people to take steps to avoid community spread, even if no cases of human-to-human transmission have occurred yet. The CDC has not yet determined whether the aforementioned virus can spread from person to person.

Chuang Jen-Hsiang, the deputy director general of the Taiwan CDC, told Taipei News that locals need to “pay close attention” to further information on the virus.

Domestic animals test positive for Zoonotic Langya virus

Many domestic and wild animals tested positive for the LayV virus, according to a serological study done by the Taiwan CDC. At least 25 different kinds of wild animals, 2% of tested goats, and 5% of tested canines all tested positive for the new henipavirus strain.

The tennis champion of the United States, Serena Williams, declared on Tuesday that “the countdown has begun” to her retirement from the game.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion continued by saying that it is now time for her to change her course in life.

Although she has not given a precise date for her exit, Williams said, “It’s the hardest thing I could ever imagine.”

The tennis player’s statement follows her first victory of the year, a two-set triumph at the National Bank Open.

“I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,” the legendary athlete said in an interview with Vogue.

“It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time, I’m ready for what’s next,” she said.

Williams said in an exclusive interview with Vogue that she never liked the word “retirement” and would much rather use the word “evolution.”

She said, “I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.

“A few years ago, I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

Serena Williams is still set to play at next week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

She wrote, “’Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun.”

In her interview, the illustrious Williams expressed her gratitude to her fans and said she would miss both the game and the person she once was.

Kizz Daniel apologizes to Tanzanians, promises free show on Friday.

For failing to appear at the performance he was hired to lead last Sunday, the music celebrity was earlier detained in Tanzania.

But on Monday, he was soon freed from police custody after being taken into custody.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the “Buga” singer stated, “It was not intentional.”

Kizz Daniel also promised to perform for free in Tanzania on Friday.

“This Friday, a free show by the way, I will be partnering with Straight Up Vibes to make that happen. I must apologize to the fans. None of this was intentional,” Daniel said.

Stephen Uwa, the show organizer, earlier alleged that Daniel refused to perform because he was not wearing his gold chain.

Uwa said he paid the singer $60,000 to perform at the show.

“He only said the airline didn’t bring his bag. That is why he could not perform because his gold chain is not there and he had a gold chain on his neck. He wanted everything,” he said.

“I bought him different clothes but he said just because the airline didn’t bring one of his bags, he cannot perform without his gold on his neck.”

ASUU declares ongoing examinations at Kaduna University illegal, seeks cancellation

The Kaduna State University’s (KASU) current examinations have been deemed to be in breach of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of examinations in academic institutions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

By way of a statement released by the Kano Zone, the union made its position clear, arguing that any examinations completed as part of the existing arrangement must be redone to maintain the integrity of the procedure.

On August 2, KASU resumed academic operations that had been suspended on February 14 when its academic staff joined a national strike called by the ASUU national leadership in response to unmet demands made to the government.

Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, had already threatened to fire all lecturers who refused to return to class, claiming there was no dispute between them.

Abia women protest doctor’s continued detention nine weeks after his kidnapping.

In Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, women of the Ahia Asa, Umuopara clan yesterday protested the ongoing arrest of their son, Professor Uwadinachi Iweha.
There are concerns for Iweha’s safety after he was abducted in front of his home and hasn’t been seen since.

The women demanded his unconditional release and expressed concern for his safety as they condemned the state’s recent wave of kidnappings.

Dame Victory Asomugha spoke on behalf of Mrs. Sally Ukauwa, the group’s chairwoman, who stated they were no longer at ease. Nine weeks after their illustrious son was kidnapped, nothing had been done to save him.

“The women in the neighborhood will no longer put up with the doctor’s continuous confinement to the kidnappers’ cave,” she warned in her plea for immediate action to free him.

“Our son left his house to worship God. They called him from the church. He returned home, and to this day, we have not seen him,” she claimed.

“We are also calling on government and security agencies to expedient action for his release.”

Controversy over PDP House of Reps ticket in Imo

Aloysius Igwe, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the House of Representatives in Imo State, has filed a lawsuit against the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the purported use of his name in place of the elected candidate for his constituency.

According to Mr. Igwe, he stood for office and won the party primary for the state’s Oru East-Orsu-Orlu federal constituency; however, a new primary was held, and Kinglsey Onyegbula, a rival candidate, won.

Between May 25 and 26, the PDP held its primary for the House of Representatives in the district, where five candidates vied for the ticket.

Mr. Igwe received 39 votes in the process, which was overseen by INEC, defeating Kingsley Onyegbula, who received 36 votes, as his closest competitor.

However, despite INEC independently recognizing Mr. Igwe as the primary victor, they did not accept him as a candidate.

On June 3, there were rumors that a prominent PDP official was planning to help Mr. Onyegbula, a competitor who lost the election, organize a new primary to reverse the results of the previous one.

As predicted, a second PDP primary for the same Oru East-Orsu-Orlu Federal Constituency was held on June 5, but Mr. Igwe was not told.

According to reports, Mr. Onyegbula was named the victor of the new primary.

Despite not objecting to Mr. Igwe’s selection as the party’s candidate following the election on May 26, Mr. Onyegbula later submitted an appeal to the PDP’s Imo State National Assembly Electoral Appeal Panel.

INEC speaks on documents allegedly altered in favour of Lawan, Akpabio

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied tampering with election records to favor Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President, and Godswill Akpabio, a former Niger Delta Affairs minister.

After failing to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination for 2023, Lawan and Akpabio have been vying for the party’s senatorial nominations for the Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial Districts, respectively.

This was despite the fact that Bashir Machina and Udom Ekpoudom had won the INEC-conducted primary elections in their respective senatorial zones.

“INEC lacks the authority to veto names submitted by political parties. Parties have sole authority over primaries. In a report, Mr. Igini stated that INEC’s role was limited to monitoring the primaries to ensure they adhered to their own rules, the Electoral Act, and the Constitution.

To “accommodate” Lawan and Akpabio, according to a media source on Tuesday, INEC had backdated Certified True Copies of reports from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.

There are no reports of a comparable election that was held in Yobe and won by Mr. Machina.

The names of Lawan and Akpabio, who did not take part in the elections, were instead given to the commission as candidates, despite Bashir Machina and Udom Ekpoudom having emerged as contenders in the primaries overseen by INEC officials in their respective senatorial zones.

The Akwa-Ibom INEC REC, Mike Igini, defended the approval of names, but the court now has the final say.

However, in a statement released on Tuesday by Festus Okoye, INEC’s spokesperson, the body denied altering or certifying any documents in favor of the two APC leaders.

Former Manchester United player, Ryan Giggs, charged with headbutting former girlfriend

Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs has been charged with assault for headbutting his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

The Manchester United great, according to Ms. Greville, aggressively headbutted her in the face, causing her to bleed.

The trial for the case started on Monday in Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

After being challenged by his ex-girlfriend about his repeated infidelity, Ryan Giggs grabbed her by the shoulders and headbutted her.

Kate Greville, a PR executive, claimed that before the alleged assault in November 2020, she had discovered that he had “full-on relationships” with eight different women while they were dating.

She claimed that she made the decision to leave him after finding communications “going back years” on the former Manchester United footballer’s iPad.

Ms. Greville stated she had surreptitiously applied for a flat and intended to “escape” from Giggs’ house in Worsley, Greater Manchester, where she had stayed since the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, while giving testimony before Manchester Crown Court from behind a curtain.

On November 1, she went to Manchester’s Stock Exchange Hotel with 48-year-old Giggs, which is a joint property of the defendant and fellow ex-football player Gary Neville.

But she said that after telling Giggs about a man who had previously asked her out for a drink, there was a fight over supper at the restaurant.

She told the court: “I said to this guy, ‘I can’t believe you have asked me out. You have a girlfriend’.”

Asked how Giggs responded, she said: “It was, ‘Why didn’t you say you had a boyfriend?’ He was angry. He kept having a go at me. He wanted me to agree with him. I was not prepared to do that. I stood up for myself.”

They had intended to spend the night in their hotel, and according to her, he “stormed out” and up to their room.

The 36-year-old Ms. Greville claimed that she lingered at the table and felt “a little uncomfortable” before going up to the hotel room.

She said: “He had packed up all of my things and said he wanted me to get out.

“He was basically saying he was finishing with me and he didn’t want anything more to do with me.

“I knew everything that he had done.

“I had the proof for the first time ever because he had always managed to convince me the whole thing was in my head and I was going crazy.

“I showed him some of the messages I had seen.

“I had taken screenshots, there was a lot.

“He said what I was saying was not true.

“I said ‘it’s there, you can’t deny it anymore’.

“Then he got in my face and screamed and told me to get out.

“He was very drunk and very angry.”

She said she collected her belongings and called for an Uber to Giggs’ address where her sister, Emma, was looking after their golden retriever puppy Mac.

Ms. Greville said she phoned her and asked her to “get my stuff and the dog” into her car.

She returned and was upstairs packing before 10 to 15 minutes later she saw lights outside as Giggs arrived and started unloading her belongings in bin bags from her car at the front of the house, she said.

The pair then grappled over Ms. Greville’s phone in the hallway of the house and inside an adjacent utility room, the court heard.

Ms Greville continued: “He pushed me backwards, I ended up being on my back in the utility room.

“I was on my back on the floor with my phone in my hand.

“Ryan was on top of me.

“He’s pinning me down on the floor and trying to reach for the phone in my hand.

“I was trying to do everything I could to get him off me. I was shouting my sister for help, ‘Get him off me.”‘

Ms. Greville said Emma grabbed Giggs by the waist to pull him off but he pushed his arm back to try to get her off him and it is claimed he had hit her in the jaw.

Giggs managed to grab Ms. Greville’s phone, pushing her head into the floor as he got off her, she said.

Ms. Greville said Giggs told her he had called the police and was going to tell the officers Ms Greville had attacked him and was a “psycho”.

Ms. Greville said: “I said ‘I’m glad the police are coming because you attacked me and I will tell them what happened’.

“That’s when he came towards me and headbutted me in my face.

“He just came at me, grabbed me by my shoulders and headbutted me in my face.

“I said, ‘I can’t believe you have just done that. I was in shock. I fell backwards, my lip instantly swelled so I put my hands to my mouth. I could taste the blood.

“I was just in shock.

“All the other times he had hurt me, this was different. This was with real intent. He really wanted to hurt me.”

Ms. Greville said Giggs then said to her: “You need to think about this, Kate.

“This will ruin me and it will ruin you.

“Think about my job, think about my career, think about my kids.

“And I said, ‘Well, you shouldn’t have done it, then’.”

Police attended and Giggs was arrested.

Giggs denies attacking Ms. Greville, causing her actual bodily damage, and common assault on her younger sister between August 2017 and November 2020. He also denies employing controlling and coercive behavior on her.

On Wednesday, Ms. Greville will offer more testimony.

Another seven hostages, including a family of six and a woman, were freed by the terrorists that assaulted the AK-9 Abuja-Kaduna train passengers on March 28.

The names of the six members of the released family are Abdubakar Idris Garba, his wife Maryam Abubakar Bobo, and their eldest child, 10-year-old Ibrahim Abubakar Garba.

Others include Zainab Abubakar Garba, the youngest, who is just one and a half years old, Imran Abubakar Garba, who is five, and Fatima Abubakar Garba, who is seven.

Abubakar Idris Garba, a National Assembly Service Commission staff member, is the son of a former Military Administrator of Kano and Benue States.

A 60-year-old lady named Hajia Aisha Hassan was also released, allegedly as a result of lately deteriorating life-threatening health issues.

Despite withdrawing as a mediator, Tukur Mamu, Publisher of the Kaduna-based Desert Herald, and Media Consultant to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a contentious Islamic cleric, told journalists in Kaduna that the seven captives had been freed.

According to Mamu, the seven were freed as a result of Gumi, his principal, stepping in.

Apparently troubled by the beating of the captives, Gumi reportedly reached out to the terrorists for the first time in the four months since the abduction story began, asking them to “consider the release of the poor children and their innocent parents.”

Mamu, on the other hand, stated that the family of six was rescued thanks to the efforts of Sheikh Gumi and the backing of a serving Senator from the North.

The terrorists have continued to free the hostages who had been held captive for more than four months.

Following the release of the fifth group of seven hostages on Wednesday, the terrorists still have 28 captives after releasing 33 hostages.

Tuface and his Baby Mamas: An Inquisition into Nigeria’s Patriarchal System

About Tuface Idibia

Innocent “Tuface” Idibia is a name that’s synonymous with African music royalty.

He first rose to fame as a member and lead vocalist in the band “Plantashun Boiz”, who were notable for ushering in an era of unrivaled pop music appeal for mainstream audiences.

No sooner had the band disbanded in 2004, did Tuface release his debut album, from which the record-breaking “African Queen” took the entire world by storm. Thus, ushering in a new wave of awareness and reverence for Nigerian music amongst Africans on the continent and in the diaspora, and cementing Tuface’s place amongst the stars.

The Baby Mama Drama

In what we hoped would be a meteoric rise to global prominence, began a slew of inconsequential baby mama accumulations, holding up a mirror to Nigeria’s patriarchal bias, in what we would later learn was against the promise he made to then girlfriend and now wife, Anne Macaulay Idibia.

The first incident that hit the airwaves was with Sumbo Ajaba, who met Tuface while she was an undergraduate at Yaba College of Technology.

She would later get impregnated by the star and pin the child on another man, whom she later married. It must have been a surprise to all parties when the child was born and bore a strong resemblance to Tuface.

Tuface then proceeded to welcome this woman into his home and, with her, fathered another child.

However, in 2009, the marriage crashed after news of him impregnating another woman hit the airwaves again.

According to reports, while Tuface was out of the country for work, she packed her belongings and moved out of his house.

Next up was the daughter of billionaire businessman and chairman of Poatson Group of companies, Chief Jide Adeniyi, whom he met while she was allegedly married.

We first heard of his relationship with “Pero” in 2006. The relationship began even while he still lived and fathered a child with Sumbo.

Pero reportedly left her then-husband and decided to become Tuface’s lover, as he fathered two more children with her.

One would think there would be standards to hold him accountable for his actions, but his career, appearances, and endorsements seemed to still climb, as Nigerians reveled in the “Na so men are” narrative that filled every commentator’s lips as they paraded the media airwaves.

Pero, however, would later leave the country in 2012 after Tuface proposed to his long-time girlfriend while reportedly still in a relationship with her.

Then cue in Annie, who Tuface featured in his African Queen music video alongside Yvonne Jegede. The duo later went on to make their relationship official in 2008. They got engaged in 2012 and got married in 2013 as he fathered two children with her.

A New Twist

In new reports, the artist is said to have gotten another woman, who is reportedly a banker, pregnant.

This report comes after a winded apology was released on his social media platform, as he clearly called himself and his supporters out for the privilege he has so graciously enjoyed.

The artist has seen responses like ‘Nobody Holy pass’, ‘We dey for you, nothing dey happen’, ‘Forever and ever’ to his recent apology.

Nigeria, Patriarchy, and Double Standards

We seem to remember that not so long ago, news of Mercy Aigbe’s involvement with a married man came with a lot of backlash from Nigerians.

We also recall Tiwa Savages’ sex tape, about which she was bullied till it was released, and the teeming backlash that came from that.

We saw men demand better-behaved women who uphold good societal values and act exemplarily.

We have seen women slut-shamed, belittled, and insulted; when they decide to speak up, they are shut down by intrepid patriarchal bigots.

We wonder if Nigerians will ever hold the same standards against a man who, in his own words, has caused great embarrassment to his wife, family, and children.

Or will this, as usual, be a typification of the man’s world we live in where Tuface, like other men, go about their lives from moments like this, unscathed by the hurt they have caused and the shame they have forced their families to carry?

Even now, Nigeria’s patriarchy screams in vitriol at Annie, who, despite the numerous baby mama incidents over the years, has remained faithful to this one man.

One would say that she should demand more for herself, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Annie Idibia has made it very clear that her heart wants Tuface.

The onus falls on Tuface to do better. Words are no longer enough as this slew of baby mamas is becoming a recurring theme in the couple’s relationship.

Patriarchy creates a vacuum in which men can no longer be held accountable. Accountability fuels the world we wish to see.

Accountability and moral uprightness should not be demanded from women alone. It is a collective societal function.

The quicker Nigerians recognize this, the sooner our country evolves from a place where women are undermined and treated unfairly to a nation where everyone is treated justly and with respect.
