The 2015 AMVCAs didn’t disappoint on Saturday night with the likes of  Tina Fey and George Clooney taking center stage in Hollywood.

IK Osakiduwa and co-host Vimbai were in charge for the night and a couple of other things we sort out to be the two best moments of the awards.

Amaka Igwe Honorarium

Late iconic Nollywood writer, producer and director, Amaka Igwe was honored with the 2015 AMVCA for the category of Industry Merit Award and the presentation was touching. Her life legacy was put on full display with her achievements over time in the industry leaving most of us who understood what impact the works of her hands has had in our lives, emotional.

Presenting the award, industry veteran whose breakthrough was as a result of the late icon, Richard Mofe Damijo paid tribute to her with a few words celebrating her as a pioneer contributor to filmmaking in Nigeria.

It was more graceful and a standing ovation when, to receive the award on behalf of his late wife, Charles Igwe said all his wife ever wanted to do was to give her best.

He then thanked everyone for acknowledging that she did give her best.

Blossom Chukwujekwu’s promise to his mother

“Thank you Jesus” were his first words when he got up the stage. It may not sound as unique but what he said after was what made the crowd go ‘aww’ and what put him on this list. The actor explained that he promised his mother that that was the first thing he would say if he wins the award for the category he was nominated for and which he did.

The actor had his breakthrough into the industry with the movie, Flower Girl, and since then it has been non-stop for him. We were certainly surprised but glad he bagged the award for Best Supporting Actor, Knocking on Heaven’s door.

Festus Keyamo doesn’t trust the Service Chiefs, he believes they’re profiting from insurgency

A Human Rights Lawyer, Festus Keyamo, on Saturday has accused Service Chiefs in the country of profiting from the current insurgency raging in the North-eastern part of the country.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Summit in Ado Ekiti, he said, with the way the Service Chiefs were prosecuting the war against insurgency, it was clear that they were profiting from it.

“At a time, they lied that Boko Haram had agreed to a ceasefire truce, only for them to strike almost the second day. This goes to tell you that Jonathan actually ordered the announcement of the ceasefire. They later flew another kite that the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau had been killed. But only a week ago, Jonathan said Shekau must be arrested before elections. Then, Nigerians must ask them, which Shekau did they kill the other time?” Keyamo asked.

He also said the reason the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were allegedly plotting to derail the electoral process was because they were afraid of being sent to jail by the APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

He described as a national disgrace, the recapturing of the territories seized by Boko Haram insurgents by Chadian soldiers, saying this speaks volume of the level of the rot in the Nigerian Army.

Keyamo said most of the consistent critics of Buhari were those with criminal records of corruption, urging Nigerian voters to reject them in the coming elections in the interest of the nation.

#YNaijaOnTheScene: That one thing the AMVCAs can’t seem to get right

Two years into the show and AMVCA has managed to gather an interested crowd en mass, but the irony of that is so soon would they lose it because these lot were only pulled into interest by a factor. If you want to keep a crowd going you must come up with new antics everytime. It’s how comedy shows do it, it is how most awards do it.

That is why with every edition there is something new to look forward to, be it from the host, to the performance to the choice of presenters and performers. And that is one thing the organisers of AMVCA haven’t been able to figure out.

Every year, since its inception, the show has always been of the same format, script. Everything goes by the book. The only one interesting and successful stereotype break the show has had is its ability to stick to time. Once they declare it is going to begin for a certain hour, they ain’t messing around. They would and would equally finish at the hour the show was slated to end. A huge achievement I must add that has been consistent for the past three years and one that is highly commendable. But you see, it doesn’t serve any good if people can’t wait to get out even if they know it would end early enough to still make it home. Why? Because the show is boring.

The AMVCAs lack creativity. From the invites to the organisaton of the show, it is the same thing that happens, the same format for the show to be run. I for one was hoping they would take a cue from the international counterparts. Take for instance the Oscars. Neil Patrick Harris was the one that sold it for me and why I put key interest into seeing the antics that would be pulled by him during the show and he proved it- especially when he came out with just his underwear. The hosts for AMVCA do the same damn thing every year- stand at the corner of the stage, make lame jokes and change clothes. Even the Golden Globes that had two women were far better than what we were dished last night by Vimbai and IK.

There was no special perfomance during the show. Just to state before an excuse arises that the show is live and therefore timed, The Channel O Music Video Awards is equally timed and televised live for the South African audience, they start early, same as the AMVCAs and they end just when they say they would and yet they boast of one of the best perfomances during an award show. It is all about planning and having the right creative team to come up with something catchy every edition.

I heard one person openly say “the show is boring I didn’t even want to watch it on TV much less come for the event.”

The stage setting, carriage, everything is just the same.

Take a cue from a Dare Art-Alade’s ‘love like a movie’ show. Since I saw women suspended from the ceiling as part of the performance for the night and for three consecutive years that he comes up with such surprises, I’ve been glued to the expectations of further editions because I know it would be different.

The organisers of AMVCA need to put a little more effort into the production of the show so as to keep their audience entertained or else they lose them and that also means you don’t give a hoot about what their audience wants or expects. It’s either their way or the highway.

Bring something different to the show- let’s see a Neil Patrick Harris or a Tina Fey as host for the next edition or better collaborated performances and not the one the Mavin crew came to mock us with or you know, something different!

Until then, the AMVCAs is boring to say the least. For time management though, A for effort.

How did a former VC become a professor without attending secondary school? He tells Punch a story

For someone who never attended a regular secondary school to eventually become a Professor, is no small feat.

Former acting Vice-Chancellor of the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Prof. Adekunle Adeniran, is the man with the impressive profile.

In a new interview with Punch Newspapers, he revealed that he taught himself almost everything he knows today and other things:

Read:

“I was born in 1935 and like the life of most Ibadan people of my generation; life for me began in the rural area. My grandfather moved out of Ibadan central to settle in Ogeye village in Lagelu council area of the city.

Interestingly, I did not attend any regular or conventional secondary school at all. I read at home on my own. My first formal education ended in standard six which my parents were proud of. I became an untrained teacher at a Methodist school in Lerin which is now in Ogun State. I also taught at St. Luke’s Primary School, Offa-Igbo. In 1955, I was admitted into St. Luke’s Teacher Training College where I obtained Grade Three and later Grade Two which was called Higher Elementary certificates.

In between the two certificates, I passed the London General Certificate of Education and later wrote the Advanced Level Examination which qualified me to become a student of the University of Ibadan in September 1963. I did a degree in English and graduated in June 1966. Fortune smiled on me because in November of the same year of graduation, I was given a job as graduate trainee in UI. It afforded me to study more. I went to the University of Leeds in England and returned in 1966 to do my doctorate degree in UI. I retired in 2005 as a professor. I became a professor in 1992.”

‘Shame! Shame! Shame!,’ says Tinubu’s wife to the PDP

Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorned wrath.. believe that.

It is official that in this electioneering season, it is a free for all, everyone is involved and the gloves are off.

No pun intended, but even the most unlikely politicians are taking verbal political swipes. Things have gotten very personal and direct attacks have never been in such an abundant supply.

Back to the woman’s fury- Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Bola Tinubu, National leader of the APC, has described President Jonathan’s manner of leadership as shameful.

During an APC rally on Saturday, Mrs Tinubu told Punch Newspapers, that it is a ‘shame shame shame’.

Read her words:

“It is the month of March. Here, we are ready for a change in the way this country is being run. Everyone on the side of change has to join the movement. For those who have yet to make up their minds, now is the time. And I say to the Peoples Democratic Party: Shame! Shame! Shame! Shame for the mess they have turned this country into.”

“If the Chibok girls are not rescued, you know who to blame… the APC”

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO) on Saturday called on Nigerians to hold the All Progressives Congress (APC), its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State and the party’s National Publicity Director, Lai Mohammed, responsible if the abducted Chibok schoolgirls are not rescued.

This was as it ridiculed the leadership of the APC over what it described as a flopped one-million-man-march organised in Lagos, claiming that only 10,000 persons attended the programme which is an indication that the APC and its National Leader, Bola Tinubu, are no longer in control of Lagos State.

The PDP Campaign was reacting to a statement issued by the APC yesterday, which described comments by President Goodluck Jonathan that the abducted girls are still alive if not the sect would have displayed their bodies to prove their death as callous, morbid and insensitive.

But speaking through its Director of Media and Publicity, Femi Fani-Kayode, PDPPCO noted that the APC and its leaders were working against the recovery of the girls, saying that while many Nigerians were happy with the efforts of the military and Jonathan as well as the successes recorded so far, the opposition party was not happy.

“Whilst the majority of Nigerians are overjoyed by the fact that the President has given us hope by saying that the girls are still alive, Lai Mohammed and the APC are not happy. The truth is that they do not want those girls to be found and neither do they care about their welfare or their safety. We say this because this was a man, and a party that complained and protested at the fact that Boko Haram was proscribed by the Federal Government last year. Lai Mohammed proclaimed that the proscription was unjust and unconstitutional. We have always believed that Buhari, Lai Mohammed, Governor Shettima and the APC know far more about the whereabouts of the Chibok girls and the activities of Boko Haram than they have cared to admit. Let it be clearly understood that if anything happens to those girls and if they are not produced at the soonest, we will hold Lai Mohammed, Buhari and the APC responsible,” Fani-Kayode said.

“The fact that what the APC boasted would be a one-million-man march could only attract about 10,000 persons is a reflection of the pitiful state of delusion that they are suffering from. They have lost touch with reality and with the people of the state over whom they have maintained a wicked and ungodly economic and political stranglehold for all of 16 years. But the people of Lagos have now seen through their deception and have decided to reject them at the polls this time round. The Lagos people have amply demonstrated their anger against the APC and its leader. It is interesting to read that Tinubu asked the people at the flopped march to march for their freedom. I agree with him and the people will obey him by freeing themselves on April 11 from the political and economic bondage into which Tinubu has put them since 1999,” he added.

To match Interview NIGERIA-ELECTION/

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Committee, Attahiru Jega alongside the nation’s security chiefs on Saturday held a closed door meeting with members of the monitoring committee of the Abuja Peace Accord.

The meeting which went into tea break after several hours saw the INEC chairman, the Chief of Defence Staff, AVM Alex Badeh and the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba leave the venue as their security aides barred journalists from getting close to them.

Also the chairman of the committee, Abdulsalam Abubakar; the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onayeikan; the Anglican Primate, Nicholas Okoh and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, all left the hall for other members to brief the press.

Justice Rose Ukeje, Vanguard Newspaper publisher Sam Amuka and the director of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, Osita Osita, later briefed the press and disclosed that the INEC chairman and the service chiefs gave their full assurances that the rescheduled elections would hold as planned.

According to them, the committee was able to extract from the defence chief his assurance that the military has addressed most of the security challenges especially in the northeast.

They also stated that the Jega confirmed that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) has attained 80 per cent collect which he said has met the constitutional requirement. According to the INEC, most people who had not collected their cards may fall into the category of dead, displaced or relocated persons.

“This is the fourth meeting of the committee. At today’s meeting the following eminent persons briefed the committee: the INEC chairman, the chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector General of Police and they said that there is no fear and there will be a violence free and credible election and also that there is no fear of a further adjournment of the election because there is no room for that in the constitution,” Ukeje said.

Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan

Currently named Nollywood’s biggest and most recognised party, the AMVCA’s for the third time, lived up to its new nickname as the event brought together the best in TV and film alike, both old and new, experts and upcoming under one roof to know their fate- for those anticipating but first, all with access to an open bar.

The big night saw big hitters such as October 1, A Place In The Stars and The Meeting walk away with honors.

We bring to you the wins, shocking and memorable moment from the awards.

- A Place in the Stars by Steve Gukas beat Kunle Afolayan‘s October 1 to the coveted Best Movie (Drama) award and gladly too. The movie, released in 2014 like Kunle’s movie which was widely expected to win the award, is a much talked about feature film starring a number of Nollywood popular names and emerging talents. But that wasn’t the only win for the movie and its director. Even if it doesn’t cover for the cost of making the movie, in addition to the award, Steve got N1m cash prize and 6 months free supply of drinks from sponsors, Amstel Malta.

– However, even if it was beaten in that category, there was a place in the stars for award-winning Nollywood filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan’s October 1. It was the biggest winner at the awards with 9 awards in total for the Best Director award as well as the prize for overall Best Movie for his 2014, Best Makeup Artiste, Best Writer Drama, Best Sound Editing, Best Lighting Designer, Best Actress in a Drama and others.

OC Ukeje

OC Ukeje

- OC Ukeje is the best actor drama category as it should be. He has had quite a year featuring in major lead roles in hit movies.

– New comer, Femi Jacobs surely didn’t expect his win but he was anticipating one with Frank Donga fast on the lead to clinch it. It was shocker to most but him as he received his award for Best Actor in a Comedy and gave a rather confident and not competent speech which included him prophesying love to Rita Dominic.

- Psquare always gets the last laugh in a bad way. The duo were slated to perform last- after the show had ended. This isn’t the first time this is happening that they would be performing while guests are taking their live. Sometimes it works for them, other times, maybe it isn’t such a food idea.

– When Linda Ejiofor mounted the stage to give her speech it sounded like she ran from outside into the hall and onto the stage to receive her award for best supporting actress. Not that we mind but the panting was a little too distracting.

- Imoh Umoren has said his win for the best new media- online would definitely make him charge more now despite the fact that he wasn’t expecting a win. He is most happy his family got to witness their own climb the stage to bag an award.

– So a lot of people were pissed at the Mavin crew for their somewhat lackadaisical performance at the awards. The crew performed without Tiwa Savage, who is away in Uganda at the moment as well as Dr Sid, the audience felt like they had been cheated in that regard.

- Fathia Balogun banished stereotype when she declared in her speech that she isn’t Yoruba despite having received an award for best indigenous language- Yoruba.

Chimamanda Adichie, Joy Isi Bewaji, Tola Sarumi… look who else made the #YNaijaPowerList for Arts & Culture

Chimamanda

Chimamanda Adichie

As the annual #YNaijaPowerList enters its 4th year, we bring you the most influential young Nigerians under 40 who are tackling the severely underfunded culture space and making something out of nothing. From the most influential author alive to the editor of the imprint that publishes her work locally, culture critics to culture enthusiasts, these young names have taken up the onerous task of preserving our heritage. And they make it all seem like fun too.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The most important- and influential- Nigerian writer working today is also one of the most controversial. Adichie spent much of last year making headlines while promoting her latest novel, Americanah. She was nominated for a Grammy award for her guest appearance on Beyonce’s self-titled album and with her essays and interviews, continues to exert a dominant force on the culture. She will serve as co-curator of this year’s PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature in New York City and will deliver the festival’s closing address

Eghosa Imasuen

With recent buzzed about titles by president Olusegun Obasanjo and Chude Jideonwo joining its impressive canon, Farafina is clearly the most important force in Nigeria’s publishing scene – almost single-handedly reawakening the sector, and then sustaining it through its parent company Kachifo, alongside imprints like Prestige and Kamsi. Also home to the likes of Chimamanda (who needs no surname), and Sefi Atta, Farafina is run, managed and kept at optimum by medical doctor, father, husband and author of Fine Boy.

Joy Isi Bewaji

When it comes to rocking the culture, there is probably nothing that Joy Isi Bewaji cannot do- or hasn’t done. An author (Eko dialogue, What pain may bring), television host (Your view), columnist (This Day, Sabinews.com) and public relations practitioner, her influence spans television, radio and new media. In December 2014, she successfully curated #ThisArtIsEnough, an afternoon of performance, readings, art, spoken word and dance and is always on the lookout for opportunities for creatives to come together and advance their craft.

Lala Akindoju (2)

Lala Akindoju

Lala Akindoju

The modern day queen of stage made a huge play for the big screen when she grabbed her first lead role in none other than Tunde Kelani’s sickle cell advocacy flick, Dazzling Mirage. With her Make it Happen production outfit, Akindoju gathered seasoned vets like Joke Silva, Kate Henshaw and Iretiola Doyle for a star studded revival of Professor Ahmed Yerima’s dramedy, The Wives. She also continues to provide a platform for up and comers to express their creativity with her Open Mic events and serves as a casting director on Ndani’s web series, Gidi up.

Lola Shoneyin

The author of The Secret lives of Baba Segi’s wives may be just beyond the age limit for this series, but her work with the Ake Book festival, an annual celebration of literature, dance and music has had a healthy impact on the creative industry. Writers and their hangers on look forward to Ake season with all the excitement of Hollywood’s awards season. Last year’s event, held in the hometown of the bard, Wole Soyinka- who also happens to be her in-law- attracted writers from home and abroad. Even the politicians; Olusegun Obasanjo and Rotimi Amaechi weren’t left out of the fun. It is impossible to do the work that Soneyin does and not stay forever young

Lydia Sobogun

CEO of Gbagyichild entertainment and convener of Taruwa, a cult favourite hub for art lovers in the purest, undiluted form. Every session of Taruwa offers laughter, music, poetry, drama and this began from the founder’s need to provide a stage for the expression of art. Taruwa’s monthly sessions have also served as the priming pad for superstar artistes like M.I and Bez Idakula. Sobogun’s Gbagyichild also publishes Taruwa magazine and last year held the second season of the Taruwa festival, a showcase of the best in art and culture. Sobogun is fun to hang out but knows how to look after the business end.

Ojoma Ochai

Ochai is the director of the British Council’s Arts and creative industry programme in Nigeria. In this capacity, she develops policies and creates capacity that will showcase Nigeria’s creative, cultural and artistic tendencies. She works on the council’s relationships with states and the federal government to develop a cultural environment that ensures that creative ideas among young people thrive and is a past nominee for The Future Awards prestigious Young Person of the Year prize.

Osagie Alonge

Osagie Alonge

Osagie Alonge

While working as a journalist for Thenetng.com, Osagie Alonge was one of the paper’s brightest stars, assiduously covering the entertainment business and churning out reviews, reports and exclusives. He moved to newly established The Pulse and his energy has not wavered one bit. His new web series The Truth actually attempts to dig underneath the surface and fearlessly reveal what lies beneath, not minding whose ox is gored. If Alonge’s peers had half of his passion, the entertainment industry would be better covered.

Tola Sarumi

Love her or hate her, agree with her often polarising album reviews or embrace them as truth, none can dispute the fact that this music head and occasional ruffler of feathers knows her onions. From her perch as a contributor to Africa’s biggest music site, notjustok.com, Sarumi feels the pulse of the industry people with her music review posts and doesn’t hesitate to let her feelings be known as lucidly as possible.

Wana Udobang

An On air personality and culture connoisseur, Wana Udobang loves to talk. She loves the radio. She loves to write too. There are words that describe her many interests; Broadcaster (Inspiration FM), creative writer (Huffington Post), spoken word poet, blogger, television host (Airtel’s Touching lives). An artiste’s artiste, Ms Udobang’s warm fuzzy tough love relationship with audiences made her the perfect voice to replace host Chaz B on the soar away program Sharing Life Issues and her non-judgemental approach to dealing with callers problems has endeared her to a lot more listeners.

It wasn’t a surprise when Susan Peters’ outfit landed on many worst dressed lists.

However, the actress is proud of her look by celebrity stylist, Toyin Lawani. According to her, only those with high fashion sense can understand it.

She took to Instagram moments ago to write this:

“They thought they could bury us,they didnt know we are seeds…#Doroisityourmoney?I AM NOT CREATED TO BLEND IN… I AM CREATED TO STAND OUT!!! IF THE KITCHEN IS TOO HOT MBOK EXIT THE BUILDING.Only people with High Fashion Sense Can Understand. Still thanking my glam squad @tiannahsplacempire @bibyonce @ugomakeme God go bless una plenty … to everyone supporting the ministry GGMYABIJN Amen. Who can hurt those who have God’s covering? She further told some journalists at the event thus:

“I went to see my stylist and she showed me a picture. I kinda liked what I saw, so I told her I’d to go for it. I wanted to look different. A dress that would make me outstanding, you know I am a very daring woman. That’s how we came up with this and I’m enjoying every bit of it.”

You’ve heard her, if you don’t like the look, you don’t have an idea what fashion is.

Were Yoruba traditional rulers rendering prayers or curses for Jonathan?

$

by Kolapo Olapoju

There is a little misunderstanding and apparent confusion on social media and beyond – about the picture which shows some Yoruba monarchs surrounding President Goodluck Jonathan.

On Saturday, March 7, President Goodluck Jonathan, was at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

Following the Ooni’s directive, President Jonathan knelt down and the Yoruba traditional rulers present formed a circle around him, and stretched out their staff of authority, which is called “Opa Ase”, in Yoruba tradition.

Although it is believed that the traditional rulers were praying for the President, however, there is one little problem- the ‘Opa Ase’ serves two purposes; prayers and curses.

As a result of this fact, many are of the opinion that the rulers could as well be offering curses for the President, while others insist that he was being prayed for.

As it stands, no one seems to be definitely certain about what they were really saying in the photo.

Until their voices can be audibly heard, the debate on the matter will persist, but in the meantime, we’ll remain on the fence.

The Army will really try 4 Colonels and a General || Should we be impressed?

When the Nigerian Army declared its intention to court-martial some senior officers, many took it with a pinch of salt, a sentiment that was shared several Nigerians.

With several soldiers having gone through the court martial process for mutiny, dereliction of duty and other offences in the war against Boko Haram, only a few envisaged the likelihood of their superiors suffering the same fate.

But alas, the few may be right after all, as the military authorities will today, Monday, March 9, commence the trial of a Brigadier General, four colonels, seven Lt. Cols, and 10 other officers of the Nigerian Army in Lagos.

The soldiers are being tried for alleged negligence, cowardly behaviour, failure to perform military duty, negligent performance of military duties other offences relating to service property and complicity in the invasion of the 21 Artillery Brigade, Bama, by Boko Haram insurgents on September 2, 2014.

According to Punch newspapers, 23 Army officers would be prosecuted for various military offences under the 81 Division, GCM, Lagos, scheduled for inauguration at the Ikeja Cantonment today.

The General Court Martial will be presided over by Maj. Gen. S.D Aliyu.

If found guilty, those on trial for cowardly behaviour will get the death penalty while other offences attract nothing less than two years imprisonment.

Alibaba aired his annoyance at some fashion journalists who said his attire was not glamorous enough for the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards on Saturday, March 7.

Read below his Instagram post:

Trust you had a great weekend. I did. And had been looking forward to sharing something with you. So, I have also Been looking for a clear picture of me that was taken at the #AMVCA, but it’s not about the picture itself. It was about someone who claims to be a Fashion Critic…… who made a comment that I thought I should harp on.

She said, “Bros, didn’t you get the invite? It said ‘black tie’ “… herself and a few of her fashion buffs had a laugh at my expense. So I let the laugh settle down and I asked, did you read the part that said “black tie or Glamorous?” I then saw one of them quickly bring her card holder invite holder out, read the dress code portion and shoved it back in the case. The dumbest of the four, who is also on television, said something like, but this is not glamorous.

So I pointed at Kunle Afolayan, who was decked in AGBADA. And she was sucked in to my trick. “Eheeeeen! That is glamorous.” Her cronies agreed. So I dropped my joker. ‘Really? So it’s only the traditional attire from the YORUBA or Hausa speaking part of Nigeria that is glamorous? Is that what you were taught in school?

Or is that the position of your media house? Or is that all your knowledge about fashion availed you? May be you are TRIBALISTIC. May be you think AFRICANS must look like a white man to be glamorous! May be you have no values! By the way, I thought this was an AFRICAN magic viewers’ choice awards (notice the capital letters)? At this point, 2 of them started that line that signals they had gotten the message… “Bros you are correct, but you know we were just teasing you. HABA!

Can’t you take a joke?” My point was made and I walked off. The problem we have in this country is not totally our government’s failures. It is also the failure of many of us to know what is important to us as AFRICANS and what we should value in our culture. ATTIRE for journalist WEY no recognize glamorous ATTIRE. As for any journalist that thinks dressing in my traditional outfit meant for special occasions is not glamorous, please check a dictionary and revert” he concluded.

It’s Africa Magic, come on! Where did the magic go? – Read Charles Novia’s critique of AMVCA 2015

Movie director, Charles Novia has given a bit by bit account of how the last AMVCA event went.

According to the movie producer, the much-talked event lacked thrills and glitters.

Hear him:

”At 21:52 pm CAT, when IK Osakioduwa and Vimbai, hosts of the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, had signed off from the show and brought in P Square, I was left scratching my head a bit as I walked out slowly out of the hall with some of the invited guests.

I was puzzled. There was something about this year’s AMVCA which lacked the punch the last two editions had. I couldn’t place my finger on it and it kept nagging me all night as I played the event over and over in my mind.
You see, I have attended lots of high-profile events and the AMVCA is one I always look forward to attending, not just as a filmmaker but also as a reviewer and this year’s was no exception.
And the chaps at MNET have told me a number of times that my annual reviews are read sometimes in post-event meetings and no matter how scathing the reviews might be in some areas, they good-naturedly take the corrections and plan to plug loopholes for the next edition.
And so, I decided to understand more of the behind-the-scenes planning of the AMVCA this year. A day before the event, I silently sneaked into the hall at Eko Hotels and Suites, where I watched the professional crew rehearse both the presenters and the host and hostess, painstakingly. No one really noticed me in the hall and the attention to detail during the rehearsals was impressive.
I only spent thirty minutes in the hall but I appreciated the efforts put in by the crew. And so, the evening of the show came upon us all. And walking on the red carpet to the main hall, one had to appreciate the fashion sense on display. I can bet that the fashion  and make-up industry must have made a few millions in Nigeria yesterday because of the AMVCA. Everyone looked quite glam in their own estimation!
Everyone? So, it seemed to me, even though I can safely say that the fashion on display was a combination of the outstanding, the outlandish and  the outrageous! Fashion wise, I think the irrepresible Denrele Edun flew over the cuckoo’s nest.  LMAOOOO
I noticed earlier a masked lady walking the red carpet and thought to myself that someone was perhaps doing an artistic Peter Cech of Chelsea on the red carpet. Imagine my surprise when the ‘lady’ walked up to me and called my name in Denrele’s voice! It was Denrele, dressed as a lady, with butt pads and all!
‘Uncle Charles, that’s the idea!’ He laughed as I took a picture with him, telling him in the process that he was crazy! Did I say he was doing a Cech? Change that to Bruce Jenner, maybe! I can safely say though, that Seyi Shay could take appropriate dress lessons from Denrele though, when next she’s performing for the President or top dignitaries!
But I digress.
The show started at 6.30pm CAT with an opening performance by an African dance troupe. An interesting monologue by Osas Ighodaro, dressed somewhat like an African queen, asked the niggling African question ‘What if I am African?’.
I don’t know how the Shakira-styled hip shaking which Osas and a couple of female dancers did while that question was being asked, had to do with being African but I kinda thought those hips onstage lied a bit during the wriggle.
The opening performance was average, in my opinion. It seemed more like the kind of performance for a boring gala night for African Heads of states than for a top profile event like AMVCA. That flat opening skit set the tone for the drone first half of the show. The show dragged a bit and looking at some faces seated in the hall, behind the heavily caked make-up of some people in the hall, one saw a bit of irritation during the first thirty minutes of the show.
IK and Vimbai tried to spike up the show those first few minutes. However, I had the feeling that Vimbai’s sing-song voice wasn’t helping the nerves in the hall. IK and Vimbai tried a couple of banter which the audience received with polite laughter.
IK cracked a joke about make-up and how a white lady he shagged turned out to be Mercy Johnson the next morning! Now, that was…well..politically inappropriate…for lack of a better phrase. That joke was overboard and IK got away with it, perhaps. Anyway, I think IK and Vimbai found their presenting mojo later in the show though.
Nonso Diobi and Linda Ejiofor came onstage to present the first award of the night. Nonso seemed to like the sound of his voice as he went on a bit about how it was a tough category and how every nominee bla bla bla.Next time, keep it straight and simple, please!
Next duo of Presenters were Akin Lewis and Oge Okoye. Oge Okoye got quite some appreciative applause from the audience for her outfit. By the way, I think her character in ‘Hotel Majestic’ is one of my favourite characters in the serial and she interprets that role quite well.
During the commercial breaks in the hall, the audience was a bit restless. Last year, there was a Disc Jockey who spinned some vibes which kept the audience all hyped up by the time the cameras returned to the live event.
I wonder why that was not the case this year? Africa needs to see excited faces all thrilled and happy at the end of such breaks. Little details such as those help the overall tempo of the event. And what was wrong with the cooling system in the hall? The temperature was quite humid in most areas inside the hall and not a few people were fanning themselves.
Tunde Babalola won two awards in the writing categories and gave kudos to both Kunle Afolayan and Mildred Okwo, the Producers of the films which won him both awards in separate categories. Tola Odunsi of ‘Tinsel’ and the dread-locked actor in ‘Hotel Majestic’ presented the ‘Best Editor’ award to Victoria Akujobi, a young lady. She kept giggling shyly in her acceptance speech like a village virgin and her gush got the audience laughing  too. It was heartwarming though to see that a woman won in that category, which is usually male dominated.
One of the disappointments of the event was the performance by the Mavins. It was below par. I do not know how it looked to those who watched it live on television but to us in the hall, it didn’t do jack. They performed their hit song ‘Dorobucci’ and I must say that maybe the audience was ‘Doro-weary’ because the performance lacked excitement.
The artistes kept singing over each other’s lines in an ‘I-too-know’ kind of way. Dija sang ( or rather mimed) for Tiwa Savage who was absent probably for obvious reasons-pregnancy or another engagement? The performance was sluggish and received just some polite applause.
I wonder why they didn’t move the audience much. I can only believe that it must be because their appearance in the awards was massively overhyped and people really didn’t have anything to look forward to. It was a bit too much of MTN to have hyped their performance so much before the awards that when they came up and we all expected a bomb (oops..no apologies to Boko Haram!)all we got was a firecracker!
Funlola Aifoyebi and Ali Nuhu had quite a good banter on stage as they presented the ‘Best Indigenous Language-Hausa’ awards. And when Fathia Balogun won in the Yoruba category, she identified with her roots by revealing that she’s just an Urhobo Babe who speaks Yoruba fluently, even though she had a couple of her Yoruba ‘supporters club’ members with  her onstage.
Obi Emelonye, who won in the Igbo category, commendably spiked the audience with his Igbo acceptance speech, after Mike Ezuronye had gingered the category with his ‘Igbo Kwenu’ greetings.
Comedians, Eddie Kadi and Basketmouth gave good account of themselves in their stand-up segments.
Tuface Idibia also performed. I felt it was an average performance. Maybe it had to do with the din from his live band or his raunchy-looking dancers onstage, which seemed unlike Tuface. I’m wondering if he’s trying hard at this period in his career to show us he too can do the lewd background dancers stuff too? I think he’s too much of a superstar to fall for that.
Ivie Okujaye, another actress who has impressed me in her outing on ‘Hotel Majestic’, presented The Trailblazer Award which was won by CJ Obasi. Obasi climbed up the stage and seemed to snatch the microphone from Ivie! LMAO!
The late Amaka Igwe got a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented by Richard Mofe-Damijo, whose voice broke in pain when he called up Charles Igwe to receive the award on her behalf. The whole hall gave a standing ovation in her honour. Rest in peace, Amaka. It was heartwarming to note that she was remembered and honoured. Before that category, the names of the departed artistes in the past year scrolled across the screen, most poignantly was Muna Obiekwe’s.
OC Ukeje won the ‘Best Actor in a drama’  category, making it the second time he would be winning an AMVCA. He was gracious enough to recognise Peace Anyiam-Osigwe of AMAA who gave him his big break, according to him. His award was presented to him by Genevieve Nnaji , who really looked good in her evening gown. Genevieve though, made a slip when she extolled Amstel Malta. She announced that the winner in that category gets a million naira and six months of Amstel Malta, a brand which she endorses as a brand ambassador.
She ended her speech by cheekily saying ‘Get fat!’. Huh? I thought Amstel Malta projects itself as a low sugar, healthy, low fat beverage? Why would a brand ambassador quip on international television that it has fat, even if it was light-hearted? If I talk now, una go say….anyway. Lef matter.
Kunle Afolayan won the ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Movie’ categories and I think it was well deserved. ‘October 1 is quite a formidable movie. Congrats, Kunle. The show ended with a performance by P Square, which was more for the watching viewers as most of the guests trooped out of the hall.
Having observed a bit of the rehearsals a day before, I must commend the organisers for planning an event which had less mistakes this year. Everyone seemed guarded and one could not really point to any bloopers during the awards. However, in my honest opinion, I think the event lacked the full punch.
Perhaps the show had been over-hyped and one expected more? Or what? Let me put it this way; the show scores full marks for glamour.  I am yet to see a more glamourous entertainment event like the AMVCA. But the excitement for the show itself was damp. My thoughts? Next year, give us a surprise guest appearance or something. I can bet that current raves like Kiss Daniels could have spiked that crowd.
Give us better entertainment value. A movie award show should leave the audience and viewers gasping. This year, people are going to talk more about who wore what ( or is it who wore who as those sneer-inducing Naija red carpet presenters would ask!)than who won which. Perhaps a Bovi could join next year as host or even Eddie Kadi or Basketmouth? Perhaps something not expected could be added to the show? It’s Africa Magic, come on! Where did the magic go?
And something has to be upgraded about the writers who scripted the show? I didn’t feel the jokes, if any. The Presenters mostly improvised unlike last year which had a good script prompt. This year was quite bland. The 2015 AMVCA had the best of glamour and much guts. I just didn’t see the glitter in the event”.

The celebration was to foster the spirit of sportsmanship among people living with disabilities, as they played basketball to commemorate the event.

A small after party was also organized by friends and families later at night to further celebrate Prof. Osinbajo.

We wish him many more years!

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, March 9, that the Nigerian children are imprisoned by poor education, hunger and diseases because the government has refused to enforce laws that protect them.

The party made this known in a series of tweets using the hashtag #WhyWeMarch via its Twitter page, @APCNigeria.

The party noted that the Nigerian health system makes it difficult for children to survive infancy, arguing that there is very little evidence of the Child’s Right Act in the life of the Nigerian child.

The party said: “It is not about the periodic hand-outs, it is about implementing policies that protect and develop. Children who could better the lot of Nigeria are perpetually imprisoned by poor education, hunger and diseases.”

In other tweets, the APC said: “The Nigerian government has refused to enforce laws that protect our children. The Nigerian health system makes it difficult for children to survive infancy.”

“The rights of children are broadly classified into Survival, Protection, Development and Participation. No education. And where it is free, it is useless. Teachers lack quality to impart knowledge.”

“There is very little evidence of the Child’s Right Act in the life of the Nigerian child. There is a National hypocrisy of building a future that ignores Nigerian children.”

“The best time to have acted on this was decades ago. The second best time is NOW- David Brin. #WhyWeMarch
